SERIES VS. KANSAS STATESaturday’s contest will mark the fifth meeting between Kansas and Kansas State with the series starting in 2017. KU leads the match ups 3-1-0 all-time and the Jayhawks have won the last three battles with the Wildcats. KU leads the series 2-0-0 in meetings in Manhattan, Kansas, including a 1-0 win on Oct. 2, 2020.

All three matches in the series have been shutouts. Kansas State won the first series meeting, 1-0, in Lawrence, while KU won 2-0 in 2018 in Manhattan, 3-0 in 2019 in Lawrence and 1-0 in Manhattan last fall.

LOOKING BACK ON A CRAZY SEASON DUE TO COVIDKansas ended the fall ranked No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. After entering the season receiving votes by the coaches, KU’s opening-match victory at Texas propelled the Jayhawks into the top 10 of the poll at No. 9 on Sept. 22. Winning its first three matches in 2020 saw KU climb to No. 5 in the poll on Oct. 6, its highest ranking in program history. The Jayhawks were ranked in nine of 10 weeks of the fall, with five of those in the top 10. Additionally, since the start of the 2019 season, Kansas has been ranked or receiving votes in each of the last 22 polls.

KANSAS FALL QUICK KICKS• Kansas displayed balance in the fall of 2020 as its 10 goals scored were by six different players – Ceri Holland (3), Rylan Childers (2), Brie Severns (2), and one each by Italia Bradley, Kathryn Castro and Mandi Duggan.• Kansas was one of four Big 12 teams ranked by the coaches at the conclusion of the fall season, along with No. 3 TCU, No. 4 West Virginia and No. 11 Oklahoma State.

IN THE 2020 BIG 12Kansas finished fourth in the 2020 Big 12 standings with 16 points. TCU won the league with 25 points, while West Virginia was second with 21 points. Oklahoma State placed third with 19 points.

Statistically, KU ranked in the upper half of the Big 12 in shutouts (third at 0.57), goals allowed (fourth at 0.86) and goals against average (fifth at 0.86).

Individually, junior goalkeeper Sarah Peters finished tied for third in the league in shutouts (4), third in shouts per game (0.57), third in save percentage (.813) and seventh in saves per game (3.71).

BIG 12 2020 POSTSEASON HONORSSenior Ceri Holland was named to the 2020 All-Big 12 Second Team, while Moira Kelley garnered a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. Selections for the All-Big 12 teams were voted on by the league’s head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players. The announcement means Kansas has had at least one Jayhawk on the All-Big 12 teams each year since the current format began in 2000. The two Jayhawks selected also marked the eighth time in the last nine seasons that two or more KU representatives were selected to the all-conference squads.

A three-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week in the fall of 2020, Holland was on the All-Big 12 Second Team for the second-straight year. The West Yorkshire, England, native posted three goals and three assists in KU’s nine games during this pandemic-shortened season.

Kelley started all nine KU matches on the defensive end in 2020. Additionally, the Overland Park, Kansas, native played every minute for the Jayhawks, including the double-overtime match versus Iowa State on Nov. 6. With Kelley on the field this season, Kansas ranked third in the Big 12 with four shutouts and fourth in the conference in goals allowed with six.

Kansas placed 13 student-athletes on the 2020 Academic All-Big 12 Soccer Team. Twelve Jayhawks were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, including four players – Kathryn Castro, Avery Hall, Ceri Holland and Kailey Lane – who earned a first-team nod for the third time. The announcement marked the 12th time in the last 13 seasons that KU has had eight or more selected to the conference’s all-academic teams.

LATE MATCH MAGICThe Jayhawks have been a clutch bunch over the last few seasons. Six of KU’s 10 goals of the 2020 campaign came at the 60-minute mark or later. Dating back to the start of last season, Kansas has now netted 16 goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation or overtime, seven of which were game-winners. Three of those came in 2020 with senior Ceri Holland’s goal at Texas (9/11) in the 81st minute, senior Kathryn Castro’s goal versus Texas Tech (9/25) in the 80th minute and senior Mandi Duggan’s game winner at Kansas State (10/2) in the 60th minute. The other late goal was by junior Rylan Childers, who scored in the 75th minute at West Virginia (10/30).

