Introduction
The percentage of population living in cities is in-
creasing. In order to prevent this overall trend from
restricting in any way the well-being and quality of
life of the citizens, several projects have been devel-
oped. Subjects such as mobility, information and
communication technologies, environment and
safety are developed with the aim of finding solu-
tions that improve the daily life of the population.
2013 was the year of the official launching of the
Center of Competence for Future
Cities of the University of
Porto. Characterized
by multidisciplinar-
ity and involving
different teams
and research works
from the faculties
of the University of
Porto, the objective of
the Center of Competence
for Future Cities is to promote the development
of consortia of research groups, government
agencies, companies and communities of end
users in relevant areas to the future cities, such
as information and communication technologies,
sustainable mobility, urban environments manage-
ment or security and privacy.
The Center of Competence started its full opera-
tion with the implementation of the Future Cities
Project, funded by the European Commission (FP7).
Several other projects have, however, been imple-
mented by members of the Center of Competence.

disciplinaridade e englobando diferentes equipas
e trabalhos de investigação das faculdades da
U.Porto, o objetivo do Centro de Competências
é promover a formação de consórcios de grupos
de investigação, organismos públicos, empresas e
comunidades de utilizadores
finais em áreas relevan-
tes para as cidades do
futuro, tais como
tecnologias de in-

base. O modelo proposto pelo
Future Cities pretende dotar a
cidade de um largo conjunto de
equipamentos de sensorização e
comunicação.
O trabalho, desenvolvido em
parceria com um vasto leque de
empresas, universidades e insti-
tuições, está a criar as condições
para que se desenvolvam proje-
tos de investigação e desenvolvi-
mento utilizando tecnologias
avançadas de recolha de dados
através de plataformas móveis,
comunicação wireless e proces-
samento de informação em larga
escala.
Pretende-se com este projeto
contribuir para o desenvolvimen-
to em áreas como a mobilidade,
segurança e qualidade de vida
dos cidadãos.
A dimensão média da cidade e a
multimodalidade de transportes
são algumas das características
que tornam o Porto uma cidade
ideal para acolher este modelo
de desenvolvimento.
Cerca de um ano após o arran-
que do Centro de Competên-
cias e do projeto Future Cities,
fazemos um balanço do trabalho
desenvolvido, no terreno, por
uma equipa multidisciplinar.

CidadessustentáveisAlguns temas como mobilidade sustentável, saúde e sensoriza-
ção constituem o foco de projetos e investigações desenvolvidos
no âmbito das cidades do futuro. O projeto Future Cities é um
desses exemplos.

As
ver melhor a importância do tema.

“Transportation is the main promoter of accessibility - for
people and goods – and it is a key factor in the development of
social and economic cohesion between regions and countries.
Through mobility and accessibility, transport contributes to so-
ciety’s quality of life and particularly the citizen’s”. Those words
are Jorge Freire de Sousa’s, professor at the Faculty of Engineer-
ing of the University of Porto, and they could not describe the
importance of the theme any better.
Aware that in the future the world’s population will increas-
ingly live in cities, Jorge Freire Sousa highlights three crucial
elements when it comes to transportation systems: urban mo-
bility, transportation of goods and interfaces between means of
transport. “Together, these elements must be able to provide an
integrated transportation system to serve the demand for trans-
port of more than 80 percent of the world population”, explains
the professor. To Jorge Freire de Sousa, the research on this
subject should be able to “effectively deal with a problem and
simultaneously be efficient in providing benefits to today’s four
pillars that represent the four main objectives of a social nature
in the area of Transportation”. They are the Environment and

