FY16 Annual Report FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS The NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program awarded 92 unrestricted grants of $7,000 each to 98 artists with 5 collaborations, as well as naming 15 Finalists (who do not receive a grant but receive the same recognition and professional support) in the disciplines of Architecture/Environmental Structures/Design, Choreography, Music/ Sound, Photography, and Playwriting/ Screenwriting. This brings the total awarded through the program since 1985 to over $30 million. For a full list of Fellows, please visit the Fellows Page on our website. 2016 MURRAY REICH AWARD In 2016 NYFA created the Murray Reich Distinguished Artist Award to provide resources to established visual artists over 50 who have been chosen for artistic excellence. Chuck Ginnever and Jane Kaufman were the inaugural recipients. They each received an unrestricted cash award of $10,000. FISCAL SPONSORSHIPFiscal Sponsorship added 52 new projects and supported a current cohort of 600 artist projects and 75 emerging organizations in raising $4.34 million for projects taking place in 28 states within the US and 6 countries across the globe. These projects reached over 208,604 people through film screenings, performances, exhibitions, educational programs, and many other innovative and impactful events. NYFA LEARNINGNYFA Learning provided in person professional development support to 1,076 artists. This includes: 255 artists served through Doctor’s Hours one-on-one consultations for visual, performing and literary artists, which are offered throughout the year and provide artists with an opportunity to get focused advice on their work and careers from industry professionals; 139 artists served through the Artist As Entrepreneur Boot Camp, through which we provide intensive business training for artists in all disciplines; and 37 artists from 28 countries supported by the Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program, which provides one-on-one mentoring to help immigrant artists find community and career success in the US; additionally, a number of one-time workshops, panels, and presentations served a total of 645 artists.

ONLINE RESOURCESOur Online Resources reached an audience of1.2 million through our website, www.nyfa.org.NYFA Source provided access to a total of12,300 listings of ongoing opportunities, andresources for artists in all disciplines, andClassifieds posted a total of 9,307 listings ofone-time jobs, spaces and opportunities. We also engaged a growing audience through our social media channels, with 15% growth in our Twitter followers (24,301 total) and 7% increase of our Facebook audience (141,843 total). New in 2016 was our #ArtistHotline professional development initiative. Dedicated to creating an ongoing online conversation around the professional side of artistic practice, #ArtistHotline occurs on the third Wednesday of each month on Twitter, where artists are welcome to join a productive conversation about the business of art.

ARTS BUSINESS INCUBATOR PROGRAMIn FY16 our Arts Business Incubator Program provided 7 start-up arts enterprises with comprehensive support to help them achieve sustainability, including mentorship, financial support, and access to experts in legal services and advice, financial and strategic planning, marketing and outreach assistance. This program was founded in FY15 and receives support from the Scherman Foundation’s Axel G. and Katharine S. Rosin Fund. Through an introduction by Michael Spalter, Chairman of RISD, in FY16 we participated in the IBM Design Thinking Workshop at IBM’s headquarters in Manhattan. With the help of IBM facilitators, NYFA staff, board members, and artists worked together to further advance the reach and scope of the Arts Business Incubator Program. We would like to thank everyone at IBM, including Phil Gilbert and Joni Saylor of IBM Design, for their generosity and support.

HALL OF FAME BENEFITAt our Hall of Fame Benefit we honor artistsand patrons of the arts who, through theircareer-long sustenance of artistic vision anduncompromising integrity, represent the bestthat NYFA has to offer. In 2016 we honoredJames Casebere, Anna Deavere Smith, FaithRinggold, and Zhou Long.

CURATORIAL PROJECTSCuratorial Projects provided 229 artists with opportunities to present their work through exhibitions, readings and performances across New York City, including the offices of McKinsey and Co., IFP Made in NY Media Arts Center, Housing Works, Bene Rialto, and Westbeth Gallery. These events reached an estimated audience of 7,500 and provided an opportunity for our diverse audiences to connect and expand their communities.