2020 UNITED SOCCER COACHES POLLMARCH 2, 2021

EXPERIENCE VS. YOUTHThe 2020 edition of the Jayhawks were a youthful bunch, with 17 of the 28-woman roster boasting only one season of collegiate experience or less. There were eight true freshmen on the 2020 roster. Entering 2020, the squad featured eight players who had seen action in 39 matches or more during their collegiate careers.

Individually, six current Jayhawks averaged 75-plus minutes per match in the fall with four being upperclassmen and two freshmen; those include juniors Rylan Childers, Grace Wiltgen, Kaela Hansen and Sarah Peters and freshmen Moira Kelley and Kate Dreyer.

HOME SWEET HOMERock Chalk Park has been a welcome site for the Jayhawks in recent years as KU has enjoyed a successful four-year stint playing on its home turf. KU finished 3-1-1 at Rock Chalk Park in the fall of 2020. The Jayhawks went 8-2-1 in Lawrence in 2019 and are 40-17-4 (.667) in matches played at home during the regular season since the 2014 campaign. From 2013-14, Kansas posted an 11-match home winning streak, the longest in program history. Since moving into Rock Chalk Park, Kansas has built a goal differential of +46, which includes 23 shutouts. In addition, KU has recorded three home shutouts in its last six contests at Rock Chalk Park.

SAVE IT SARAH!Junior goalkeeper Sarah Peters had a solid third fall in Lawrence coming off a stellar first two seasons as a collegiate goalkeeper. The Lee’s Summit, Missouri, native has started between the posts in all 55 of the Jayhawks’ matches and has put her on pace to make a serious impact on the KU record books.

Peters has amassed a career goals-against average of 0.88, which currently has her as the all-time leader among Jayhawk keepers. She has conceded 50 opponent goals in 5,105 minutes in goal.

Peters has also tallied 24 career shutouts, which puts her four behind the program record of 28, held by Meghan Miller. The win over Texas (9/11) also made her just the fourth KU keeper to tally 30 career wins. With KU’s win against Oklahoma (11/15), Peters moved into third on the Kansas charts with 34 all-time victories. She is 26 away from Miller, who holds the school’s goalkeeper wins record with 60.

PETERS HONORED FOR HER ACADEMICSOn March 2, KU junior Sarah Peters was one of 18 Jayhawk recipients of the Dr. Gerald Lage Award, the highest academic honor awarded by the Big 12 Conference. KU led all league schools with its 18 honorees.

In order to be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. The honoree, which can only be recognized

once, should have 100 hours of earned credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 at the time of the nomination.

The award is in memory of Lage, who served as the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007. He was the chairman on three occasions (1985-86, 93-94 and 2003-04).

FIRST TO SCORE, WINS GALOREDating back to the beginning of the 2012 season, now at 175 games, Kansas has developed an interesting trend when it comes to which team tallies the first goal of the match. During that 175-game span, the Jayhawks were on the losing end only four times in contests which they put in the match’s first goal. Kansas has amassed a record of 84-4-10 in those games (90.8 winning percentage), which included 14 of KU’s wins and one draw in 2019, as well as its four of its five victories in 2020.

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS SPRINGThe NCAA has allowed a soccer championship to be played in the spring of 2021. The championship selections will be announced April 18 and the bracket has been reduced from 64 to 48 teams. There will be 31 automatic qualifiers, with TCU earning the Big 12’s automatic bid based on the 2020 fall season, and 17 at-large selections. The Women’s College Cup will be May 13-17. Kansas began its spring season with a 5-0 exhibition win against Missouri Southern State on Feb. 26.

Kansas’ spring 2021 schedule features seven Power 5 matches as the Jayhawks will vie for an at-large bid to the NCAA Women’s College Cup. KU will face Kansas State and Missouri twice, Iowa State, Notre Dame and Arkansas.

HOLLAND AFTER KUFormer Kansas soccer standout Ceri Holland joined the Wales National Soccer team’s February training camp. The team’s camp was in preparation for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign which will begin in Sept. 2021. In late January, Holland signed to play professional for Liverpool FC Women.

Holland finished her KU career in fall 2020. The West Yorkshire, England, native is one of 14 players in Kansas soccer history to start every match in her career, which was 75 total. While at KU, Holland was a two-time All-Big 12 Second Team selection her junior and senior campaigns. She was also a member of the Big 12 All-Freshman Team in 2017. As a junior, Holland was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team and was a member of the 2019 Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team. She was also was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree and seven-time member of the Athletic Director’s and Big 12 Commissioner’s honor rolls. She graduated from KU in December 2020, in 3.5 years, with a degree in exercise science.

During her senior campaign in 2020, Holland was a three-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week in the pandemic-shortened season. She tied for the Big 12 lead with three goals and three assists in KU’s nine games. Her three goals scored ranked seventh in the league. Additionally, Holland scored two game-winning goals in 2020 which ranked tied for fifth in the conference. Her game winners in 2020 came in the season opener at Texas on Sept. 11 and versus Oklahoma State on Oct. 16.

For her career, Holland finished 10th on the KU all-time shots list with 157. Her 75-consecutive starts as a Jayhawk are fourth all-time and she also amassed 14 assists and five-game winning goals while wearing the Crimson and Blue.

KANSAS INKS FOUR IN THE EARLY SIGNING PERIODKansas head soccer coach Mark Francis announced Nov. 11 that the Jayhawks signed four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Raena Childers (Grain Valley, Missouri), Emma Beltz (Raymore, Missouri), Magali “Maggie” Gagné (Montreal, Québec, Canada) and Hayven Harrison (Schertz, Texas) will all suit up in the Crimson and Blue next season.

Emma Beltz (Raymore, Mo., Raymore-Peculia HS)• A forward who plays club soccer for KC Athletics Academy. • Earned all-state second team honors in 2018 and all-region accolades in 2019.• A two-time all-conference performer who was the team’s offensive player of the year her sophomore and junior seasons at Raymore-Peculiar High School. • Scored 38 goals her freshman and sophomore years in high school• An outstanding student who is on the Principal’s Honor Roll at Ray-Pec.

“Emma is a local kid from Kansas City. She plays for KC Athletics. Emma is very dynamic. She’s a goal scorer. Every time I’ve watched her play, she’s scored. I like her mentality going at players. She’s dynamic, very technical and a good finisher. She has a massive upside for a player with the way she finishes.” – KANSAS COACH MARK FRANCIS

Raena Childers (Grain Valley, Mo., Grain Valley HS)• A midfielder who plays club soccer for KC Athletics Academy. • A two-time all-district, all-conference and all-state selection her freshman and sophomore seasons at Grain Valley High School.• Was Grain Valley’s Varsity Newcomer of the Year as a freshman and team captain and the school’s Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore.• Scored 22 goals and had 25 assists her freshman season and 25 goals and 10 assists her sophomore campaign.• An outstanding student who is a member of the National Honors Society. • Most of her family is involved in high-level soccer, be it at the club or collegiate levels. She is the younger sister of current KU junior Rylan Childers and has six siblings.

“Raena is a local player who plays for KC Athletics. Her sister Rylan plays for us. Raena is a very similar player. She plays in the midfield. She’s very athletic, very good on the ball. Like Rylan, she has a little bit of bite to her, a little nasty side to her. She will get in and challenge and win balls and has the ability to distribute and play out of the midfield. We’re graduating three from the midfield this year and I’m looking for Raena to come in and contribute right away and fill some of those gaps from the graduating players.” – KANSAS COACH MARK FRANCIS

Magali “Maggie” Gagné (Montreal, Québec, Canada)• Has played for the U17 Canadian National Team. • Two-time provincial champion and finished second place in the national championships in 2018 and 2019 while at College de Montreal. • Was the top scorer at the 2018 national championship with nine goals in six matches. • Was the RSEQ league’s top scorer with 48 goals in 26 matches in being named Most Valuable Player of the conference in 2018.• Also led the RSEQ with 40 goals in 21 matches in 2019. • Was twice named to the Award of Excellence for her academic success in 2017 and 2018.