“Projects
such as Future Cities have the capability to develop and use basic
tools, the urban scale, to help researchers and companies
to overcome the gap between theory and practice in the context of urban planning
and transport”Jorge Freire
de Sousa
“Projetos
anos havendo, no entanto, sempre aspetos a melhorar. Apesar
clui. Um dos principais
problemas das cidades
decorre da “rapidez
com que as mesmas se
transformam”. É por
esta razão que as “novas
formas e funções urbanas
têm que contribuir para a re-
dução das viagens ocasionais em
transporte individual”. Para alcançar-
mos cidades sustentáveis as apostas devem estar relacio-
agradáveis, seguras e eficientes”, remata o docente.
Transportation Systems and Safety and the Social and Econom-
ic Challenges of Transport.
According to the expert, the transport network of the Metro-
politan Area of Porto has been the subject of several develop-
ments in recent years; however, there are always aspects to be
improved. Although he stresses that there is not “a miracle
and universal solution to create the sustainable city”, Jorge
Freire Sousa admits that the “great motivation must take into
account that citizens seek mobility and not transport”. “Min-
imizing the costs of the citizens’ mobility requires the coordi-
nation of research in the areas of planning and transport”, he
concludes. One of the main problems of cities results from
the “rapidity with which they transform themselves”. It is for
this reason that the “new urban forms and functions have to
contribute to the reduction of occasional travel in private
transport”. To achieve sustainable cities, investments must
be related to the “automobile intervention, to ensure better
environmental conditions for its circulation; planning of
operational procedures of electric vehicles and bicycles; im-
provement of sharing vehicles systems;
optimization of logistic activities
and development of public
transport, giving them
priority”.
Although “no project is
able to make a differ-
ence by itself ”, Jorge
Freire Sousa believes
that projects such as
Future Cities have “the
ability to develop and use
basic tools, in an urban scale, to
help researchers and companies to
overcome the gap between theory and practice in the context
of urban and transport planning”. “It is expected that the
implemented test beds are able to provide with meta-data that
are transformed into useful information and to develop tech-
nologies, products and services to make the cities safer, more
pleasant and efficient”, concludes the professor.

Veículos em rede
“A comunicação entre veículos vai revolucionar as comunica-
ções atuais”. Susana Sargento, docente da Universidade de
Aveiro e investigadora no projeto Future Cities e no Instituto
de Telecomunicações, não podia ser mais categórica. Dedicada
“A possibilidade
de ligar veículos e pessoas, e toda
a informação sensorial associada,
também irá permitir que toda
esta informação possa ser usada
para melhorar a eficiência da
cidade a nível dos transportes,
serviços e energia”, garante a
docente. É neste sentido que
está a ser desenvolvido o traba-
lho de ligação veicular. “A nossa
“completamente ‘ligadas’”.
Networked Vehicles“Communication between vehicles will revolutionize the current
communications.” Susana Sargento, professor at the Univer-
sity of Aveiro and researcher at the Future Cities project and at
the Instituto de Telecomunicações, could not be more categor-
ical. Dedicated to the development of research and projects on
networked vehicles, the professor is very clear regarding this
issue: “Users will have a hotspot in their own vehicles, allowing
them to have the same kind of Internet access they currently
have at home or at work,” she says. Through mobile devices,
cars can communicate with each other and form a vehicular
network, reinforcing new ways of Wi-Fi access, collecting data
about the city and facilitating road traffic, among many other
applications.
But these aren’t the only advantages. “The ability to connect
people and vehicles, and all associated sensory information,
will also allow all this information to be used to improve
the efficiency of the city in terms of transport, services and
energy,” says the professor. It is in this sense that the work on
vehicular connection is being developed. “Our platform is
unique worldwide and it has allowed us to explore the many
challenges we have encountered”, concludes.
The route is not always linear and there are often many ob-
stacles like the fact that it is “a very recent
technology which only now is being
put into practice, in spite of the
existing amount of research on
it in terms of concept.” Susana
Sargento ensures that “beyond
the technical challenges inher-
ent to having a large network,
it is now very important to work
on the services and applications
that this technology brings us.” And in
which direction is this work being developed?
“To improve road traffic in cities, and reduce the consumption
of fuel and energy” are just a few examples provided by the
researcher who idealizes the future cities “totally ‘connected’.”

