SHAH’S ILIAD ON DERBY TRAIL WITH SAN VICENTE WINBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Trainer Doug O'Neill used the 2016 San

Vicente Stakes (G2) to launch Nyquist's 3-year-old campaign toward the Kentucky Derby Present-ed by Yum! Brands (G1) and could have another Triple Crown contender after the 2017 edition.

After racing just off a rapid pace set by O'Neill stablemate Blabimir, Kaleem Shah's Iliad took the outside route three-wide in the turn, and drew off in the stretch to win by 3 1/2 lengths in the $200,000 stakes Feb. 12 at Santa Anita Park.

"He's a really nice horse," O'Neill said of Iliad. "He has a lot of class. He ran huge today. We just tried not to screw him up."

Law Abidin Citizen moved up from last in the backstretch with a rail-hugging move and even put a head in front in the turn, but was no match for the bay Ghostzapper ridgling in the stretch. Law Abidin Citizen finished a clear second, 4 1/2 lengths in front of 4-5 favorite Battle of Midway, who never seriously threatened in the race.

Blabimir set fractions of :21.89 and :44.08 through a half-mile and was eased in the stretch. It was the third time in five starts the son of Tapizar has been eased or did not

finish. Iliad, 1 1/2 lengths in front through six furlongs in 1:08.52, hit the wire under jockey Flavien Prat in 1:21.62.

"It was a very lucky pick-up mount," Prat said after taking over for Rafael Bejarano, who was involved in a spill Feb. 11 and took Sunday off. "He's a very nice horse. He broke well (and) actually showed a lot of speed today. We were going pretty fast and I was trying to relax him all the way down the backside.

"When I asked him, he performed so well."

It was the first stakes win for Shah after his split with trainer Bob Baffert on New Year's Eve. Baffert's San Vicente entry, Aquamarine, came in fourth.

"We can all hope and pray for horses like this," Shah said of Iliad, who broke his maiden in a

six-furlong sprint at Los Alamitos Race Course by 3 1/2 lengths for Baffert Dec. 18. "I'm glad Iliad came along. I hope he continues to move forward. It's one race at a time in this business, but it looks very promising now."

Bred in Kentucky by Sungyeoun Lim, out of the You and I mare Little Swoon, Iliad now has two wins from three starts and $147,345 in earnings. Iliad was a $285,000 purchase by Baffert for Shah at the 2016 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company March 2-year-olds in training sale from the Eddie Woods' consignment.

Shah said the plan for now is to keep the horse at Santa Anita for the San Felipe Stakes (G2) March 11 and "hopefully" the April 8 Santa Anita Derby (G1). BH

TAMPA BAY DERBY COULD BE NEXT FOR MCCRAKENBy BloodHorse Staff

Ian Wilkes says his role in helping McCraken get to the May 6 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1)

at Churchill Downs is relatively simple."I've just got to stay out of his way and let him take

me," Wilkes said Feb. 12.The unbeaten 3-year-old colt raised his connections'

optimism several notches Feb. 11 at Tampa Bay Downs, where he won the $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) by 1 1/2 lengths.

Wilkes said it is likely McCraken will return for the March 11 Tampa Bay Derby (G2).

"You can't lock yourself into one place, but the timing is good to come back," he said.

The son of Ghostzapper—Ivory Empress, by Seeking the Gold, is a homebred racing for the Whitham Thoroughbreds operation of Janis Whitham.

McCraken, named after a city in Kansas (spelled "McCracken") about 110 miles from Whitham's hometown of Leoti, returned to Wilkes' Palm Meadows Training Center base in Boynton Beach, Fla., Saturday night. Wilkes said the colt walked and had a bath this morning and all signs are positive.

"It's just a good thing to get him back in action and get him going as a 3-year-old, and the way he ran makes you feel like he proved a little more," Wilkes said. "A lot of 3-year-olds on the Derby trail keep getting better and bigger and stronger this time of year, so we have to keep going.

"I've always said he's going to take me to (the Kentucky Derby) if he's good enough, and it's exciting any time you have a horse with Derby potential."

Should McCraken get back to Churchill, where he was undefeated in three starts last year, he would be Wilkes' first starter in the Derby. But Wilkes was a part of Hall of Fame trainer Carl Nafzger's two victories in the Run for the Roses. The first

came with Unbridled in 1990, but he played an even larger role in the development of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, who won the Tampa Bay Derby before his Louisville triumph.

