3 Gameday
Letter from patDear Stockton Ports fans,
As we bring another exciting season of California League competition to a close, I’d like to thank you for your continuing support of the Stockton Ports and reflect with you on all of the terrific things that have been accomplished on and off the field this season.
We opened the season on April 16 with a California League Championship ring ceremony and celebration of the franchise’s record-setting 11th league crown, and we were truly honored by the support and excitement of our fans that night. That support has not wavered once this season, in spite of the adversity that the team faced in the first half of the season. Our fans clearly demonstrated their high level of dedication and commitment this season, showing why they are the best fans of any team in the California League. I am joined by all of our front office, on-field personnel, and game day staff when I say thank you for your support this season.
The atmosphere at any ballpark comes to life with its fans, and you have made Banner Island Ballpark the ideal place to be on any spring or summer night here in Stockton. One only had to look at the 6,075 fans here on July 3 to see that Stocktonians re-ally enjoy the affordable and fun family entertainment we provide here at the ballpark.
The Ports were also very proud to welcome the one millionth fan in Banner Island Ballpark history this summer, in its fifth season. It was a pleasure to welcome Randy Friend of Manteca, Calif. as our one mil-lionth fan in Banner Island Ballpark history.
This accomplishment definitively shows the loyalty of Ports fans and reflects the family-fun atmosphere we produce here at Banner Island Ballpark. We were truly excited to celebrate this accomplishment as we headed into the final stretch of the season. We look forward to welcoming the two millionth fan to the ballpark in the future, and to continue to be a part of the lives of so many San Joaquin County residents.
In addition to the successes on the field, like Jemile Week’s 22-game hitting streak, Ben Hornbeck’s 12 strikeouts in his debut, Matt Spencer’s walk-off home run, and much more, the Ports have made several achievements off the field.
The Alumni Club grew in membership, and the continued growth of the Everyday Eddie’s Kids Club and Medcore HP Silver Sluggers Club are signs that the additional programs put in place by our staff are ef-fective. The Ports Anchor Fund generated about $25,000 so far this season, from the generous support of fans at various events. Every cent of those funds will go to support child-based community outreach programs in Stockton and San Joaquin County. The Ports have also teamed with Jackson Rancheria and Casino to support the Dameron Hospital Sweet Success Diabetes program this year, along with the Go Foundation to support area charitable programs. The Ports also hosted a school supply drive and food drive, doing the organization’s part to give back to the community.
One of the other off-field highlights was that the Ports were the final stop on the Bob Dylan Show Concert tour, welcoming more than 8,400 fans to Banner Island Ballpark for a concert featuring legendary musi-cians Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Bob Dylan. The August 15 concert was the first concert in stadium history. It was a tremendous success, and we look forward to hosting many more special events of that caliber at Banner Island Ballpark in the future.
This has been an exciting and fun-filled season, both on and off the field for the Stockton Ports. It’s been pleasure to serve our fans and to bring them the best of family entertainment here at Banner Island Ball-park this season!
Thanks for coming to the ballpark this year, and I look forward to seeing you back here in 2010!
Go Ports!
Sincerely, Pat FilipponePresident and General Manager

Q&A with NickuelaPorts Q&A with Manager Aaron Nieckula
Manager Aaron Nieckula has placed an emphasis on posi-tive thinking and player de-velopment in his first season at the helm of the Stockton Ports. From starting the year with a 25-45 record in the first half, to playing above .500 in the second half, the Ports have showed that they can remain positive in the face of adversity and are ma-turing as players. The Ports checked in with Nieckula to
get his views about the team and their progress as the season draws to a close.
SP: What has impressed you most about this 2009 team?
AN: The tremendous job that these players have done all season. Although the record may not reflect it, these young men have worked hard and remained positive in the face of adversity and have gotten bet-ter since Day 1.
SP: What to you is the biggest difference between the Ports in the first half and the Ports in the second half?
AN: There has been a change in personnel. We’ve added a few outstanding players from Kane County that have stepped right in and helped turn this club around.
SP: How do you account for the team’s success in the second half? How do you think the team will finish?
AN: As I mentioned in my previous answer, getting players like (Grant) Desme, (Steve) Kleen, (Jason) Ray, (Mickey) Storey, (Ben) Hornbeck, and (Pedro Figueroa) Figgy has certainly helped. But also guys that have been here the entire season have helped contribute to the team’s second half success. This whole minor league baseball season is about player development and I have seen many of these young men get better throughout this season.
