Head coach Jerome Souers is entering his 16th season at the helm of the Northern Arizona football program. Souers, the longest tenured football coach in the history of the program, ranks third all-time in Big Sky history with 84 career victories. Souers and his team posted an 8-3 overall record in 2012, the best performance since the 2003 season. The record includes tying a school re-cord eight consecutive wins which was sparked by a 17-14 win at UNLV. In-cluded in the win streak was a 28-24 defeat over No. 14 Montana. 4,000 Club for the Elite• Running back Zach Bauman is the first and only NAU player to cross the 4,000 career rushing yards benchmark. Bauman rushed for 118 yards against Montana on Sept. 28 to join the 4,000 club.

Franchise Bauman• Senior running back Zach Bauman posted a 151-yard rushing performance in the Jacks’ home opener on Sept. 21 for his first 100-plus yard game of the season.• He backed it up with 118 yards and two touchdowns in the win over No. 7 Montana on Sept. 28. During the win over the Griz-zlies, Bauman became the first NAU player to eclipse the 4,000 career rushing yards mark.• Bauman entered NAU’s game versus UC Davis 48 yards shy of breaking the NAU career rushing record. He inched closer and closer as the game went on and with 19 seconds remaining on the clock in the second quarter, the Chandler, Ariz. native rushed for exactly four yards to break the record and end the half. The yardage also moved Bauman into ninth all-time on the Big Sky career rushing yards chart.• Bauman already owns the record for career carries (815) and is climbing up the career all-purpose yards chart with 5,071 for the third-most in school history.• Bauman is ranked third among active players in the FCS in ca-reer all-purpose yards and third in career rushing yards and fifth in career rushing yards per game.• Bauman is also ranked 8th all-time amongst Big Sky career rushing leaders.

Sellout Crowd At Win Over MontanaNo. 22/24 Northern Arizona trounced No. 7 Montana on Sept. 28 in front of a sellout crowd of 12,640 screaming Lumberjack fans in its Big Sky opener. It was the first sellout at the Walkup Skydome since 1995.

Great Defense By Chima Ike • Hot off a historical win over No. 7 Montana, Northern Arizona defensive tackle Chima Ike was named the College Sports Mad-ness Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 29. The honor marked the third week in a row that a Lumberjack has earned the honor.• Ike was instrumental to the Lumberjacks’ defense as he reg-istered five tackles and a pair of sacks for a loss of 12 yards. He was also credited with a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries.• NAU’s defense was able to limit Montana’s offense to 16 points as it beat the Grizzlies at home for the first time since 1997.

Can’t Stop the Defense• Senior linebacker Ryan Reardon was named the College Foot-ball Performance Awards (CFPA) National Defensive Performer of the Week and National Linebacker of the Week on Sept. 29.• Reardon recorded his first career touchdown when he returned a fumble for 98 yards in Northern Arizona’s 34-16 win over No. 7 Montana. Reardon recovered a fumble at NAU’s two-yard line and ran it back for the score. He also registered four tackles, in-cluding one for a loss of 16 yards, plus a pass breakup.

Numbers Don’t Lie• Northern Arizona went 3-0 in the month of September.• The Lumberjacks are 3-0 when scoring first.• NAU is 3-0 when holding opponents to 20 points or less.

Big Sky OpenersThe Lumberjacks have won their last four Big Sky openers. Idaho State (W, 32-7, 2010; W, 20-3, 2011) and Montana (W, 41-31, 2012; W, 34-16, 2013). NAU is now 27-16 in Big Sky openers.

Battle Wins the Battle• Senior cornerback Anders Battle was named the Big Sky Defen-sive Player of the Week, announced Sept. 23 by the conference office. It’s the second Big Sky honor of the season for an NAU player (both have been defensive honors).• Battle recorded the first points of the game for Northern Arizona when he intercepted a pass by South Dakota’s Josh Vander Mat-en late in the first quarter and returned it for a 49-yard touchdown. Battle also registered a trio of tackles and was credited with three pass break-ups. He was instrumental in helping the Lumberjacks hold South Dakota to zero first downs in the first half, en route to a 22-16 win in NAU’s final non-conference game of the season.