Street Sense and Super Saver (2010), who finished third in the Tampa Bay Derby, are the only Kentucky Derby winners to prepare at Tampa Bay.

Tapwrit was almost as impressive Saturday, showing good energy in deep stretch under jockey Jose Ortiz to finish a clear second. He could also return for the Tampa Bay Derby, trainer Todd Pletcher said Sunday.

"He's improving all the time," said Pletcher, who could also bring his 5-year-old mare Isabella Sings back to Tampa for the $200,000 Hillsborough Stakes (G2T) after her Lambholm South Endeavour Stakes (G3T) victory. "I will get with the connections, but both are possible for March 11."

No Dozing, the third choice in the Sam F. Davis, never found his best stride and finished sixth. Trainer Arnaud Delacour said the Remsen Stakes (G2) runner-up came back in fine fettle and offered no excuses for his dull performance.

"He seems fine. He just had a bad race, but I don't really know why," Delacour said. "We'll see in the next couple of days. I'm a little disappointed, but we still would consider the Tampa Bay Derby if he breezes well. He needs to show me there are no problems." BH

ALMANAAR PROVIDES DUBAWI WITH U.S. GRADE 1By BloodHorse Staff

Shadwell Stud and leading stallion Dubawi secured another grade 1 victory in America Feb. 11 through

the British-bred Almanaar in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1T).

The 5-year-old was bred by owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's operation out of his homebred Bahhare mare Baqah, who won three times for Freddy Head, including the 2004 Prix de Sandringham (G2) for 3-year-old fillies in France. She also finished third in the group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket against fillies and mares.

It was a 27th individual top-flight winner as a stallion for Dubawi, who stands for £250,000 ($265,940) at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket. The son of Dubai Millennium has become a shining light of the British breeding industry, producing such champions as Makfi, Al Kazeem, and last year's Juddmonte International and Coronation Cup winner Postponed.

Almanaar also started off his racing career with Head in France, where he won four times, including two group 3 events at Chantilly. He was transferred to Chad Brown's care last year and appeared twice before making his stakes debut in North America with a narrow second in last month's Fort Lauderdale Stakes (G2T) at Gulfstream Park.

Stepped up slightly in trip to nine furlongs for the $350,000 prize on the same course in Florida, he settled in mid-pack by jockey Joel Rosario and began to

deliver his challenge on the turn for home. Almanaar stayed out of trouble in the middle of the track and powered through to score by three-quarters of a length.

"It was lovely to see, especially with a homebred," said Shadwell's racing manager, Angus Gold. "He's quite a big horse for a Dubawi. He had quite a nasty stifle cyst as a young horse and was given plenty of time.

"He had a few problems but did well in France. I suggested Sheikh Hamdan send him to America and he had rather disappeared off the radar. He is obviously improving as he gets older. He always looked like he was going to win."

It was the biggest success for Baqah, who has also produced the four-time winner Funon.

"Baqah was very good, one of the best of the Bahhare mares there ever was," Gold said. "She's 16 and hasn't bred a lot, but this is obviously a very good horse. We've had the family all the way back to (dam) Filfilah and (grand-dam) El Rabab, who was by Roberto. They could all run a bit." BH

SHAREHOLDER VALUE POSSIBLE FOR RISEN STARBy BloodHorse Staff

Klaravich Stables and Bill Lawrence's Shareholder Value continues to work well toward his next start

for conditioner Tom Amoss.A striking son of Uncle Mo, Shareholder Value

flashed impressive acceleration in his last two starts, including an allowance tally over well-regarded Society Beau in December and then a wide, late-charging fifth in the $200,000 Lecomte Stakes (G3) Jan. 21, beaten only 2 1/4 lengths by winner Guest Suite and a half-length for third.

The 3-year-old colt, a $190,000 purchase at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale, worked a sharp half-mile in :48 flat Feb. 11, pleasing his connections.

"It was one of his best works," Amoss said. "He went really well. As of this point, I'm going to look at the (nominations) for the ($400,000) Risen Star (grade 2, Feb. 25) and go from there. We haven't made a decision yet with him, but it's very much on the radar."

Shareholder Value's time was the sixth-best of 97 moves and was a a full two seconds faster than his previous drill one week prior at the same distance.

