1 in 6 of us
will be
affected by
mental illness
at some point
in our lives
Mental illness includes:
anxiety, depression, addiction,
obsession, phobias, eating disorders,
bipolar disorder, personality disorders,
schizophrenia, PTSD
Mental illness does not discriminate; it affects people of all ages, and from all walks of life.
Mental illness is the
leading cause of
disability, leading to
deep personal distress,
relationship difficulties,
and significant social
problems.
By 2030, DEPRESSION will be the world's most disabling condition,
above cancer, heart disease and AIDs.
There are over 6,000 suicides
each year in the UK, and approximately
140,000 more attempts in England
and Wales.
About mental health
In the UK, there are up to
10,000,000 people suffering from
mental health problems
at any one time.
The impact of mental
illness extends further
than the person who
experiences it; experts
estimate 6-10 more
people are affected.
The number of Britons on antidepressant drugs has almost doubled in the last 10 years

SANE is a national mental health charity whose vision has remained consistent throughout its thirty-year
history: to raise public awareness, excite research, and bring more effective professional treatment and
compassionate care to everyone affected by mental illness, in order to change mental health for good.
SANE achieves its goal of improving quality of life for anyone affected by mental illness through three
activities: emotional support, research, and education and awareness projects and campaigns. SANE is the
only mental health charity to combine these three activities.
About SANE
Providing free, confidential, emotional support and expert information
SANE provides free, confidential emotional support and expert guidance to people with mental illness, their
family, friends and carers. A team of eleven mental health professionals and a skilled volunteer force of 150
people run SANE services, providing 30,000 hours of emotional support each year.
Emotional support is accessible at any time, 365 days a year:
SANEline (telephone): 0300 304 7000 (4.30pm to 10.30pm 365 days a year)
Textcare (text): sane.org.uk/what_we_do/support/textcare/
Support Forum: sane.org.uk/what_we_do/support/supportforum/
Campaigning to raise awareness, combat stigma, and to improve mental health services
One of SANE’s aims is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.
The Black Dog Campaign seeks to normalise mental illness so that it’s
looked on like any physical health condition.
To bring the campaign to life we have designed visually striking Black Dog
statues. The physical presence of a Black Dog helps people to define
their experience of the ‘invisible’ condition, which characterises mental
illness, as well as promoting more open discussion, understanding and
acceptance.

Researching the causes and impact of mental illness to find better treatments and care programmes
Despite advances in science and medicine, the causes of mental illness and what
leads people to take their own life remains unknown. Psychosocial and
neuroscientific research plays a central role in SANE’s work; it informs how we
help people through our services, guides our campaigns and helps to ensure a
greater variety of effective treatments.

In 2014, money raised and donated by SANE supporters enabled over 500,000 people to receive free, confidential emotional support. Tom and Anne told us what this meant to them when they felt isolated, lonely and frightened.
c
£1,000 allows us to
invest in the ongoing
training and personal
development of one
SANE volunteer
through our in-house
specialist programme,
led by mental health
professionals. Over
the course of a year,
this volunteer will
support 575 people.
£500 means 60
people in desperate
need will receive
regular monthly
compassionate care
for a year.
£250 enables 30
vulnerable individuals
to receive essential
crisis support, expert
guidance and mental
health information.
£100 allows SANE
to reply to 12 emails
from people affected
by mental illness
seeking free,
confidential, personal
and emotional
support.
How you will make a difference
Anne
Tom
I received such an understanding and sympathetic reply, and it meant so much to me.
“Now I feel as though SANE and Black Dog Tribe are a network of wonderful people who
have either been through something similar, or want to help people who have, and just
knowing these people are there, is an enormous source of comfort, for someone like me,
who finds life a struggle at times.”
“I have bipolar disorder and last year, following a period
of mania, I had a psychotic episode and was detained
under a 28-day section in a psychiatric unit.
“When I came home I was so happy to be out of hospital,
but a few weeks later I was bed ridden with very painful
sciatica and had to have a cocktail of strong painkillers on
top of my psychiatric medication. I became severely
depressed and the awful thing was that I knew I had enough
diazepam to "end it all" if I wanted to.
“I had my computer by my bed and I decided to email
SANE. I poured my heart out in that email, about the
terrible police sectioning’s I had endured, about how I had a
seizure in hospital and almost died, about how lonely I was
and how much I missed the friends I had met on the ward.
“Aged 16, I was diagnosed with the mental health condition known as psychosis. For a
year I found myself lost in a cycle of worry and confusion with nowhere to go. That was
until I decided to seek help.
“The people on the phone were incredibly understanding and informed me that I was not
alone in experiencing these symptoms and that there were people out there that could
help me. To know that I wasn’t alone was a huge
relief and immediately there was a huge weight off
my shoulders.
“Today I am feeling better than ever. I was directed
to a local psychiatrist and I joined the early
intervention service. I am eternally grateful for the
work done by mental health charities like SANE. It is
the work of SANE and other mental health
organisations that started me on the road to recovery
and they can help you too.”