percorrer.
Michel Ferreira, docente da Faculdade de Ciências da Universi-
dade do Porto, investigador no projeto Future Cities e respon-
cidades do futuro: a segurança.
for parking)”.
A tecnologia surge aliada a
Mobility A lot has been made regarding mobility and information and
communication technologies. Communication between vehi-
cles, networking and real-time data transmission are already a
reality, but there is still a long way to go.
Michel Ferreira, professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the
University of Porto, researcher at the Future Cities project
and responsible for the I-CITY Future Mobility project, has
dedicated himself to the development of studies and projects
on mobility. To the professor, we are experiencing a “major
revolution” which meets another privileged concept concern-
ing the cities of the future: safety. For Michel Ferreira, some
projects are “essential proofs of concept because they allow us
to envision the future of these paradigms of mobility.” Along
with the issue of connectivity, the autonomous vehicles will
also change the urban scenery. The professor admits that this
will be an “enormous change” since “it reduces time of travel
and the time spent looking for a parking place (cruising for
parking).” “The main revolution associated with autonomous
vehicles does not happen during the trip, but when the journey
ends,” for the autonomous vehicle leaves the driver at the door
of his/her house or work and it will park itself, reducing the
time of circulation in search of parking.
Developed within the framework of mobility, these projects
are characterized by multidisciplinarity. The technology comes
together with other areas such as psychology, public policy or
civil engineering, for example, in the construction of car parks
or in the management of public roads. Michel Ferreira admits
that there is a lot of change in terms of mobility but it will not
stop here. “These projects are essential to have a sense of how
everything evolves, but there is still much to be done.”
The I-CITY Future Mobility project, funded by QREN, intends
to continue this theme with the implementation of test plat-
forms in Porto.

bem-estar”. Docente da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universi-
dade do Porto e investigador no INESC TEC e no projeto Future
Health and well-being
Health and well-being are issues of global importance and
therefore also covered by the projects developed by the Center
of Competence for Future Cities of the University of Porto.
The measurement and control of the physiology of the popula-
tion are of particular importance since “even if people are not
suffering from any disease, monitoring their physiology, like
for example their activity, allows a better management of their
well-being”. As a professor at the Faculty of Engineering of
the University of Porto and a researcher at INESC TEC and the
Future Cities project, João Paulo Cunha has been working in
the vital sensing of first responder professionals but he admits
that the intention is that the concept “evolves so that any citi-
zen can use this type of service”. That being the case, “we will
have many scenarios”, the professor highlights, as “measuring
the number of steps taken per day in the case of a citizen who
wants to lose weight”. This is just a small example of the impli-
cations of what João Paulo Cunha called “quantified self ” (moni-
toring of physiology) may have in the city. But this individual
monitoring can take on another dimension if citizens share
their data and, in that case, “we enter the crowdsensing or vital
crowdsensing, in other words, the sharing of vital variables in
order to have a way of performing vital crowdsensing in the

e I-CITY Future Health, o grande objetivo “é conseguirmos
do Vital Jacket.
Melhora-
mos os hábitos de saúde”. Prevenção é, portanto, a palavra-chave.
Sandra Mattos, consultora do I-City Future Health e cardio-
city”. “The simple information about where people run or do
not run can be important, for example, to deliberate on the
creation of some infrastructure”, he adds. To
Miguel Coimbra, professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the Uni-
versity of Porto and researcher in the Future Cities and I-CITY
Future Health projects, the big goal “is to be able to think how
the monitoring of health in the future will be like”.
Currently, health records are made on an occasional basis in a
hospital or health institution, and performed by a professional.
In the future, according to the perspective of Miguel Coimbra,
“the idea is to cluster everything in a single electronic register,
in other words, to put together the ongoing health monitoring
performed by the population itself with sensors, to the existing
occasional monitoring in hospitals”. The use of sensors in
people enables a continuous collection of information comple-
mentary to the one collected in the hospital environment, and it
is expected to improve the detection and tracking of diseases in
the inhabitants of the cities of the future.
There are already developed technologies in this area, namely
“forms of monitoring an electrocardiogram, such as Vital Jacket.
What is missing? Several things are. A key one is an electronic,
standard, normalized and secure register that saves all the in-
formation in an interesting way”, explains the researcher. There
are other obstacles, such as data transmission spending a lot of
battery of smart phones, which is currently being worked on. It
is precisely this topic that Ricardo Sousa, a postdoc researcher,
has been developing through the creation of a more robust
algorithm that increases battery life. “It is possible to transmit
the same amount of data with less bandwidth, which means
that it consumes less battery”, explains Ricardo Sousa, high-
lighting that these systems “make communication a lot easier.”
Miguel Coimbra adds that “the only way to increase longevity
without dramatically increasing health care costs is to prevent
people from getting sick. How do we avoid that? Improving
health habits”. Prevention is, therefore, the keyword. Projects
such as the I- CITY Future Health “allow us to characterize hab-
its, to continuously monitor and identify people with good or
bad habits, and predict, with greater or lesser ease when some-
one should go to the hospital”. “Most diseases, when detected
soon enough, are inexpensive to treat and modify, and they
have an excellent prognosis. However, when they are detected
later, they require hospitalization and they cannot be treated
with the same effectiveness, adds Miguel Coimbra.
Sandra Mattos, consultant to the I-CITY Future Health and
pediatric cardiologist, leads one of the largest telemedicine pro-
jects in the context of neonatal screening in the largest hospital
in northeastern Brazil, the Real Hospital Português. According
13