SP: Have you met any of the team goals you set in the beginning of the season? If so, which ones?
AN: The most important goal has been met: develop players and help them improve their game. A second goal is TBA: qualify for playoffs.
SP: Right now, the Ports pitching staff is leading the league and A’s farm system in strikeouts, and is also putting up great numbers in other pitching categories. Do you think their success will equate to success for the Oakland organization down the road?
AN: Absolutely. This pitching staff has done a tre-mendous job of throwing strikes and getting outs.
SP: Being the Single A Advanced club, the Ports club is meant to help players hone and develop their skills so they can continue to matriculate up the farm system. Do you think the players this season have learned a majority of the lessons they need to advance up the system? What lessons do you want them to learn before the season’s finished?
AN: The most important lesson to be learned in Minor League Baseball, as far as I am concerned, is the ability to take the season one day at a time and to be able to handle both successes and failures appropri-ately.
SP: You’ve nearly finished your first year managing in the California League. Did the competition in the League meet your expectations? How does it com-pare to managing in the Midwest League?
AN: Managing is managing. This is a quality develop-mental league.
SP: Is there anything else you’d like Ports fans to know about the 2009 club?
AN: Although it has been a relatively difficult year for the team on the field, at least in the first half, the Ports have truly enjoyed playing in front of the faithful and supportive fans. All of us sincerely appreciate the support and want to thank you for standing behind us win or lose.

Season in Review
Gameday 10
A look back at 2009
After securing their 11th California League Cham-pionship last season, the Stockton Ports team looked to defending their crown in 2009. But while their hopes were high, the Ports struggled in the first half of the season.
Stockton finished the first half of the season 25-45 (.357), which is the Ports’ worst half-season record since finishing 23-47 (.329) in the second half of the 1999 season. The last time the Ports finished the first half with a winning percentage less than .400 was in 1961, when they finished 21-48 with a .304 winning percentage.
But Stockton was able to turn things around in the second half, playing over .500 and making a playoff run. The success in the second half could be credited to the addition of prospects from Single-A Kane County, including Steve Kleen, Grant Desme, Dusty Coleman, Anthony Capra and Ben Hornbeck.
The Ports also welcomed the First and Second Round Draft picks from 2008, INF Jemile Weeks and RHP Tyson Ross. Both succeeded in Stock-ton, and earned promotions to Double-A Midland. OF Matt Spencer and INF Alex Valdez were also both promoted to Midland in the first half of the season, finding continued success.
With the regular season coming to a close, we look back at some of the highlights of another great year of competitive California League baseball.
Walk-Off Winner— It came down to a nail-biting finish, and for the second time this season, the Ports walked off the Banner Island Ballpark diamond victorious. With two out and two on in the bottom of the ninth, OF Matt Spencer lifted the Ports to a 8-7 walk-off win against Rancho Cucamonga on Friday, May 8 with a monster shot over the Jackson Rancheria Back Porch. The Ports came back from a 6-2 deficit after five in-nings, and chiseled away at the Quakes’ lead in the late innings before Spencer’s home run buried Rancho Cucamonga, and gave Stockton their sec-ond walk-off win of the season. It was their first walk-off home run victory of the year.
No-Hitting Hernandez—In his seventh start of the season for Stockton, LHP Carlos Hernandez got the better of the Inland Empire 66ers down at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Hernandez, on the heels of two straight losses, was in dire need of a good outing when he took the hill on Wednesday,
May 12 in San Bernardino. Hernandez didn’t just have a good outing--he was brilliant. Hernandez did not allow a hit in his six innings of work, striking out eight and helping the Ports to a 2-0 win. The Ports’ no-hit bid ended in the eighth as reliever Justin Friend allowed a single to Steven Caseres.
Break out the Fan—LHP Ben Hornbeck headed into the game at home on Friday, May 22 as one of the best pitchers in the Oakland organization, with a 4-0 record and a 1.24 ERA in seven games with Kane County. In his debut with the Ports, Hornbeck proved that he could put up some impressive numbers in the California League as well as the Midwest League. He struck out an individual and team season-high 12 batters in 6.0 innings, and held the Visalia Rawhide to just one hit and one walk in the game. He struck out the side in two consecutive innings, and fanned eight of the last nine batters he faced.
