GALILEO GALILEI: DESCRIZIONE DEL
MICROSCOPIO (1624)La lettera reca la data del 23 settembre 1624
ed scritta da Bellosguardo dove lo scienziato abitdal 1617 al 1631.
Si tratta della descrizione pidettagliata del microscopio che
possibile reperirenegli scritti di Galileo. Essa mette in evidenza
iproblemi di illuminazione degli oggetti daosservare, la modalit di
messa a fuoco e concludecon alcune osservazioni naturalistiche.

Invio a V. E. un occhialino per vedere da vicino lecose minime,
del quale spero che ella sia perprendersi gusto e trattenimento non
piccolo, chcos accade a me. Ho tardato a mandarlo, perchnon lho
prima ridotto a perfezzione, havendo hautodifficolt in trovare il
modo di lavorare icristalli perfettamente. Loggetto sattacca
sulcerchio mobile, che nella base, e si va movendopervederlo tutto,
atteso che quello che si vede inun'occhiata piccola parte. E perch
la distanza fralalente e loggetto vuol esser puntualissima,
nelguardar gl'oggetti che hanno rilievo bisogna potereavvicinare e
discostare il vetro, secondo che siriguarda questa o quella parte;
e per il cannoncinosi fatto mobile nel suo piede, o guida che dir
lavogliamo. Devesi ancora usarlo all'aria moltoserena e lucida, e
meglio al sole medesimo,ricercandosi che loggetto sia illuminato

contemplati moltissimi animalucci con infinitaammirazione: tra i
quali la pulce orribilissima, lazanzara e la tignuola son
bellissimi; e con grancontento ho veduto come faccino le mosche et
altrianimalucci a camminare attaccati a' specchi, etanco di sotto
in su. Ma V. E. haver campolarghissimo di osservar mille e mille
particolari, de iquali la prego a darmi avviso delle cose
picuriose. In somma ci da contemplare infinitamentela grandezza
della natura, e quanto sottilmenteella lavora, e con quanta

GALILEO GALILEI: DESCRIPTION OF THE
MICROSCOPE (1624)
The letter, bearing the date September 23, 1624, was written
from Bellosguardo, where the scientist lived from 1617 to 1631.
It
contains the most detailed description of the microscope to
be
found in the writings of Galileo. It discusses the problems
of
lighting the objects to be observed and the mode of adjusting
the
focus, concluding with some "naturalist" observations.

I am sending Your Excellency an "occhialino" to see the
tiniest things close up, which I hope will afford you much
pleasure and entertainment, as has been the case with myself.

delayed in sending it because I had not yet brought it to
perfection, having had difficulty in finding a way of grinding
the
lenses perfectly. The object is attached to the mobile circle,
which
is in the base, and is moved about so as to see all of it, since
what
is seen at one look is only a small part. And because the
distancebetween the lens and the object must be very precise, to
look at
objects in relief it must be possible to bring the glass closer
or
further away, according to whether one is looking at this or
that
part; and so the tube has been made mobile in its foot, to
be
guided as we wish. It must also be used in very calm, bright
air,
and better in sunlight itself, so that the object is very well
lit. I
have contemplated a great many tiny animals with infinite
admiration. Among them the flea is most horrible, the
mosquitoand the moth are beautiful; and with great satisfaction I
have seen
how it is that flies and other tiny creatures can walk attached
to
mirrors, and even upside down. But Your Excellency will have
occasion to observe thousands and thousands of details, of
which
I request you to notify me of the most curious things. In brief,
one
can contemplate infinitely the grandeur of nature, and how
subtly
she works, and with what indescribable diligence.
