HISTORY AND EVOLUTION

LED is the acronym of Light Emitting Dio-

de. The first LED was developed in 1962 in

the USA by Nick Holonyak Jr.

Initially LED were available with only one

monochromatic emission of about 700

nanometres of wave length, meaning of

red colour. Even having a high luminous

efficiency they could be used mainly just

as signals but not for general lighting.

In the following years yellow and gre-

en LED were developed but still were

excluded for use in the world of lighting.

Only in the ninety’s, finally, LED with a hi-

gher efficiency and greater colour range

were created until also blue colour was

possible and enabled the mixture of

light: one red, one green and one blue

LED resulting in white colour. The subse-

quent development resulted in the use

of LED emitting specific wave lengths by

means (image 1-2) of exciting a layer of

phosphor and letting it light with high

efficiency. The light had a wide spectrum

and therefore different shades of white

also considered as colour temperatures

– Kelvin. This represents the biggest re-

volution in the lighting world of the last

years introducing dynamics previously

related to electronics and giving plan-

ners a wide range of solutions and pos-

sibilities of energy saving which up to

then were unthinkable.

The LED technology reached in the last

years a drastically increase of efficiency

(lm/W) allowing the use of these com-

ponents in general lighting represen-

ting a valid alternative to traditional light

sources such as sodium high pressure

and metal halide discharge and fluore-

scent lamps.

In respect to these light sources LED

offers:

1- High efficiency in continuous growth,

at present LED are available with 160

lm/W and it seems possible to reach 200

lm/W in future (image 3).

2- High colour rendering CRI 70-90

3- Long lifetime > 50.000 h

4- Instant ignition

5- Excellent functioning also at very low

temperature (-25°C)

6- Tiny dimensions allowing the creation

of items with the most variable forms and

dimensions (image 4).

7- Good resistance to vibrations allowing

the use in harsh environments

8- Absence of infrared radiation emis-

sions andvery low UV radiation emission.

9- Absence of mercury

WHITE LIGHT

To generate white light normally one or

more blue LED are used which excite a la-

yer of phosphor which emits white light.

This light has the following characteri-

stics:

a) Colour temperature:

It is the temperature a black body should

have when the luminous radiation emit-

ted by itself appears chromatically as clo-

se as possible to the considered radiation

of the light to measure.

A low temperature (e.g. 2000°K) corre-

sponds to a yellow-orange colour. Even

lower one passes to red and to infrared,

which one can’t see anymore, whereas by

rising the temperature the light becomes

first white, then blue, violet and finally ul-

traviolet. If commonly said a light is warm

it is in reality corresponding to a low co-

lour temperature and vice versa a higher

temperature results in a commonly defi-

ned cool light.

These definitions are simply psycholo-

gically based since our mind associates

to colours like yellow-orange the idea of

heat and to colours like white and blue

coldness.

7

To notice that to talk about colour tempe-

rature makes only sense if the light source

emits a continuous energy spectrum.

This does not happen to all light sources.

Chromatic zones (BIN) (image 6): the LED

production is divided into areas defining

the chromatic coordinates.

These are so called BIN. Deliveries are

subject to a certain BIN number; the lo-

wer the number the better colour unifor-

mity.

FAEBER decided to use batches of low BIN

number even if it might result in a higher

price.

b) Colour Rendering Index (CRI):

This is the ability of a light source to di-

stinguish colours of a total sample refe-

rence (generally 8).

The norm UNI 10380 splits the different

values of the chromatic rendering index

in five groups:

• 1A: 90%

• 1B: 80% 90%

• 2: 60% 80%

• 3: 40% 60%

• 4: 20% 40%

image 6

Page 8: GALLERIE E TUNNEL - Select Light · 5 GALLERIE E TUNNEL image 3 image 4 sibilities of energy saving which up to then were unthinkable. The LED technology reached in the last years

8

The norm also suggests which CRI to be

used according to

the place to illuminated:

• 1A: housing, museums, graphic studios,

hospitals, medical cabinet, etc.

• 1B: offices, schools, shops, gyms, thea-

tres, textile and colour production, etc.

• 2: passage rooms, corridors, staircases,

elevators, gyms, service areas, etc.

• 3: indoor industrial, offices, warehouses

etc.

• 4: parking lots, piers, construction area,

loading areas etc.

Cold light LED generally have a CRI of 70-

75 whereas warm light ones of 75-80 and

sometimes over 90.

INTERNATIONAL CODES FOR COLOUR

TEMPERATURE:

At an International level a light source can

be defined with a 3 digit code.

The first digit is the chromatic rendering:

9 = Ra 90÷100

8 = Ra 80÷90

7 = Ra 70÷80

6 = Ra 60÷69

Page 9: GALLERIE E TUNNEL - Select Light · 5 GALLERIE E TUNNEL image 3 image 4 sibilities of energy saving which up to then were unthinkable. The LED technology reached in the last years

9

image 7

The second and third digit is the colour

temperature:

27 = 2700 K

30 = 3000 K

40 = 4000 K

65 = 6500 K

E.g.: /830 defines a light source with chro-

matic index of 80-90 and a colour tempe-

rature of 3000°K.