He has a pair of victories from six starts and has faced salty competition. In addition to Guest Suite and Untrapped, the first two finishers in the Lecomte, he was sixth behind McCraken in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs three back. BH

BOLO, WHAT A VIEW MAY REMATCH IN KILROE MILEBy BloodHorse Staff

Bolo and What a View, who treated Santa Anita Park racegoers to to a thrilling race Feb. 11 when they

finished a head apart in the grade 2 Arcadia Stakes at one mile on turf, could return for an encore perfor-mance in the $400,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1T) on Santa Anita Handicap Day March 11.

Both camps reported Sunday that their charges came out of the Arcadia in good order, trainer Carla Gaines speaking of Bolo and trainer Kenny Black of What a View.

Golden Pegasus Racing and Earle Mack's Bolo, making his first start since July 17 when he finished ninth in the Eddie Read Stakes (G2T) at Del Mar, appeared a beaten fourth in the field of five at the three-sixteenths marker, but unleashed a furious late rally under Mike Smith to overtake pacesetting What a View and held on to win by a head. It marked the second straight year Bolo has won the Arcadia.

However, What a View turned the tables on Bolo when they met last year in the Kilroe Mile, when he was 3 3/4 lengths in front at the wire.

Smith also guided Vale Dori to victory in yesterday's Santa Maria Stakes (G2) and trainer Bob Baffert stated following the race that she'd be pointed to the Santa Margarita Stakes (G1) March 18. BH

LOUISIANA PREMIER NIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP TO MOBILE BAYBy BloodHorse Staff

Tigertail Ranch's Mobile Bay pushed his career earnings over $1 million with his one-length win in

the $150,000 Louisiana Premier Night Championship Stakes Feb. 11 at Delta Downs.

Mobile Bay broke sharply under jockey Diego Saenz in the 1 1/16-mile test and took the lead after The Pickett Factor set the initial pace, clocking an opening quarter in :24.31. The eventual winner led the field of 10 onto the backstretch while going the half mile in :48 flat and three quarters in 1:12.49.

When 5-year-old son of Lone Star Special reached the homestretch he was confronted by The Pickett Factor, who moved alongside the leader but could not get past and was beaten by one length on the finish line. Fort Pulaski finished another 4 1/2 lengths behind the top pair in third.

The Victor Arceneaux-trainee covered the distance over a fast track in 1:44.81.

The win by Mobile Bay marked the 10th triumph of his 25-race career and the $90,000 first-place prize put his career bankroll over the seven-digit mark at $1,006,440.

Bred in Louisiana by his owner, Mobile Bay is a 5-year-old out of the Out of Place mare Tranquility Bay.

Sent off at 4-5 odds, Mobile Bay returned $3.60, $2.80, and $2.20 across the board. The Pickett Factor paid $5.20 and $3.40. Fort Pulaski was worth $12.60.

In other action on Louisiana Premier Night, it was Mallory Greiner's Underpressure winning the $100,000 Prince Stakes by two lengths with Saenz in the saddle for trainer Chris Richard.

The $100,000 Starlet Stakes was annexed by Mr. Al's Gal, who reported home 4 3/4 lenghts in front with jockey Richard Eramia at the controls. Mr. Al's Gal is owned by Brittlyn Stable, Inc. and is conditioned by Justin Jeansonne.

The $100,000 Matron Stakes was the scene of Sunny Oak's latest score as she easily won by 3 1/2 lengths with jockey Miguel Mena riding for trainer Edward Johnston. Sunny Oak is owned by Keith Plaisance.

This year's $100,000 Distaff Stakes was taken by Maggi Moss's Big World, who was ridden to a four-length victory by jockey Gerard Melancon. Big World is conditioned by Tom Amoss.

Ironwater Farms Joint Venture's Icy Gentleman pulled an upset in the $100,000 Sprint Stakes with a 3-length score with jockey Jorge Guzman aboard for trainer Henry B. Johnson Jr.

Night Parade won this year's $50,000 Ladies Starter by three lengths with jockey Larry Taylor aboard. Night Parade is owned by Rhonda Snodderly and is trained

by Alex De Beauville. The $50,000 Gentlemen Starter was

won by Flit N Time, who was also ridden by Diego Saenz to a 7 1/4-length win. The winner is trained by Sam Breaux and is owned by Bonnie Wall.

The $50,000 Bon Temps Starter saw upsetter Lady Emily Sage make it to the wire in front by a head. Colby Hernandez rode the winner for trainer Rickey Courville and owners David Roy and Ricky Courville.