Fundraising Ideas: At work
Fundraising at work is a popular way to raise money and make the most of your working relationships.
Hold a mental health lunch: Get together with
colleagues during your lunch break to talk,
relax and brighten each other’s day. Each
person brings one dish, so everyone can get
together and share. Ask for a suggested
donation of £5 for lunch, and £5 to raise funds
for better mental health.
Have a dress down day: Pay £1 to wear casual
clothes, and £2 if you forget!
Hold a bake sale: Add some healthy
competition by asking your colleagues to vote
for the best cake!
Organise a social evening: A quiz, karaoke night or bachelor auction are always popular. Raise
funds through ticket, food and drink sales.
Start an office sweepstake: Who can go the longest without using your company buzz word?
Desk donations
Take a SANE collection box into work and pop it on your desk! Ask your colleagues to put their loose change
in. Every penny helps, and you’ll be surprised how much you can raise this way.
Matched funding
Some employers will match or part-match your fundraising total. You could potentially double all of your
fantastic funds for mental health! Ask your employer for more information.
Email signature
Change your email signature and raise awareness of what you are doing to support better mental health
amongst your colleagues, clients and suppliers.
Advertise your JustGiving page
Send an email to your colleagues with a link to
your JustGiving page. If your office permits, you
could even add a link to your JustGiving page to
your email signature, so that as many people as
possible are aware of your fantastic efforts.

Fundraising Ideas: General
In memory fundraising:
Losing someone close to us is devastating and extremely difficult to cope
with. Despite this, many brave people raise money in order to celebrate and
commemorate the life of a loved one.
JustGiving In Memory page
Through JustGiving, you can set up a page to raise money in memory of
somebody. There is a space to write about your fundraising, and the person
whose memory you are honouring. JustGiving also creates a space for others to share their memories and
messages of support when they make a donation.
Donations in lieu of flowers
Often people decide to make donations in lieu of flowers. Sometimes the funeral director can collect the
donations at the funeral and send them to us. Alternatively, you may wish to ask people to make the
donations on the JustGiving In Memory page. They can also send the donation directly to us; through our
website www.sane.org.uk/donate, or by cheque.
Raising money for a special occasion:
Some people donate to mark special occasions, e.g. a significant birthday,
wedding or anniversary. You can create a JustGiving page with a
personalised dedication to tell everyone what you’re celebrating, and why
you are supporting better mental health. We also have wristbands and
badges which can be used at your event as wedding favours, games prizes
or for goodie bags!
Online fundraising:
If you’re tech savvy and fancy doing something new and creative, turn online for your fundraising. Creating
a virtual event gives people a quick and easy way to donate.
Online Auction
An online auction is a fantastic way to raise funds from the comfort of your own home! Whether you’re
writing music or auctioning off last year’s unwanted Christmas presents, it’s a creative way to fundraise.
Online car boot sale
Fancy having a clear out, and raising money for better mental health without standing in a field all day?
Have your car boot sale online!
Get creative!
If you’re feeling creative, ask your friends and family to donate in order to receive an online gift. The gift
could be anything; a piece of art, a song, a virtual cupcake – whatever you can create! You could display all
of your work online so they can take their pick.