“Magali is our first Canadian player since (junior) Kaela Hansen and our first from Montreal in quite a while. Magali has been with the U17 national team in Canada. She is a very dynamic player, very quick. Her mentality going at players and taking them on is very, very good. Something we look for in our attacking player is ability to beat the opponent on the dribble. She’s quick but also a really good finisher. Because of her pace, she gets in behind defenders a lot and has the ability to finish in different ways.” – KANSAS COACH MARK FRANCIS

Hayven Harrison (Schertz, Texas, Clemens HS)• One of the top goalkeepers in the San Antonio area playing club soccer for San Antonio Classic Elite.• Four-year soccer letterwinner while at Clemens High School. Also lettered in basketball her sophomore season. • Helped guide Clemens High School to the 2018 District and Bi-District titles in class 6A. • Named to the All District Academic Team in 2018. • Posted the Top 10 lowest goals-against average in the San Antonio area her freshman and junior seasons. • Became inspired to play college soccer while watching the U.S. National Team defeat Canada in the 2012 Olympics.

“She plays for the San Antonio Classic Elite. She has all the size and athleticism to be a major Division I and Big 12 goalkeeper. Coach (Kelly) Miller loves her potential. She’s an extremely hard worker. She’s coming into a very good goalkeeper crew right now but we’re looking to develop her the first year, working with Kelly and make the most of those physical attributes she has. She has a massive upside because of her size and athleticism.” – KANSAS COACH MARK FRANCIS

22nd SEASON AT KANSAS, 1999-PRESENT

Continuity is an essential part of a successful athletic program, and in his 21-plus seasons at the helm of Kansas soccer, head coach Mark Francis has brought just that.

After taking over a program just past its infancy, Francis effectively etched his signature on Kansas soccer by becoming not only the winningest coach in its history, but leading his team to nine NCAA Tournaments, 17 Big 12 Championship Tournaments and helping 77 student-athletes garner all-conference accolades, including seven that went on to earn All-America status.

Since 1999, Francis has amassed a 240-171-38 record, with 15 seasons of at least 10 victories. He is ranked second among active Big 12 coaches in wins at a single school. He also leads the league among active coaches with his 94 career Big 12 victories.

Francis’ résumé is extensive, as he has coached and played at nearly all levels of the game. Francis worked his way up through the head coaching ranks wearing a whistle at the high school, junior college, Division I and professional levels. As a player, Francis was a three-time All-American at SMU and spent 10 seasons playing professionally in the APSL, the NPSL and the USISL.

After moving into its new, state-of-the-art facility at Rock Chalk Park in 2014, Francis’ program took another step forward, elevating itself as one of the top teams in the Big 12 and a perennial top-25 NCAA squad. Now as the tenants of one of the top soccer facilities in the U.S., Francis and his staff are attracting some of the top talent from across the globe to Lawrence and the results over the last five seasons can back up the progress being made. Francis saw his Jayhawk team take the program even further in 2018 as he coached Kansas to its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance and their fifth in the second round of the Big Dance.

Francis saw his Jayhawk team take the program even further in 2019 as he coached Kansas to its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance, its fourth in six years, and its second trip to the Round of 16 of the Big Dance. KU put together a program-record stretch of 11-straight unbeaten results en route to a 17-win season, which was highlighted by the Jayhawks claiming its first-ever Big 12 Tournament Championship in addition to the run to the Sweet 16. Senior forward Katie McClure became the seventh Jayhawk in program history to earn All-America status, claiming a spot on the third team after posting a Big 12-leading 17 goals. Senior Addisyn Merrick also closed her KU career on a high note as she was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the second Jayhawk in three seasons to earn the honor. Both McClure and Merrick heard their name calls in the NWSL Draft shortly after season’s end, marking the first time in program history that two Jayhawks were selected in a single draft.