No. 1 Pick Delivers—INF Jemile Weeks arrived in Stockton on May 27, and made his presence known immediately. Weeks, the A’s 1st Round (12th overall) selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, started off the season by hitting safely in each of the first 22 straight games he played in. He batted .400 (36x90) with five doubles, a triple, seven home runs and 23 RBI in that span. He posted six multi-RBI games in the streak as well. Weeks holds the longest hitting streak by a Ports player this season. He was also only one of two California Leaguers with a 20+ game hitting streak. James McOwen of High Desert compiled a 45-game hitting streak, from May 10 to July 8.
Good Luck Breaking This Record—The Stockton Ports played in the longest game in California League history—a 7-hour, 34-minute long con-test, and lost to the High Desert Mavericks, 7-6 in 21 innings. The game originally began at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, June 4 and wrapped up on Friday, June 5. The game was the longest the Ports have played all season, in terms of both innings and duration. It was their fourth extra-innings game this sea-son. The game had to be called just after five hours and 14 innings of play Thursday night be-cause of a California League rule that stipulates that no inning can be started after midnight. Play resumed at 6:05 p.m. on Friday, prior to their regularly scheduled game. The previous League record for longest game (in terms of duration) was seven hours, for a 22-inning game
11 Gameday
between Bakersfield and Visalia, which was on June 19 and 20, 1971. Visalia won, 11-9, at home in that game. That game was also sus-pended by umpires due to a curfew rule.
Celebrating Independence—The Ports hosted their annual Independence Day Celebration on July 3, welcoming 6,075 fans to Banner Island Ballpark. The Ports hosted a Fireworks Ex-travaganza that lit up the Downtown Stockton skyline following an exciting 6-2 victory against archrival San Jose on Friday, July 3. The Ports nearly matched their single game attendance record of 6,285, which was set on July 3, 2008. The Ports had some in-game fireworks as Grant Desme and Frank Martinez homered in this year’s July 3 game. LHP Ben Hornbeck allowed just two hits—both singles—and two runs in 5.0 innings. He struck out six in the contest as well.
Break out the Brooms—Who doesn’t love hand-ing a rival their upcomence? The Stockton Ports were locked in a pitcher’s duel with the San Jose Giants on Thursday, July 30, and tough pitching enabled the Ports to edge the Giants, 4-3 at Banner Island Ballpark. The vic-tory sealed the sweep for the Ports, giving the Giants their first losing sweep of the season. The Giants had not been swept since dropping a three-game set at Lancaster from July 16-18, 2008. It was the second sweep of the year for the Ports. Stockton starter Carlos Hernandez had another great outing, allowing one run on four hits in 6.2 innings of work. Reliever Justin Friend picked up his fifth save of the season, knuckling down on the Giants in the ninth frame.
Welcoming 1 Millionth Fan on July 30-- Randy Friend, a native of Manteca, Calif., admitted that he’s never won anything—at least before becoming the one millionth fan to enter the gates of Banner Island Ballpark. But Friend certainly walked away from the gates with more than a Section 112 ticket to the Thurs-day, July 30 Ports game against the San Jose Giants. The Ports put together a gift basket for the one millionth fan, including two tickets to Las Vegas, courtesy of Allegiant Air, an au-tographed 2009 Ports team baseball, CDs from Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson, and much more.
“This accomplishment definitively shows the loyalty of Ports fans and reflects the family-fun atmosphere we produce here at Banner Island Ballpark,” said Ports President and General Manager Pat Filippone. “We’re truly excited to celebrate this accomplishment as we head into
the final stretch of the season.”
Close to Perfect—July 31 belonged to Ports starter Daniel Haigwood. In his second start since be-ing added to the Stockton roster from Double-A Midland, the southpaw retired the first 19 batters he faced, taking him one out into the seventh. Haigwood’s bid for perfection was broken up by a solo home run by Modesto Nuts shortstop Hector Gomez, a hit that proved to be the only blemish on the night for both Haigwood and Derrick Gordon, who tossed a perfect final two innings to end the ballgame. Stockton’s offense came through with plenty of support as the Boys of Banner Island earned their fourth straight win, beating the Nuts by a final of 7-1 on Friday, July 31.