The night was capped off with a win by He's All Ours, who nosed out Totally Ours in the Ragin Cajun Starter with jockey Roberto Morales in the saddle. He's All Ours is owned by Dale White and is trained by Eduardo Ramirez. BH

MONACO SCORES IMPRESSIVE MAIDEN WINBy Mary Reedert @BH_MReeder

Derrick Smith, Repole Stable, Michael Tabor, and Su-san Magnier's Monaco broke his maiden in his third

start Feb. 12, in a Tampa Bay Downs maiden special weight for 3-year-olds and upward, drawing off to score easily by 12 lengths.

Repole Stable and M.V. Magnier went to $1.3 million for the son of Uncle Mo at last year's Ocala Breeders' Sale Co.'s March sale of 2-year-olds in training. The colt, bred in Kentucky by Sierra Farm out of the grade 1-placed mare Setareh, was consigned by Cary Frommer.

Under Jesus Castenon, Monaco sat just off the leader Teddy's Honor, but had a head in front coming out of the first turn in the one-mile, 40-yard race on the fast track. He then pulled away in the backstretch and was kept to task in the final stretch, stopping the clock in 1:43 flat.

In his debut at Saratoga Race Course in August, Monaco finished sixth in a six-furlong maiden special weight for trainer Todd Pletcher, but did not make his second start until January at Gulfstream Park.

Under John Velazquez in his sophomore debut, Monaco tracked the leader throughout that race and dueled to the wire but lacked kick near the end of the 1 1/16-mile contest. He finished second to Fire for Effect by a half-length. BH

ANALYSIS

NORTHERN AFLEET BEST IN DURABILITY STUDYBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Sources of stamina among North Amer-ican stallions seems to be getting

leaner as judged by the recent release of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation's annual report of sire durabil-ity and soundness (see near pg. 66 in the Feb. 11 issue of BloodHorse).

Among the leading 30 stallions by starts per starter, 13 sires have died, two are pensioned, and three have been relocated to either Argentina or Australia.

The stallions included in the durability study are the top 200 sires by progeny earnings for the 2016 calendar year in order to assure relevance to the commercial breeding and sales market. The study's key statistics of starts per starter and percentage of starters from foals of racing age, however, are all lifetime statistics.

Combing through the study, one stallion consistently ranked among top sires by various statistics published.

Taylor Made Stallions' veteran Northern Afleet ranked among the top 10 by starts per starter, the top 20 by percentage of starters from foals of racing age, the top 10 by number of 2016 graded stakes winners 4 years old and up, and was in the top 12 by number of 2016 black-type stakes winners 4 years old and older. He stands for $6,500 this year.

The 24-year-old son of Afleet—Nuryette, by Nureyev, has 16 crops of racing age. He is the 16th-leading sire in the Grayson-Jockey Club study by percentage of starters from foals of racing age with 81.2%. If only active North American sires are considered, he is the seventh-leading sire behind More Than Ready (1,253 foals, 86.8% starters), Petionville (736, 86.1%), Weigelia (75, 85.3%),

Langfuhr (1,328, 85.1%), Street Sense (466, 84.1%), and Mass Media (199, 81.4%).

By lifetime starts per starter, Northern Afleet is the third-leading active sire with 19.87 out of 1,328 foals of racing age. The top active sire in this category is Murmur Farm's Petionville, who has 21.26 starts per starter out of 736 foals. The 25-year-old son of Seeking the Gold stands for $5,000. Ranked second by starts per starter at 20.48 is Lane's End's Langfuhr, a 25-year-old son of Danzig, who stands this year for $5,000.

Among all sires—active, pensioned, and dead—the leaders by starts per starter are Mutakddim, a son of Seeking the Gold, who has 23.91 starts/starter out of 797 foals; and, former Maryland stalwart Not For Love, a son of Mr. Prospector, who has 21.90 starts/starter out of 974 foals. Mutakddim died in 2014, while Not For Love died in 2016.

Besides durability, Northern Afleet's runners have shown class as well. He is co-ranked in 12th by 2016 black-type stakes winners with five that were 4 years old and up and co-ranked in eighth place with three graded/group winners that were 4 or older. His graded/group winners last year include World Approval, winner of the United National Stakes (G1), Kaigun, winner of the Pan American Stakes (G2), and Baccelo, who won the Philip H. Iselin Stakes (G3). BH