to the expert, “heart disease is the biggest health problem we
have today”. “Any work created to monitor cardiovascular
parameters is extremely important because it is probably the
key point of prevention”, says the consultant. She believes that
if through this combination of data she receives a clinical case
sooner, it may not be possible to prevent the problem, but it
is possible to prevent its complications. “When someone has
a problem at the park, on the street, anywhere, we can know
where the person is, what is wrong with him or her, what
needs to be done. Future Health is here for that”, concludes
the cardiologist. Ricardo Correia, a professor at the Faculty of
Medicine of the University Porto and a researcher on this pro-
ject, alerts: “When we talk about this data exchange process, we
are speaking of very sensitive information; therefore, the issue
of confidentiality is very important. Thus, one of our tasks is
to ensure that only the person providing the care has access to
that information”, he confirms.
At this stage, the I-CITY Future Health, project funded by
QREN, is more directed to cardiology. However, the project
covers a different axis, physiotherapy, led by Veronica Orvalho.
dicina no âmbito do rastreio neonatal no maior hospital do
nordeste brasileiro, o Real Hospital Português. De acordo com
a especialista, “a doença cardíaca é o maior problema de saúde
pública que temos nos dias de hoje”. “Qualquer trabalho no sen-
tido de monitorizar parâmetros cardiovasculares é de extrema
importância pois é, provavelmente, o ponto fundamental da
prevenção”, adianta a consultora.
prevenir as complicações.

implementada no âmbito do projeto Future Cities.
A recolha e
SenseMyCity is the name of a testbed
platform implemented within the Future
Cities project. This platform involves the development of
a homonymous application for smart phones.
Through sensors, the SenseMyCity application allows the reg-
ister of the daily routine of users for further analysis, including
fuel consumption per trip, the possibility of car sharing or
stress levels. With this application, designed for use in research
projects in various areas such as smart mobility and psychol-
ogy, users can record their routines knowingly and voluntarily.
Recently completed, the SenseMyCity is being tested and the
next project in which it will be used will be with the police, for
the analysis of the professionals’ well-being.
The process is simple. The user records his/her routine through
embedded sensors on his/her smart phone and then he/she
views it on a web page created for that purpose. The collection
and analysis of such data (algorithms) can lead to some conclu-
sions regarding the consumption of fuel per trip, the identi-
fication of areas with slower traffic, places or situations that
increase the stress levels of drivers, among others. The same
analysis can be used to optimize routes and consumption. For
example, by using SenseMyCity, it is possible to identify people
with similar mobility patterns (boosting car sharing and car
pooling) and to map the inclination angles of city streets so as
to suggest bike routes with little inclination and flat ground.
This application can also be used in the analysis of data
gathered from multiple users (crowdsensing), enabling
longitudinal studies of occupational stress that are part of
questionnaires and vital sensors and which can be applied to
firefighters, bus drivers or police officers.
The SenseMyCity application was developed within the Future
Cities project to be used in the investigation of algorithms that
allow the processing of geo-indexed data from telecommuni-
cations and psychology (analysis of stress levels). It was created
to work together with other data collection projects, and not
on its own, and there will always be a conscious and voluntary
aspect by the user.