Lucky Number 20• Senior safety Lucky Dozier was named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week, announced Sept. 16 by the conference office. It was the first Big Sky honor of the season for an NAU player.• Dozier, a Sacramento, Calif. native, scored the game-winning touchdown for the Lumberjacks when he picked off UC Davis’ Jimmy Laughrea with 9:05 to go in the game and returned it for a touchdown. At the time the Lumberjacks trailed the Aggies by three points. The score gave NAU its first points of the game since six minutes to go in the first quarter, as the Lumberjacks went on to defeat UC Davis 21-10 en route to their first victory of the sea-son. Dozier’s 78-yard interception return is the longest so far this season in the Big Sky. He also recorded four tackles.

Quarterback Line• Sophomore quarterback Kyren Poe earned his first start at Ar-izona on Aug. 30. The Chandler native connected on his first 10 passes before finishing 21 for 36 with three interceptions. Two of the interceptions were deflected as Poe finished with 176 total passing yards.• To date Poe has completed 75-of-124 passes with two touch-downs. He has had five miscues.

Wild Man• Andy Wilder, the nation’s leading punter a year ago started 2013 off pretty well. The senior had six punts for a total of 260 yards and an average of 43.3 in his first game.• Wilder so far this season has a total of 24 punts for a total of 1,068 yards and an average of 44.5.• Wilder was named the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS National Punter of the Week on Sept. 23. He drilled six punts for a total of 305 yards and an average of 50.8 yards per punt against South Dakota. Wilder’s longest punt of the game was his first which sailed for 66 yards. Out of Wilder’s six punts, three went for 50 yards or longer.• Wilder returns to the field for his senior season. Although the Wild Man isn’t one to brag...he should. Wilder led the nation in yards per punt with a 46.3 average. He had a total of 25 punts go for 50 yards or longer. Wilder’s longest punt of the season went for 71 yards versus Southern Utah. In addition to his phenomenal punting ability, Wilder is also a pretty good field goal kicker. Last season Wilder made 38-of-39 PATs for a total of 68 points.

Pick-Six...Well I don’t mind if I do• Anders Battle joined the pick-six party with a 49-yard return of his own in the 22-16 win over South Dakota.• Thanks to a pair of pick-sixes by Lucky Dozier and Marcus Alford at UC Davis, the Lumberjacks were able to stage a comeback vic-tory and defeat the Aggies 21-10 for NAU’s first win of the season on Sept. 14.

Fourth-Down, Sure We’ll Go For it• NAU is 6-for-8 on fourth down conversions during its season,

while its opponents are 0-5. NAU is tied for first in the nation in opponent fourth down percentage.

D-E-F-E-N-S-E• NAU held South Dakota to zero first downs in the first half of its game versus the Coyotes on Sept. 21.

In the Big Sky• Northern Arizona ranks 11th in scoring offense, second in scor-ing defense, first in total defense and third in punting.

Souers’ Among Big Sky’s Best...Head Coach Jerome Souers has sole possession of second place on the Big Sky’s all-time victories list with 87 wins. Only former coach Chris Ault (Nevada) has won more games in conference history. Souers became the all-time winningest coach in school history in 2008, surpassing Max Spilsbury's 58 wins from 1956-64. He has the longest tenure of any football coach in school his-tory and joins Nevada’s Chris Ault and Idaho State’s Mike Kramer as the only coaches in Big Sky history to serve 14 seasons or more as a head coach in the league.

New Faces to the Staff• Tim Plough enters his first season with NAU after a 10-year playing and coaching career at UC Davis. Plough was the start-ing quarterback for the Aggies under current offensive coordinator coach Rich Scangarello.• Graduate assistants for the 2013 season will be Kyle Jacobo on offense and Grant O’Brien on defense.

Watch Me NowNorthern Arizona has four players on its roster that have been named to various national watch lists. Three of the four players are seniors - Zach Bauman, Andy Wilder and Tim Wilkinson. R.J. Rickert is the lone junior of the group.

turns this fall after suffering a season-ending knee injury last year. Poe was solid in the spring game as it carried over to fall camp where he was able to solidify his spot as the starter.• Before going down with an injury in 2012, Cartwright completed 37-of-79 passes, including three touchdowns and two intercep-tions. He led NAU to a 17-14 win over UNLV for the first FBS win for the Lumberjacks in 25 years.