COLOURED LED

By pondered mixing of light sources ha-

ving the 3 primary colours red, green and

blue (RGB) it is possible to obtain all iris

colours (image 7).

The chromatic diagram CIE defines a co-

lour area which includes all colours visi-

ble to the human eye, independent of

the luminance. To obtain all colours light

fixtures are equipped with primary co-

lours LED and dimmable drivers run with

different protocols among which DMX

is the most common.

FAEBER LIGHTING SYSTEM supplies on de-

mand Fixtures and necessary interfaces

to generate and manage these signals.

LED LIFETIME

LED are electronic components having a

long but not Infinite lifetime. Generally

LED do not “die” and switch off but pro-

gressively lower the light values to a not

acceptable level.

The presumed lifetime of an LED is con-

sidered by the number of hours within a

certain percentage of samples presents a

percentage of higher flux compared to a

fraction of the initial flux.

E.g. 50.000h L70B10 means that after

50.000h at least 90% of the LED Still

have a flux of 70% compared to the ini-

tial flux.

HEAT MANAGEMENT

Different factors influence the life of an

LED (image 8) but the one in particular is

the junction temperature (Tj) which is sup-

posed to be the lowest possible (image 9).

LED manufacturers submit lists indicating

the presumed lifetime based on this tem-

perature.

To guarantee a long lifetime of the pro-

duct it is therefore essential for the de-

sign to use technical devices (radiators,

thermal interfaces etc) aimed to dissipate

the produced heat correctly.

Being conscious about this, FAEBER desi-

gns its fixtures so to ensure the tempera-

tures are far below the recommended

maximums.

POWER SUPPLY

Another very important aspect to achie-

ve an efficient, save and long lasting pro-

duct relies on the choice of a correct dri-

ver which has to supply over the whole

lifetime of the LED the right current.

To maximize energy saving, it is also pos-

sible to use dimmable drivers which re-

duce the emitted light when full emission

is not needed so to lower the absorbed

power.

This is very important in management of

street and tunnel lighting.

The most diffused dimming protocols

are with bus 1-10V, PWM or DALI. Items

equipped with dimmable drivers can be

integrated in installations managed by

remote serial signals (RS485), power line

signals or radio signals by using appro-

priate interfaces.

FAEBER has chosen to use SELV drivers

(extreme low security voltage) as to en-

sure maximum security also during main-

tenance of the fittings.

LED FIXTURES AND STREET LIGHTING

Street lighting is one of the fields where

LED fixtures show all their advantages

compared to items with discharge lamps.

This is due further to the already mentio-

ned high efficiency and versatility of LED

to the following aspects:

1) High chromatic rendering with spec-

trum leading towards the blue zone. In

fact during night vison (scotopic) the sen-

sibility of the human eye tends towards

frequencies near to blue (image 10).

To obtain the same visual effect of a so-

dium high pressure lamp by using an LED

less light and therefore energy is used.

The Italian norm UNI 11248 takes this

scientific phenomena into consideration

and allows to declass by one category

if light sources with a CRI > 60 are used.

E.g. if a street taken into consideration is

classified ME3a it can be classified ME4a if

these light sources are used.

The norm UNI-EN13201 demands for

a correct illumination of ME3a streets

1.0cd/m2 and 0.75 cd/m2 for a ME4a, so

25% less light (image 11).

2) Possibility to obtain a great number of

different photometries which can be ap-

plied to all type of streets (image 12).

This allows to direct all the light on the

street itself and to avoid dispensations im-

proving the coefficient of use (image 13).

The amount of light emitted towards the

external area of the carriage way (the red

traced area) is clearly lower when good

LED are used (b) in respect of the same

emission in that area when traditional

lights are used (a).

The indicated percentages refer to a typi-

cal installation and lead to a factor of use

UF which is in case (a) 0,8 x 0,55 = 0,4 and

in case (b) 0,8 x 0,75 = 0,6

3) Long lifetime of the LED allow to incre-

ase the reliability of an installation and to

reduce drastically the maintenance inter-

vals and therefore its costs in particular in

critical conditions like in tunnels.

Notice that not only the use of LED is

sufficient to really implement energy sa-

ving but the whole engineering parame-

ters are correctly defined like choice of

sources, optics, thermal management etc.

To determine in quantity if a lighting

fixture is good the first data to be consi-

dered is it’s efficiency (lm/W) (image 14).

In case of street lighting it is furthermore

necessary to define if a particular product

is suitable to illuminate a street. This can

be only done by knowing its photometry

and a light calculation to determine the

efficiency of the whole installation mea-

ning the amount of power needed to illu-

minate one kilometre [W/km].

At an international level attempts are

made to define a labelling method to the-

se parameters.

APPLICABLE NORMSThe use of LED as a light source is a still young technology which has revolutionized the world of lighting fixtures and flooded the market also with unsafe and unreliable products. After the initial confusion, thanks to the effort of regulatory agencies lots of technical norms have been implemented to help producers to make good products. The norms are generally divided into safety and performance. Following the situation on IEC/EN norms concerning LED available at present:
