Super Structure Foam

This fusible foam features a black core and black tricot on both sides, making it ideal

for costume making, bags, computer/tablet covers and more. Turn any textile into a dimension masterpiece ready for action.

Flexible and light weight structure that is easy to sew. The shape bounces back after

folding or molding.

Tricot

Super Structure Foam is made of out a tricot. Tricots are made to be run-resistant, lightweight fabrics, that are largely used as backing for bonded fabrics.

Super Structure Foam comes in two sizes 60” x 1 yrd in black and 60” x 2 yrd in black

Make sure to cut

Press Cloth Using Super Structure Foam requires you to use a press cloth.

A press cloth is used to keep the iron from direct contact with your fabric to help avoid scorching, shiny spots, and small stains. It also helps protect your iron and your projects when using iron-on or fusible interfacings, like Power Boost.

Press cloths are normally made of 100% white cotton, to help withstand heat.

Press cloths can be used with both a dry or steam iron.

Ironing

Before sewing fuse all fabric pieces to Super Structure Foam using an iron.

Follow all directions given with Super Structure Foam.

Make sure to set your ironing board up with heat re-sistant products to keep the board and your projects safe.

When working with Super Structure Foam make sure to always place the fabric WRONG side to the FUSIBLE side. The fusible side will be shiny.

Working with Super Structure Foam requires you to press down using the iron’s own weight to help fuse the fabric to the foam. Do not move the iron around as you normally would. Pick it back up, move it, and press down again. Repeat until the fabric is fully fused to the foam. Make sure to always have your press cloth covering your project.

Using your spray bottle filled with water, spray the cloth making it damp before continuing to press.

Do NOT leave the iron on the piece for too long or it will burn your project. Start off by counting to five then remove the iron and check the fuse. If it is not fused then repeat until fused.

Repeat for all fabric pieces.

*All irons heat differently. You may need to start off at a lower setting and slowly work your way up untilfinding the right temperature to achieve the proper bond.

*Working with Super Structure Foam requires the use of steam. Work carefully as even steam from an ironcan cause injury.

Edging the Fabric

In order to make the piece last longer all pieces should be edged, even the fused ones.

Using the zigzag stitch on the machine go around the outside border of each pattern piece, edging them.

Repeat for all pieces; Fabric, and Fused Lining

* An overlock can be used for this aswell.

* Some fabrics such as knits andfleeces do not have to be edged asthey do not unravel easily.

Adding Details

Before constructing the hat try adding some details using some Power Shine. Pick from the many colors of Power Shine Foil or Glitter

Follow all the directions with the Power Shine product

Make sure to set your ironing board up with heat resistant products to keep the board and your project safe. You will need to have a press cloth.

Working with Power Shine requires you to press down using the iron’s own weight to help fuse the applique to the fabric. Do not move the iron around as you normal would. Pick it back up, move it, press down again. Repeat until the applique is fully fused to the fabric.

Do NOT leave the iron on the piece for too long or it will burn your project. Start off by counting to three then remove the iron and check the fuse. If it is not fused then repeat until fused. Always remembering to put your press cloth back over your project before pressing with the iron.

Construction A Mage Hat only has two parts, the brim which is the large circle, and the crown which is the triangle part. Start by folding the crown in half, RIGHT sides together, pin if needed, then sew following pattern directions for seam allowance. Clip the top point of the crown, do NOT cut any of the stitching. This is done so that after turning the crown it has a smooth and finished look. It also helps with turning. Turn crown right side out. Place crown in center of brim, where the hole is. Place RIGHT sides together and pin. Sew, making sure to follow all seam allowances. Refer to photo for help. Sewing the crown to the brim can be tricky, if you have a free arm on your sewing machine use that. Remember to go slow, making sure to let the machine do the work. Do NOT pull on the project while sewing, that can cause the machine to have issues. If at any point your project sticks or looks to not be moving right, you can help by gently pushing it. Note: Most patterns call for a 3/8” or 5/8” seam allowance, hats however sometimes will call for a 1/2” seam allowance.

Lining

Repeat all steps for the lining. Sew the crown, RIGHT sides together. Turn Sew crown to brim of hat, keeping RIGHT sides together. Turn lining inside out. Once the lining is turned WRONG sides out put the whole piece inside of the crown of the hat. You will be placing both WRONG sides together. Tuck the brim of the lining into the crown of the hat, exposing raw edges. Using a hand needle and thread sew the edges of both crowns together. Pull the brim back out of the crown, covering up all raw edges. Pin the edges of both brims together. Baste stitch the seams together. Baste Stitch: A temporary stitch that is used to hold layers together until the seam is permanently sewn. The stitch is made by adjusting your stitch length to its widest setting. Note: Most patterns call for a 3/8” or 5/8” seam allowance, hats however sometimes will call for a 1/2” seam allowance.

Bias Tape Use bias tape for the binding. You can buy some, according to the sizing on your pattern directions. If making your own, make sure to cut the fabric on the bias, that is 45 degree angle from the grain line. This will give the fabric a little stretch, allowing it to bind easier than if cut along the grain line. Using a cutting matt and quilt temples will help give a cleaner and even cut. 1) Fold strips in half and iron. 2) Open tape and fold raw edges to half way mark on both sides. Iron 3) This will create your own bias tape.

1 2 3

Open the bias tape and pin the raw edge to bottom of the hat. Following seam allowance, stitch. Fold the binding over, following fold lines, pin and stitch. Leave a 4” space open for the wire.

Stitch Methods 1) Stitch in the Ditch Carefully follow along the seam on the hat and stitch between the two pieces of fabric. Stitching will be seen on the backside only. 2) Topstitch Stitch on top of the binding seam, creating a stitch seen on both sides. 3) Hand Sew Keeping the bias tape pined, work carefully hand stitching the seams down, always keeping the thread hidden. No stitching will be seen on either side.

Wire

Wrap electric tape around end of wire, making the edge safe to work with, and to keep it from poking through and damaging your project. Carefully thread the wire through the bias tap channel made. You will need to work slowly and carefully thread-ing the wire through the channel. Every now and then you may need to stop and adjust the wire, or guide it through a difficult spot. Do NOT push hard as this will bend the wire, or could even, with enough pressure, push it through your project. After threading the wire through the whole channel measure out an extra three inches and cut the wire with the wire cutters. Wrap electric tape around the end of the wire once again. You will have two ends with electric tape around the ends. Once fully threaded you will need to take the two ends of wire and tape them together. Look at photo for guide. Tip: When taping the wire and ends always make sure the tape is tight and smooth. Note: When working with wire and wire cutters make sure to follow all manufacture directions. Be careful as both the wire cutters and wire can cut you.

Finishing

Once the wire is in the hat, taped, and secured the four inch opening can be sewn closed. Sew the opening closed using the same method you used for the rest of the bias tape. Note: If you are sewing the opening closed by machine remember there is wire inside of the bias tape channel. Do NOT sew over the top of the wire you will break your sewing machine needle. Be careful when sewing the opening closed with your machine. Go slow and watch where your needle is hitting to make sure it does not get close to the wire.