Piling on the Ks—The Stockton pitchers put forth a tremendous effort, striking out 22 Lake Elsinore batters as the Ports came from behind to win, 6-5 in 10 innings on August 4 at Banner Island Ball-park. The 22 strikeouts marked a new season-high for the Ports, and Stockton pitchers came within two strikeouts of matching a California League record (22) for most strikeouts in a nine-inning game. Starter Anthony Capra fanned nine in 4.2 innings, while Derrick Gordon struck out six, Nick Walters added four strikeouts, and winning pitcher Mickey Storey collected four strikeouts in the contest. The Ports totaled 14 hits in the game, and Wichita State product Dusty Coleman secured the victory for Stockton with the game-winning RBI single in the tenth inning.

Ports and The Community
The Stockton Ports are dedicated to supporting the community that supports them. It is the organi-zation’s goal to be a responsible, proactive force in the community, championing causes and helping its fan base.
The Ports are proud to be in-volved in and provide numerous community programs in Stockton and San Joaquin County. In 2009, the Ports worked hard to help their community by hosting several exciting events to benefit the Anchor Fund, creating a new Ticket Donation Program, and developing their reading program and fan clubs.
The Stockton Ports community fund, the Anchor Fund, is the first of its kind in the 68-year history of the organization. The Fund was established in 2007 and monies raised by the Anchor Fund will benefit children-based charitable endeavors in San Joaquin County. In 2009, the Ports generated ap-proximately $25,000 for the Anchor Fund through various events.
In February, the Ports hosted their 2nd Annual Hot Stove Banquet. Oakland A’s manager Bob Geren was the guest speaker, and chatted with fans about the outlook for the 2009 A’s as well as the success of the Ports in the A’s farm system. In June, the Ports hosted their 2nd Annual Fish with a Port Tour-nament. Fans went fishing with a Ports player or coach and a BASS Pro on the Delta Waterways. In July, fans enjoyed Root Beer Float Night at a game, and had the opportunity to participate in the Man-ager’s Luncheon at Arroyo’s Café. From August 7-9, the Ports hosted a Community Fund Weekend, giving fans the chance to purchase autographed memorabilia, baseballs, and even enjoy a silent auction for Lunch with a Ports player.
The Anchor Fund efforts in 2009 look to surpass the figures posted in 2008. In 2008, the Ports donated approximately $16,000 and nearly $43,500 of in-kind donations, including 8,600 tickets to local non-profit organizations, charities and schools through the Anchor Fund.
In addition to these Anchor Fund events, the Ports also partnered with News10 for a School Supply Drive and a Food Drive. The Ports are proud to support their community through these events.
The Stockton Ports were proud to introduce the Ticket Donation Program, new for the 2009 sea-
son. For the first time in 2009, Ports season ticket holders and all fans have the opportunity to con-tribute to the Anchor Fund, simply by donating their unused Ports tickets. The Ports organization will match all ticket donations made by season ticket holders and fans.
Tickets donated to this program will in turn be do-nated to foster agency related non-profit organiza-tions in the San Joaquin Valley, allowing underprivi-leged youth, that would not otherwise be able, to attend Ports games. Before the end of the season, more than 750 total tickets were donated through the program!
The Ports Baseball by the Books program saw an increase in participation in 2009, as 32 schools and nearly 28,000 students in San Joaquin County joined the program for the 2009 school year. Base-ball by the Books is designed to spread the value of reading by encouraging students in grades kinder-garten through eighth to read on their own while earning two free tickets to a designated Stockton Ports baseball game.
The Ports also saw increases in membership for their Everyday Eddie’s Kids Club, presented by Sub-way, and the Medcore HP Silver Sluggers Club.
The Ports are dedicated to building on their success from the 2009 season, and further developing their relationship with the Stockton and San Joaquin County communities in 2010.

Gameday 24
Welcome back, true fans of perfection and awesomitude to the final installment of 2009 perfection! We truly feel it is unfortunate that the Ports 2009 season and celebration of 2008 greatness reaches its culmination. However, as fundamentally amazing members of this fine country and society, The Kyle’s look at the positive—the 2009 offseason is about to begin!
We have been fielding fan mail and an abundance of inquiries wondering what Greatness will be doing in the offseason. Well, our lovable San Joaquinians, inquire no more! Today we will celebrate the dark/morbid/sadness that is known as the offseason… no Ports baseball. However, closing the books on 2009 Ports baseball funnels The Kyle’s into the opening of the book of life! So without further ado…
The Top 5 Offseason Klye’s Endeavors and Contributions to the World…..BOOM GO!