Ana Aguiarna primeira pessoa in the first person
projectos recolhendo dados, usando equipamentos e serviços,
A grande vantagem será o facto
desenvolver e testar ideias conjuntas, preparando melhor proje-
o projeto e o Porto Living Lab”, remata Ana Aguiar.
The SenseMyCity application was developed by a workgroup led
by Ana Aguiar under the Future Cities project. For the professor
and researcher, this project “encourages the development of
collaborations between researchers from different institutions
within the University of Porto and with partner institutions of
international excellence”.
According to the professor, the Future Cities project covering
SenseMyCity application is very “focused on experiments in-
volving end users, i.e. people involved in the projects collecting
data, using equipment and services, reporting their experi-
ences for us to improve and giving us new ideas about other
services”. The great advantage is the fact that these same people
have the opportunity to “experience technologies that are not
yet available in the market, to better understand some aspects
of their own lives, the city and technology, and to influence
future developments”. Here, several technological and scientific
problems come up, but Ana Aguiar ensures that it is possible
to create a “problems-solutions-experiments-new problems
cycle that contributes towards the scientific progress and the
development of people’s quality of life”.
“It is an incredible asset to the University of Porto and to the
researchers involved because it allows us to define and build ex-
perimental infrastructures for joint experiments with freedom,
not being restricted to a specific plan of activities, but only to
guides on the topics towards which the research results will be
applied, i.e., to the scenarios that must be worked”, she adds.
To the researcher, this type of consortium allows, first, to devel-
op and test joint ideas, allowing a better preparation for future
projects; and, secondly, to offer international partners not only
ideas, but pilot tests in living laboratories, so that they can be
experienced.
According to the professor, the aim is also to “conduct interdis-
ciplinary studies in psychology, sociology, and geography in the
area of Intelligent Mobility”, always aiming to a better under-
standing of the city and its inhabitants. “We are working with
European partners to internationalize the project and the Porto
Living Lab “, concludes Ana Aguiar.
The SenseMyCity platform is an evolution of what was devel-
oped in the MISC project, at the first stage of the MIT | Portugal
partnership.

imagem, ruído, qualidade do ar, meteorológicos, etc.
As
Vão ser utilizadas ligações machine to machine.
big data. Uma das vantagens é a vasta experiência e know how da
equipa do projeto Future Cities.
UrbanSense is a platform that is being implemented in the city
of Porto in order to collect data, enabling the development of
future research projects in areas such as psychology, spatial
planning and environment, among others.
This platform is being developed at an urban scale, using differ-
ent types of sensors, fixed and mobile, registering image, noise,
air quality, weather, etc. Fixed sensors are distributed through-
out downtown Porto allowing the collection, and after that the
correlation of data such as the number of people or vehicles,
levels of pollution, noise, radiation or air quality. On the other
hand, mobile sensors installed on buses allow the gathering of
information from some areas where otherwise it would not be
possible.
The various sensors will work in an interconnected manner.
Video cameras will not collect images continuously but they
will count people and vehicles. The video capture may be trig-
gered by the detection of an unusual event (e.g., increased num-
ber of people, a large amount of carbon dioxide, etc.). Apart
from the interconnection between sensors, UrbanSense intends
to take advantage of other testbeds already implemented, such
as the Vehicular Testbed Network (VANET), which it will use to
access the internet. Machine-to-machine connections will be
used. The location of the fixed sensor was set to, in a first stage,
connect the sensors to the VANET testbed using its Road Side
Units (RSU). After that, other locations using opportunistic
connections with vehicles passing nearby will be used.
A major challenge for UrbanSense is data analysis, since the
amounts of collected information are huge and they require
knowledge in areas such as signal and imaging processing,
pattern recognition, data mining and big data. One of the
advantages is the vast experience and know-how of the Future
Cities project’s team.

