their 2007 Sweet 16 run. Seeded No. 4 in the West Region, SIU beat Holy Cross and Virginia Tech beore falling to top-seeded Kansas in a 61-58 heartbreaker. The team won 29 games, defeated five NCAA Tournament qualifiers and finished with its highest national ranking in school history (No. 11).

Quick Facts Carbondale is located in the southern tip of the state — about a five-hour drive south of Chicago and two hours southeast of St. Louis...Many of SIU’s alums are concentrated in those two cities... Since moving to Division I in 1968, SIU has been to the NCAA Tournament 10 times, including Sweet 16 appearances in 1977, 2002 and 2007. The Salukis have made nine NIT appearances.

Five at-large NCAA bids Southern Illinois received four at-large NCAA bids in a row from 2002-05 and one more in 2007.

NIT Championship in 1967 The Salukis won the NIT in 1967 behind future NBA stars Frazier and Dick Garrett. In addition to beating Marquette for the title, some of the prestigious victories of that season included an upset of No. 2 Louisville, as well as Duke at Madison Square Garden. At that time, the NIT was almost on par with the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA field that season featured 23 teams, while the NIT invited 14 teams.

Walt Frazier — The Rest of the Story Most people know that Southern’s most famous basketball alum is Walt Frazier (1964-67). What they don’t know is the story of how the Atlanta native ended up in Carbondale. Basketball was Frazier’s second-best sport in high school. He was offered a scholarship to play quarterback at Georgia Tech, but he didn’t want to play football. Frazier went on a recruiting visit to SIU in 1963 and met with AD Donald Boydston, who was progressive about recruiting minorities during a time when southern schools rarely recruited them. According to Boydston, Frazier didn’t say one word the whole trip, but called shortly after he took the train back to Atlanta to say he was enrolling at SIU. Frazier was dismissed from the team for academic issues after his sophomore year. He went back to Atlanta and got a job doing manual labor. Frazier called in August of 1965 and asked if he could come back. He was not eligible for a scholarship, so he paid his own way and sat out his junior year, making the Dean’s List. He played on the practice team, and sometimes they would beat the varsity. The 1966-67 storybook season saw Frazier lead the team to the NIT National Championship, beating Marquette in the finals. He turned pro after the season.