Kyle Osgood’s Top 5
DVR’n it – You may ask, “Kyle, what is this?” Well, it’s the new sport 1. I invented. Here is how you play. The game is separated into two half’s (Afternoon and Evening). The first half tends to consist of comedies and sporting related shows, while the second half is mostly dramas. In the middle there is a 30 minute halftime, which consists of ordering pizza, because as we know, “You got thirty minutes!”Work on my “athletic skills” – I was not blessed with what “main-2. stream society” would consider a body made for sports, but my love for the game(s) is there. Call me Rudy if you must!...No, seriously, please call me Rudy—I love that movie!Watch the Championship runs – During the offseason, I expect 3. championships from all of my favorite teams – Atlanta Braves (Wild Card to Champion), Kansas City Chiefs (Yeah, Raiders, you wanna fight about it?!), Nebraska Cornhuskers (Because we know the Big 12 will be dominating the realm of college football) and Wichita State Basketball (The miracle run begins in November). All other offseason sports teams pale in comparison.Enjoy my nights – Contrary to popular belief, my best nights were not 4. spent in the box office. I expect to frolic in the rain with a wonder-fully smelling DeWitt and play Ping-Pong on our soon-to-be-acquired Ping-Pong table (Ethan, it’s happening!)Serve the people – Our fans are the lifeblood of our universe. My 5. offseason will consist of shaking hands and kissing babies. What-ever I have to do to increase the fan base, I will do it. Need your car washed…Done! Need a back massage…Done! Need someone to clean up after your pet….DeWitt is all yours!
25 Gameday
Kyle DeWitt’s Top 5
Sleep – I have a scheduled make-out session with my pillow and sheets (it’s 1. not as strange as it sounds). I know what you may be thinking, “Hey Kyle’s, don’t you do nothing while the team is on the road anyway?” Short and simple response: Yes, we leave the ballpark to rot and turn into an uniden-tifiable wasteland until the team graces us with their presence from a road trip. No! We keep this ship sailing year round bucko (maybe you heard about a little thing called the Bob Dylan concert?)! The glamour of working in base-ball is a fraud! Fifteen hour days get somewhat redundant and greatness and hotitude runs a little thin following an eight-game homestand, despite our deep, gold-plated and flex-fitted reserve tanks. So, I will sleep immediately following season’s end… Deborah, hold all my calls til October!Do Fun Stuff – I got some tennis to play with Watts, Madden with Bagen, 2. FIFA with the Attack, Golden Tee with Osgood, Rock-em Sock-em Robots with Sharkey, fetch & tug-o-war with my dogs, Bed, Bath and Beyond and Home Depot with the lady if I have enough time, and so on. Also, the Ports front office softball team will bring the pain and make it rain on softball fields Stockton-wide! So stay up on the Ports Post blog to maintain awesomeness-awareness! I’m gonna go yard on some poor and unsuspecting Stocktonian… just a heads-up. Get In Shape – A moment of humble honesty: The Kyle’s are getting soft. 3. However, don’t let that admission fool you…we are still the most perfect and awesome duo to come at you since Peanut and Butter! Mmmm, peanut but-ter… this getting in shape thing may be an uphill battle. Don’t judge and drop support—we are committed to a common goal!FOOTBALL!!! – Yeah, duders it is time for some football! I will be avidly fol-4. lowing and monitoring the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl season as well as my Ports fantasy football championship run. If you have a problem with my stone-cold-lock predictions you can go cry about it. Just keep in mind there is no room for babies in football. Charity – I will be donating my salary to the development of greener fuel 5. emissions testing, my time to freeing Tibet, my love to feeding the dwindling gazelle populations in Sudan, my thoughts to cleansing the world of disease, and my soul to extending life expectancy—all without stepping on the toes of world leaders, such as President Obama and Brett Favre (did you really think you could escape him at a Ports game!? Hahahaha you should know better!!!!)
If you are worried about the discontinuation of The Kyle’s, don’t worry, we al-ready inked our deal for 2010. Next year we are planning on branching out to hardcover, but our publisher “Big Deal Industries” doesn’t know if the world can handle this much hotitude in hardback form.
Make sure to keep up with the blog and Ports softball team in the offseason!
Until next year, stay hot Stocktonians!
We write for the people!
Cheers!
