Gaining & Maintaining Momentum

Stop Signs and Speed Limits

Last month I introduced you to the gearbox of Discipleshift, Jim Putnam’s necessary shifts for becoming a disciple-making church.

1. From REACHING to MAKING 2. From INFORMING to EQUIPPING 3. From PROGRAM to PURPOSE 4. From ACTIVITY to RELATIONSHIP 5. From ACCUMULATING to DEPLOYING

Getting into gear sometimes requires a little grinding. Gaining and maintaining momentum means avoiding side-streets and detours and getting out on the open highway (something Josh and I have yet to do in his driving education).

The final shift, or that fifth gear if you will, is overdrive, i.e. where we cruise at highway speed. It is the model of efficiency and effectiveness. When we are deploying the majority of our members into ministry and the making of more disciples we will be up to speed riding the momentum of growing relationships, intentional leadership, and deepening spiritual maturity. But getting up to speed is a process and we have to agree on what the goal and destination are! (continued on page 3… Momentum)

Leadership Team

Falls Busy Schedule

Summer is about to end and school is back in full swing which means most vacation trips are over. School, with its many activities, will soon take over schedules but we look forward to seeing everyone back at church on Sunday and Wednesday evenings.

As we start into fall the Leadership Team has a number of items that need to be done before the year ends. The Church Bylaws revision should soon be out for review. The plan is to release the draft and the following week hold a meeting to go over the details. This should hopefully be completed by the end of September.

This is the time of year to identify potential leaders to fill upcoming vacancies on the Leadership Team. Team leaders will be needed to serve three-year terms beginning February 1, 2017. If you have an interest in serving or know someone you would like the committee to considered, share that with any member of the Team or with the church office.

Another very important item will be preparing the 2017-18 annual budgets. As you know this year has been a struggle in meeting our budget projections so you can expect to see a budget that is significantly pared down.

Because of the budget shortfall, the Leadership Team enacted a number of measures to reduce spending. One of these was a reduction in Pastor Jon’s salary. This requires up to 21 unpaid furlough days with no more than 10 consecutive days to be taken in any one month. Pastor will be taking the first of these days off in September. It is not typical for Pastor Jon to be away for this length of time but will be out two-consecutive Sundays in September. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

The Leadership Team, Pastor Jon, and the entire congregation has been working with Dr. Graybill. He is not scheduled for any further church services but he continues to work with Pastor on a weekly basis & will be attending the September Leadership Team meeting. We feel we have come a long way from where we started, have a lot further to go and are looking forward to his feedback.

Finally, coming soon, October is Pastor Appreciation Month. Nothing formal is planned, but the Leadership Team encourages each of you to be prepared to go out of your way in October to express your appreciation for all that Pastor Jon, Pastor Rick and Pastor Larry do for us as individuals and for our church. Reminders of this special time will be in the October bulletins.

The Leadership Team thanks all of you for your support, for hearing from you, and for the many words of encouragement we have received. We ask for your continued prayers.

Blessings!

Marion

(Momentum continued…)

Becoming a mature disciple ultimately means we become missionaries and disciple-makers ourselves. [See John 20:21, Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 1:8]

Now this doesn’t mean we are alone or expected to do every facet. Actually it requires we be a team! Being deployed (or cruising at highway speed) means we are doing what we were made to do, & becoming who we were made to be!

These short-articles will no more get us up to speed than having Josh reading the driver’s manual will make him a proficient driver. It actually takes getting into the driver’s seat (with an instructor present) and having some training and getting experience.

To that end beginning on September 14 and/or 18 we will begin “Driver’s Ed” for our Discipleshift. We’re actually calling it Leading the Discipleshift. It’s a strategic alignment of our small group offerings this fall. Our intention is to align our focus and energy around the most wildly important goals: Healthy Church Culture, a Clear and Common Mission, and Community Impact.
