Stephen Donte’ Barksdale might be one of the shortest players on the field at 5-8 when it comes game time. However, Barksdale carries a big share of

the load for the Tiger offense. Not only does Barksdale play wide receiver

but he is also a peacemaker, a deliveryman and a mediator.During the Tigers’ opener against East Cen-

tral, Barksdale not only hauled in four catch-es for 82 yards including a 65-yard scor-ing strike, but the Southaven High School graduate also played peacemaker, serving as a go-between for the Tiger coaching staff and the referees, ran plays from the sidelines into the huddle and also stepped between an offensive and defensive lineman to keep a scuffle from breaking out.Barksdale might be short in stature but in

the eyes of his teammates, he’s one of the tallest on the team when it comes to his char-acter.Barksdale’s height might be a deterrent to

some but the Holly Springs native has used that as one of the motivating factors that makes him work even harder.“Coming out of high school my height was

a motivating factor to prove that I could play at the next level,” Barksdale said. “Now ev-erything is up to me if I want to go to the next level beyond junior college.”While every college player dreams of go-

ing to the next level, Barksdale has put up numbers that should garner some attention. In nine games during his freshman year,

Barksdale became the Tigers second-leading receiver hauling in 26 passes for 317 yards and a pair of touchdowns.Only Arkansas State University signee Josh

Jarboe had more yards than Barksdale dur-ing the 2010 season. However, Barksdale is going to enjoy his

time at Northeast and is in no hurry to move on.

As the sophomore said, “I really like it here at Northeast. They take good care of me around here!”Barksdale knows that to move on to a se-

nior college, he must not only take care of business on the field but in the classroom as well. That’s why that he has set his schedule up

so he takes care of all his classroom work before he concentrates on football.“When I get out of class, I try to go to the li-

brary and do as much work as I can because I know I am going to be busy doing football duties,” Barksdale said. “So, I try to finish all my homework before I go to class or at least that night so I can stay ahead.”Finishing what he started is something

Barksdale has always done whether it was on the gridiron or running track in high school where he set a personal best in the 400-meter dash at the Chickasaw Confer-ence Championships with a 50.38.While one may think that these two coin-

cide with each other, Barksdale has noticed that there is a difference between the two sports but one helps the other.“(Track) teaches you how to run,” Barks-

dale said. “On the field and off the field, it’s

a different speed but it made me faster run-ning track.”Barksdale knows that all the preparation

that goes into a game starts early on but it was not always that way. Barksdale did not get the football bug until

he started his first varsity contest during his sophomore season in high school.During that time, Barksdale has grown a

new sense of work ethic and offers, “Go hard as you can at every point in time.”Barksdale goes hard at everything he does

– whether it’s a wide receiver, peacemaker, deliveryman or mediator.(Northeast Public Information Department

intern Jessie Perriman contributed to this report.)

Series: Southwest 14-11-1.

Notes: As the series record indicates, Northeast and Southwest’s 26-game se-ries has been a close one. Both teams are separated by less than two points in the all-time series average with Southwest turning in 17.5 points a game to North-east’s 15.9 points a game with only the 1984 score missing from record. Only four times has the point differential been more than 20 points and three of those come in 1988-90. In the last three meet-ings between the two teams, 13 points have decided the games.
