SAVING A RACEHORSE FROM SLAUGHTER: THE STORY OF LOT 614by Stephanie Brennan

(In 2009, the non-profit charity Final Furlong RaceHorse Retirement program was started by the NiallBrennan Stables for graduates of their program and fortheir clients' horses. Their goal is to find a caring homesuitable to each horse's ability: show, pleasure or sim-ple retirement. Stephanie, wife of Niall, is the adminis-trator of Final Furlong)

First, let me say that the story that follows is notmeant to cast blame, admonish or point fingers at any-one. It is to point out why we need a central, organized

agency that canhelp those who aretrying to locatehorses--to offer abetter alternative toowners and trainersother than slaugh-ter. It should offerguidance and sup-port to all thegroups that operateto help thesehorses.

The story begins with More Than Capable, aKentucky-bred son of More Than Ready who was soldprivately as a two-year-old in 2007. He had an unim-pressive racing career, never burning up the tracks ofLouisiana as his owners desired. He did, however, start28 times, winning three races and earning $49,473,better than many. His last race was May 29, when hewas seventh for a tag of $4,000. He had also run forthe same price nine days earlier. At Final Furlong, we put all our horses into a virtualstable and track their racing careers. As they get olderand drop down in class, we keep a closer eye on them. When the horses start running poorly for the cheapertags, we contact the trainers, send them a brochureexplaining the program and let them know that ourprogram is available to those horses. This horse's trainer was contacted by Final Furlongon Tuesday, June 1.

We were unable to get in touch with him, but left amessage with the secretary at the training center wherehe was located. On Thursday, June 3, the trainer calledus early in the morning to let us know he had just re-ceived the message. Sadly, he informed us, the ownerhad picked up the horse Wednesday and taken him tothe auction. The trainer provided us with the necessarydetails and we were able to find out that the horse wassold to a "broker" for $100. The auction company was very accommodating. They gave us the new owner=s name and a contactnumber for the horse now known as >lot 614.= Unfortu-nately, it was a discon-nected cell number. Af-ter calling a good friendwho had a winter stringin Louisiana, progresswas made--her assistanthappily went to thestockyards to see if thehorse was still there. The horse had left onehour prior to his arrival. The next day was spenttrying to locate the bro-ker. Every option was explored. Numerous calls weremade to the Louisiana HBPA, Horse Rescue Organiza-tions, police departments, and local vets--all withoutsuccess. We had four people calling every conceivablelead non stop throughout the day, all to no avail. A glimmer of hope appeared on the horizon when wewere given the name and number of a veterinarian atEagle Pass, Texas. We learned that would be the nextand last stop for the horse before he headed to the killpens in Mexico. The vet was contacted and was morethan happy to help. He located the potential Mexicanbuyer and informed him that the horse was ineligible forslaughter due to the administration of Phenylbutazone,a medication that is banned for use in animals intendedfor human consumption. We were told that if the horsearrived at Eagle Pass, he would be stopped at the bor-der. At that point, it appeared to be smooth sailing. When the truck arrived from Louisiana at Eagle PassFriday night, the horses were put into holding pens, where they were looked after until Monday morning. We still did not have confidence that the horse wasactually at Eagle Pass. Monday morning arrived, and thebroker offered to return the horse to his facility in Loui-siana, but I declined, having more confidence with myconnections in Texas.

    Cont. from p5

Monday at 10 a.m., the set-up time for confirmationof the horse's presence, came and went; the horsecould not be found. At 1 p.m., the horse still could notbe found. Another phone call to the veterinarian as wellas the Louisiana broker resulted in the horse finallybeing located. Tuesday morning, the horse was picked up. Again, not a simple task--evidently, Eagle Pass is not a placemany people visit. Luckily, a friend who recently relo-cated to Texas was contacted and was able to organizethe horse=s safe transportation. Although he is ex-hausted, he is resting comfortably at her father's farmawaiting a trip to Florida, where he will receive a well-earned rehabilitation period and then placement with aloving home--a happy ending for him and a huge thankyou to all who were involved. Although we tend not to let ourselves think of thefate of many of these animals or assume that many justdon't care, all of those I contacted were more thancooperative and happy to locate and return this horse. My calls to the brokers involved were never unan-swered and were handled professionally. Had we not had the time, a great support group (over17 people helped to locate this horse Friday), and atenacious nature, the reality is this horse would now bein a Mexican slaughterhouse. Most people wanting tohelp don't have the resources. At present, there is nosystem or database of contacts set up to help peoplewith the task. Why is there not a simple system inplace that would identify these ex-racehorses at thefinal border crossing where they are tagged for theirfinal destination? As breeders, owners, buyers andsellers, we need to be responsible for these horses thatwe all profit from in so many ways. Another lesson learned was: know your horse. Keepcopies of papers or photos to identify them. Lot 614was culled from a holding pen, where he was one ofeight bay geldings, because of photos we had of him asa two-year-old showing a small white sock on his rightfront. This was then confirmed by his tattoo. Lot 614 is actually sound and in pretty good condi-tion which, in some ways, breaks my heart even more. When trainers hear about our program, they arehappy to send the horses home to us. In fact, we haveanother one coming to us this weekend. We contactedthe trainer and, after a poor performance in his laststart this week, the owner and trainer are sending himhome! It is encouraging to see Gov. Beshear launch theKentucky Equine Health and Welfare Council. This couldbe used to create an important database for all groupsinvolved in equine rescue and rehabilitation and theirrelevant contact information. TEAM means Together Everyone Achieves More!