It was a season to remember for Francis and the Jayhawks in 2014, as he led his squad to one of the best seasons in program history. He picked up his 200th career coaching victory in KU’s 4-1 win over Wake Forest and proceed to see his team reel off eight-straight wins to start the season, the best start in program history. His team ended the year with 15 victories, the third-most ever by a Jayhawk squad and made the program’s sixth NCAA tournament appearance. Junior Liana Salazar also had a breakout season in becoming Kansas’ sixth All-America honoree after she was named to the Third Team.

Francis tallied his 150th KU coaching victory in 2012 and led his squad to its 10th 10-win season during his tenure in Lawrence. Senior Whitney Berry became KU’s all-time assists leader (32) and the program’s 11th player to be named to the All-Big 12 First Team.

The 2008 season was one for the record books as Kansas recorded 13 wins and returned to the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks knocked off four nationally-ranked teams en route to their tournament berth, including a pair of wins over long-time nemesis Texas A&M. KU became the first team in three years to defeat the Aggies twice in the same season.

The Jayhawks topped four other ranked teams during the season and capped their remarkable run with a 2-1 triumph over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Several players received accolades throughout and following the season. Freshman Emily Cressy was named a Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz as well as Soccer America, while teammates Monica Dolinsky and Johnson joined her on the All-Central Region Team. Dolinsky was also named All-Big 12 First Team, while Cressy became KU’s first Big 12 Rookie of the Year.

The 2004 season was a year filled with program firsts as numerous records were broken. The Jayhawks compiled a program-best record of 18-5 on their way to the Big 12 Championship. It was the first for the soccer team and second among KU women’s sports, the first going to basketball in 1997. Francis earned Big 12 Coach of the Year as well as the Central Region Coach of the Year honors. He also won his 100th overall match with a victory against Texas Tech on Oct. 1.

In 2003, Kansas soccer reached new heights under Francis’ leadership. The Jayhawks posted an 18-6-1 mark and advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. With a 6-3-1 record in the Big 12, KU finished third. Along with the team accomplishments, several players were honored for their efforts during the 2003 campaign, including Caroline Smith being named to several All-America teams as well as Holly Gault being selected as a Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz. With Francis’ help, KU’s players etched their names in the record book, as Smith became the program’s all-time leader in goals, points and game-winning goals and Miller set the school mark in career shutouts and career GAA.

In 2002, Francis led Kansas to an overall record of 11-7-2, including a then-school record six-straight wins and a seven-game unbeaten streak during

the first half of the season. The Jayhawks opened the season 6-1-1, marking their best start ever. Francis’ team ranked in the Central Region’s Top 10 for 10 consecutive weeks.

In 2001, Francis guided the Jayhawks to a 13-7-0 overall record and a 7-3-0 Big 12 mark. For his efforts, Soccer Buzz named Francis the 2001 Central Region Coach of the Year, as he led his Jayhawks into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Kansas finished the season ranked sixth in the Central Region, marking the ninth-best turnaround in the nation, improving five games from the previous season.

A standout player in his own right, Francis is a 1987 graduate of Southern Methodist University where he was a three-time All-America selection for the Mustangs. As a senior, he was named SMU’s Male Athlete of the Year, the Dallas All-Sports Association College Athlete of the Year and was selected to Soccer America’s All-College MVP Team. In addition, he was a two-time nominee for the Hermann Trophy, given to the nation’s most outstanding soccer player.

Professionally, Francis played 10 seasons as a member of the Dayton Dynamos (NPSL), Mobile Revelers, Dallas Rockets (USISL) and the Orlando Lions (APSL).

After being hired at South Alabama just a few weeks prior to the start of the 1996 season, Francis inherited a depleted roster and finished his first season with a 2-17 record. The following year, he led the Jaguars to an 18-3-1 mark, including an unbeaten regular season in Big South Conference play. The 16-win turnaround is still the biggest in NCAA Division I soccer history.

A native of London, England, Francis resides in Lawrence and has three children: Carlin (27), Hayley (25) and Caleb (23).
