Words to Know

El fútbol by Sandra Fernández

Build BackgroundRead the title to the children and talk with them about the cover photo. Ask what the children in the photo are doing. Encourage children to use their knowledge of soccer to think about the book. Ask questions such as the following: ¿Alguna vez jugaron o vieron un partido de fútbol? ¿Qué fue lo que más les gustó de este deporte?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Explain important text features, such as the use of labels to identify certain objects in a photo. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that this book is about the game of soccer and how to play it.Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. ¿Qué pasa en cada foto? Muchas personas juegan al fútbol. Digan personas. Busquen la palabra personas en la primera oración y señálenla con el dedo. ¿Por qué creen que a tantas personas les encanta el fútbol? ¿Por qué creen que es un deporte tan popular en todo el mundo? ¿Dónde han jugado al fútbol?

Page 3: Vayan a la página 3. ¿Ven el balón y las espinilleras? Ahora, lean los rótulos. Los rótulos sirven para entender palabras e ilustraciones. ¿En qué se diferencian un balón de fútbol y uno de básquetbol?

Page 4: Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them read. ¿Dónde juegan los jugadores de fútbol? Juegan en un lugar abierto que se llama campo. Señalen el campo de fútbol de esta foto. Ahora, señalen a los jugadores. ¿Dónde están las personas que miran el partido de fútbol?

Page 5: En esta fotografía, el jugador de fútbol está moviendo el balón en el campo. ¿Qué está usando, los pies o las manos?

Ahora vuelvan al comienzo para descubrir más cosas sobre el fútbol.

Words to KnowHave children turn to the Palabras que quiero saber at the back of the book. Read each word aloud and then together. Explain any unknown words. Tell children to look for these words as they read.

Choices for SupportConcepts of PrintChildren should understand that they say one word for one group of letters when they read.

Phonemic Awareness and Word WorkProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:

• Words with Consonant Clusters Materials: index cards, box. Write the following words from the book on index cards: protegerán, trabajo, árbitro, regla. Put the words in a box. Ask children to choose an index card and read the word. Write the word on the board. Help children identify and circle the consonant cluster in each word. Work with children to use the cluster in the beginning of a new word. (problema, prestar; traer, trabar; globo, glotón.)

• Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book: algunos, espinilleras, equipos, portero, trabajo, jugadores, tarjeta. Have them clap on each syllable: al-gu-nos, es-pi-ni-lle-ras, e-qui-pos, por-te-ro, tra-ba-jo, ju-ga-do-res, tar-je-ta.

(Possible suggestions: Para jugar al básquetbol, necesitamos una red; una pelota; equipos; unos tenis.)

After children have suggested the sports words, read the list together, pointing to each word as you read. ¡Miren todo lo que necesitamos para practicar deportes!

Muchas personas juegan al fútbol.

Lo puedes jugar con tu hermano.

¡También con tu mamá o tu papá!

Si nunca jugaste, inténtalo.

¡Te va a encantar!

Necesitas un balón de fútbol para jugar este deporte.

Los zapatos de fútbol y las espinilleras te protegerán cuando

juegues.

Dos equipos juegan este deporte en un campo de fútbol.

El campo es un lugar abierto cubierto con césped.

Hay un arco en cada lado.

Mueves el balón por el campo con tus pies.

¡También puedes usar tu cabeza!