The first open two-year-old maiden race in New Yorkthis year yielded a result unsurprising to anyone whohas followed the circuit over the past several years. BailOut the Cat (Tale ofthe Cat), a 4-5 firsterfrom trainer RickViolette, took the leadearly and kicked clearlate to win by 2 1/4lengths. Violette hasbeen on a roll withjuvenile debuters inthe Empire State, sporting a 32-percentwin rate with thosetypes over the pastthree seasons. While Violette=s achievements are apparent to anyonewho looks at a copy of the Daily Racing Form, thesuccess of the start-up sales and breeding operationCrossRoads Sales may not be quite as well-known,although it is just as noteworthy. Bail Out the Cat cont.

CrossRoads, the enterprise of Greg and Beth Burchell, offered Bail Out the Cat at KEENOV 2008. The coltRNA=d at $45,000, but did better in a return to the ringat FTKJUL eight months later. A[Bail Out the Cat] actually went through the Novem-ber sale as a weanling@ Burchell recalled. AHe wasn=t bigenough, and we didn=t get what we felt was a fair pricefor him, so the Littles decided to keep him until he wasa yearling.@ Patience paid off, and the $45,000 RNA weanlingreturned $70,000 at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky the follow-ing July. AHe was an easy horse to sell. He had a big walk onhim and generated a lot of interest. At the time, themare didn=t have a whole lot going on. Her producerecord was just alright. Otherwise, that colt would havebrought more money,@ Burchell said. ABut, Tale of theCat was doing really well at the time, so that was thereason he sold as well as he did.@ AI started in the Thoroughbred business as a kid,@explained Greg Burchell, who left the backstretch towork as a yearling manager for bloodstock power-

houses Taylor Made, FrankStronach=s Adena SpringsSouth and the late SheikhMaktoum bin Rashid alMaktoum=s GainsboroughFarm. AI grew up here inLexington and my dad trainedhorses. [Trainer] KiaranMcLaughlin and I were bestfriends growing up and weboth went to work for my

dad at the same time. I spent 13 or 14 years on theracetrack. I=ve done everything that you could do on thetrack. I still work the starting gate at the Derby andBreeders= Cup when it=s at Churchill Downs,@ he added. After a long stint at Adena Springs, Burchell decidedto go out on his own in 2005 with encouragement andfinancial support from Taylor Made and McLaughlin.Ironically, it was McLaughlin who sent out the horsethat Bail Out the Cat battled into submission yesterday. AMr. Stronach was good to me, as was SheikhMaktoum, but I always wanted to come back to Ken-tucky,@ said Burchell. ASo, after seven years in Florida,my wife Beth and I decided to come on back home andopen our own farm. After a year doing that--we=re inthe breeding business too and we raise a lot of babies--we decided to start a sales consignment, primarily tosell our own horses, but also for other clients.@ Bail Out the Cat was one of the horses the Burchellssold for their clients, Dr. and Mrs. John Little. TheLittles, who also bred multiple Grade III-placed and2010 GI Preakness S. participant Schoolyard Dreams(Stephen Got Even).

Nick DeMeric, who bought the horse in 2008, resoldhim at the OBSFEB two-year-old sale for $150,000. CrossRoads has not been immune to the currentmarket downturn despite sales graduates like thosebred by the Littles and stakes winners such as Fitz JustRight (Seattle Fitz {Arg}), Uno Mas (Macho Uno) andRed Lead (Red Bullet). The Burchells brought a 52-horse consignment toKeeneland September 2007, andhad 62 at the sale in 2008. Theoperation was hit by the reces-sion last year, however, and hadjust 28 yearlings at KEESEP2009. Burchell anticipates hav-ing only 10 yearlings in the salethis fall. AFor whatever reason, theSeptember sale at Keenelandhas been hit particularly hard, but you=ll see a drop-offacross-the board,@ explained Burchell. AIf you look at thenumber of registered foals this year, you will see muchlower numbers. People haven=t even bothered to breedto their mares, because they can=t afford to pay thestud fees.@ He added, AThe biggest problem we have had is justwith numbers in general. Last year we had about 80mares run through our farm. We have a lot of peoplethat send us mares from New York, Kentucky or Floridato breed here in Kentucky and then we send the maresback home. This year, we=re down to about 45...A lotof people are just waiting to see which way things aregoing to go.@ -Brian DiDonato