Daniel Moura Tânia Calçada
na primeira pessoa in the first person
determinados problemas.
“Multidisciplinarity” and “team dynamics” are the concepts
which Tânia Calçada and Daniel Moura use to define the Future
Cities project. The two senior researchers are responsible for
the UrbanSense platform and face the challenge with enthu-
siasm because the results may translate into actual changes in
the city and hence the quality of life of citizens. “There is a very
important aspect that goes beyond the technical and scientif-
ic research questions: that is the impact on citizens”, noted
Daniel Moura, adding that “important investigations that may
result in amendments to Porto City Hall can be developed, such
as the requalification of areas that are too hot or windy. These
“discoveries” can act as alerts for organizations, leading them to
fix certain problems. Daniel Moura goes further and explains
that in the future the use of all these sensors “can even help
detect occurrences that help to alert authorities in a timely
manner”, such as the detection of a fire, a flood or in case there
is a medical emergency”.
UrbanSense is a testbed being implemented in the city of Porto,
and it consists of collecting data through various sensors of
different nature (sound, image, temperature, etc.). If we want
to make a kind of distribution of the work developed on this

peratura, etc.). Se quisermos fazer uma espécie de distribuição
do trabalho desenvolvido nesta plataforma, podemos dizer
Para além do know how da equipa do Future Cities, Tânia Cal-
Tânia Calçada valoriza no projeto Future Cities.
empresas.
platform, we can say “that Tânia got the part of the environ-
mental sensors and I [Daniel] have the cameras, because this is
related to my field of research”, concludes the researcher.
Beyond the expertise of the Future Cities’ team, Tânia Calçada
and Daniel Moura benefit from the interest and involvement of
masters and doctorate students because UrbanSense involves
several areas of study as “signal and image processing, pattern
recognition, data mining, big data, hardware programming
and wireless networking”, the researchers say. It is this con-
nection and sharing of knowledge that Tânia Calçada values
in the Future Cities project. “When people of several areas are
interconnected, the fruits are necessarily good because there is
an exchange of knowledge and that is very positive”, she adds.
Daniel Moura also highlights the dynamics of the team, which
he refers to as “spectacular” when it comes to “involving not
only the local authority as a representative of the citizens, and
of the city, but also companies that provide public services
such as STCP, because much of the work that is being done is
intended to benefit the users”.
The researchers also add the importance of projects of this
nature which allow innovation to the evolution of startups in
the area of Information and Communication Technologies. In
addition to opening doors for researchers, projects like Future
Cities lead to development and growth of new companies.

João Barros
“Os
fomentar o desenvolvimento
de tecnologias, produtos e
serviços, de modo a tornar
as cidades mais agradáveis,
seguras e eficientes. A
comunicação veículo-a-
veículo, em tempo real,
permite a recolha e aná-
oferecer acesso Wi-Fi aos passageiros e obter dados a partir
da unidade OBD2 para a nuvem. Neste momento, grandes
These “boxes” that allow vehicle-to-vehicle communication are
devices equipped with sensors and wireless interfaces. They
operate in a network and share information, e.g. about traffic
or tourist places to visit.
This project, developed at an urban scale and in partnership
with various organizations and companies, aims to increase
the development of technologies, products, and services in
order to make cities safer, more pleasant and efficient. The
vehicle to vehicle communication in real time allows the
collection and analysis of data that may result in the opti-
mization of routes or have any relevant consequences in
terms of energy and environmental consumption, road
management and public transport networks.
VANET is being implemented in two ways. On the one
hand, the project has been using 802.11p
technology on trucks operat-
ing at the Port of Leixões
and moving regularly
between containers.
On the other hand,
hundreds of vehicles
including buses in
the city of Porto are
already equipped, and
they have communica-
tion and data processing
skills.
The objectives are multiple,
including measuring the connectivity from vehicle to vehicle,
finding Wi-Fi hotspots in Porto, offering Wi-Fi access to pas-
sengers and retrieving data from the OBD2 drive to the cloud.
At this point, large amounts of data are already being collected.
Based on this information which can measure and evaluate the
inter-vehicular communication, researchers are developing
experiments to make the best use out of this resource, such
as internet access and amplifying the coverage of wireless
network.