I Wouldn’t Throw That If I Were YouWhen it comes to the Northern Arizona secondary unit there’s one thing that is for certain, they want to be the best in the Big Sky Conference. With a lineup that includes some of the best players in the Football Championship Subdivision – Lucky Dozier and Anders Battle – the Lumberjacks seem to have all the tools in place to have another successful season.• Dozier, an All-American preseason pick, will lead the unit after having a spectacular first season with the Lumberjacks starting all 11 games. He ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 57 and tied for the Big Sky lead with four interceptions.• Battle led NAU in 2012 with 64 tackles. The preseason All-Amer-ican selection started all 11 games last season and was credited with six pass breakups and a 26-yard interception return. The se-nior also registered a career-high 14 tackles versus UC Davis to tie for fifth all-time in the NAU record books.

Defense Wins Games• The NAU defense registered 29 sacks in 2012, including a mas-sive seven sacks in the 14-point win over UC Davis on Homecom-ing.• The Lumberjack defense finished second in the league in scoring defense at 23.6 points per game. NAU also finished ranked fifth in the league and 27th in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in sacks.• NAU lost Jarret Bilbrey, who led the Lumberjacks in sacks in 2012 with seven for a loss of 41 yards, but it returns CFPA Defensive Lineman Watch List honoree Tim Wilkinson. The all-conference lineman from Las Vegas, Nev. tallied 6.5 sacks for a loss of 26 yards in 2012.

Let’s Jump Start This OffenseNAU finished last season tied for sixth in the league in scoring offense with 31.6 points per game, fourth in rushing offense with 173.5 yards per game and seventh in total offense with 406.9 yards per game. NAU finished 2012 ranked 36th in total offense in the FCS.

Classroom SuccessThirty-eight Lumberjack football players were named 2012-13 Golden Eagle Scholar-Athletes. This distinction is given to NAU student-athletes who have made significant contributions to the Lumberjack athletics program while maintaining a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average. NAU had a total of 12 players graduate in the spring of 2013.

Football Dropped by No. 3 Montana State

BOZEMAN, Mont. - Third-ranked Montana State entered the game with the Big Sky’s top defense but the Bob-cat offense led the way to a 41-24 vic-tory on Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.

“We got pushed out of our game,” said Head Coach Jerome Souers. “Mon-tana State did a great job. Offensively and defensively we need to be more of who we are naturally. Today they put us out of that position.”

Montana State totaled 524 yards in offense led by the 247 passing yards of quarterback DeNarius McGhee, who finished the game 18-for-22 with three touchdowns.

“He made some key throws when we pressured him early,” said Souers.

Montana State took control of the game with three scores in the first 16 minutes of the contest and did not punt in the game, building a 28-10 lead at the half. The Bobcats opened the second half with an 80-yard drive to extend the lead to 34-10.

The Lumberjacks stayed in the game via the big play in the second half.

Sophomore Anders Battle cut the deficit with 60-yard interception for a touch-down in the third quarter against McGhee in the third quarter. The Bobcats marched back down the field but were stopped on a fake field goal, keeping the Lumberjacks alive. Three plays later, quarterback Cary Grossart hit Khalil Paden in back of the MSU secondary for a catch and run for 79 yards.

“Our kids have not given up,” said Souers. “It is frustrating. We have had a lot of mistakes made by inexperienced players. The turnovers were not an issue today. We did not do a good enough job getting off blocks and they bottled up our run game.”

Grossart, who was 6-for-14 in the first half, finished 10-for-20 for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Paden had a career-high 150 yards on five catches. The Bob-cats held the NAU rushing game in check with Zach Bauman and Giovannie Dixon combining for just 57 yards.

The Lumberjacks opened the game with a strong drive, marching down the field to put the first points on the board. Grossart hit Dejzon Walker on a 31-yard pass on the right sideline that just eluded a MSU defender and allowed Walker to scamper into the end zone for his second touchdown of the season.

MSU answered right back three plays later on a 46-yard pass from McGhee to Tanner Bleskin. The Bobcats scored again on their second possession, taking advantage of a pass interference call on third down that setup the 11-yard pass from McGhee to Elvis Akpla.