no âmbito do projeto Future Cities: a Vehicular Ad-hoc Network
(VANET).
ponta e envolve várias empresas e startups, representa uma
acrescenta a docente.
Coordinator of the Center of Competence for Future Cities of
the University of Porto, João Barros is also one of the respon-
sibles for one of the testbeds implemented under the Future
Cities project: The Vehicular Ad- hoc Network (VANET).
“The implementation of this platform, which uses the latest
technology and involves several companies and startups, re-
presents a significant change in terms of mobility.” João Barros
adds that “route optimization for buses, saving energy, and
reducing the drivers’ stress levels are some of the direct conse-
quences that may result from projects of this kind.”
Susana Sargento, professor at the University of Aveiro and re-
searcher at the Future Cities project and at the Instituto de Tele-
comunicações, explains that this vehicle platform “is unique in
the world and has allowed us to explore the many challenges we
have encountered.” “The ability to connect people and vehicles,
and all associated sensory information, will also allow all this
information to be used to improve the efficiency of the city in
terms of transport, services and energy”, adds the professor.
“Right now we are collecting data that will allow many studies
to be developed and to create technological solutions that sim-
plify and facilitate the daily life of citizens”, says João Barros.
It is this proximity between the various partners that leads to
the existence of a large, dynamic ecosystem, representing one
of the assets of projects such as Future Cities. An environment
in which “companies, universities, young and senior entrepre-
neurs collaborate in order to find solutions to various problems
that may lead to the creation of products, services, jobs.”
“The Center of Competence aims precisely to catalyze the
formation of an ecosystem connected to issues that pose many
challenges to urban centers in which we live.” So what we try
to do is “to form consortia between companies and universities
that allow us to deal with these problems in a very practical
way”, concludes the Coordinator of the Center of Competence.

Veniam, and Ubiwhere. Among 27 exhibitors, the Future Cities
Project’s stand received the second prize for “stand demonstra-
tion”.
The presence at the event also aimed to promote interaction
among the more than 300 participants and to collect valid
suggestions and ideas for research that could be implemented
within the project.
The Future Network and Mobile Summit 2013 was held in
Lisbon, Portugal, from 3rd to 5th July 2013. This was the
twenty-second in a series of annual conferences promoted by
the European Commission, which welcomes researchers and
industry representatives to share experiences and research
results, to discuss business opportunities, and identify trends
and opportunities for international collaboration under FP7
-ICT and Horizon 2020.
Workshop: “Large-scale Sensig for Future Cities”
About 50 participants attended the workshop on “Large-scale
Sensing for Future Cities”. The initiative took place on Decem-
ber 18th, 2013, at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of
Porto, and it allowed the sharing of experiences among profes-
sionals from different but complementary areas.
One of the goals of this workshop was to bring together a group
of people and collect opinions and contributions that could be
developed within the two testbeds that are being implemented
in the city of Porto (Future Cities Project) - SenseMyCity and
UrbanSense.
The assessment result was very positive. In addition to relevant
interventions by Portugal Telecom, ISA, Freedom Grow, Porto
City Council and Climate, Health and Environment Research
Group (CHERG), the workshop ended with a dynamic activity
that encouraged creativity and interaction among partici-
pants. The result was a list of dozens of ideas and suggestions
concerning the two platforms, always with the intention of
improving the quality of life and well-being of citizens.
The workshop on “Large-scale Sensing for Future Cities” was
the first of several thematic workshops organized within the
Future Cities Project. These initiatives are intended to foster
knowledge sharing, bring academia closer to the industry, and
also to get a better understanding of the needs of end users.
mentadas no âmbito do projeto.
A Future Network and Mobile Summit 2013 decorreu em
âmbito do FP7- ICT e Horizonte 2020.
Workshop: “Large-scale Sensig for Future Cities”
tema “Large-scale Sensing for Future Cities”. A iniciativa decor-
Future Cities) – SenseMyCity e UrbanSense.
O balanço foi muito positivo. Para além de intervenções
relevantes por parte da Portugal Telecom, ISA, Freedom Grow,
Câmara Municipal do Porto e do Climate, Health and Environ-
to do projeto Future Cities.