Fundraising Tools and Tips
Fundraising Tools - Collecting Sponsorship
Online Sponsorship
Creating an online fundraising page through JustGiving or Virgin Money Giving
is the easiest way for you to collect sponsorship money. They also reclaim
Gift Aid on eligible donations on our behalf. Creating a page is quick and easy;
you can personalise the page with photographs, and explain why you have
chosen to support SANE. Find out more and create your fundraising page by
visiting www.justgiving.com or www.virginmoneygiving.com/giving.
Offline Sponsorship
Not everyone likes to donate online. At the back of this pack you’ll find a sponsorship form you can use to collect
offline donations. We also have a range of collection boxes available. You can request a collection box using the
materials order form at the back of this pack.
Text giving
When you create a JustGiving page, a JustTextGiving code is generated.
This enables people to donate to your page by text. Find out more:
www.justgiving.com/justtextgiving.
You can also encourage people to donate £5 by texting SANE to 70500. We receive 100% of the money donated,
and supporters can also Gift Aid this donation.
Fundraising Tips - Making Your Donations Go Further
Gift Aid
Ensure your sponsors Gift Aid their donation if they are able. This means we
can claim back 25p for every £1 given, at no extra cost to the individual. You
can use the sample Gift Aid Declaration at the back of this pack. For more
information on Gift Aid visit www.hmrc.gov.uk/individuals/giving/gift-aid.htm.
Employer Matched Funding
Many companies have a matched funding scheme where they will match the amount
that you raise. Find out if your employer does this, and you could double your fundraising
total!

hashtags for mental health are: #mentalhealth, #mentalillness, #depression, #MHUK, #MH.
If you’re taking part in an organised event, look out for its hashtags and twitter accounts. For example, the Virgin
London Marathon’s twitter account is @LondonMarathon and the hashtag they use is #LondonMarathon. You
could tweet: ‘Very excited to be running #LondonMarathon for @charitySANE to support #mentalhealth recovery!
@LondonMarathon’
YouTube
You’ll find us on YouTube by searching charitySANE. Film a video diary, vlog, or
create an image montage of your fundraising in action. Create a captivating video
by telling your story; your motivations and emotions, and by filming the event itself.

Letting People Know
Tell the World
Contact the Press
Telling your family and friends about your fundraising is great, but to raise even
more awareness and stop mental health stigma, contact your local press. The best
way to do this is to create a Press Release. Adapt it to your event and attach
your best photos, then contact your local newspaper and radio station, and ask
if they will place an article or give you a free mention.
Advertise
Promote your fundraising by creating some posters to display in local schools, nurseries, council
buildings, coffee shops, and anywhere else you can think of. Just make sure you have permission
first! Your poster should be eye-catching, and include the key information about your event and
details of how people can sponsor you.
Write a blog
A brilliant way to spread the news about your fundraising and raise mental health awareness is to write a blog.
Write about your motivations, your aims, and your fundraising experience. Whether you decide to use a blogging
website like WordPress, Blogspot, or blog for SANE directly, (visit: sane.org.uk/how_you_can_help/blogging)
we’ll share your blog with our social media communities to get your voice heard. Remember to include any
photos and tell people how they can contribute to your fundraising!
Tell your story
The most captivating stories have an emotional
element. Many of our fundraisers have personal
experiences of a mental health journey, whether it
be their own or that of a loved one.
If you have a personal experience and feel able to
share it, tell your story! Whether you write a blog
or a press release, tell people what you have
experienced, how it made you feel, and why that
has inspired you to fundraise for people affected
by mental illness.
Let us help
We’re here to help you! If, while you’re spreading
the news about your fundraising, you need some
more help expressing what SANE does or the facts
about mental illness, please let us know.
We can also provide a Statement of Support or a
quote for press activity. Contact us at
SANE, St. Mark’s Studios, 14 Chillingworth Road, Islington, London, N7 8QJ
Registered Charity Number: 296572
Parental Consent
If you are under 16 and would like to fundraise for us, you will need to make your parent or guardian aware of
your fundraising plans, and get their consent. This is a legal requirement. Please ask your parent or guardian to
send an email to [email protected], or call 0203 805 1790, to confirm their consent for your fundraising
activities.
Promotional Material
Let us know if you’d like to use our logo on any promotional material you’re creating. Make sure you include our
registered charity number: 296572, and please state on any materials that you are raising money ‘in aid of
SANE’.
First Aid
You may need first aid provisions for your event. Some events require first aid cover
and others don’t – It usually depends on the number of people involved. Ask your local
council if you are unsure. It’s a good idea to do a risk assessment when planning your
event; this will help you think about any potential hazards or difficulties.
Collecting
If your event is in a public area, you will need permission from the local council to
collect donations. In some cases you may need a licence. Please contact your local
council to find out what the rules are as it differs between regions. It is illegal for
anyone under the age of 16 to take part in street collections. If you would like to
collect on private property (a supermarket or train station for instance) you will need
permission from the manager. We will need to see proof of these permissions, and
we can provide you with a letter of authentication if necessary.
Food Hygiene
If you’re selling food during your event, you’ll need to make sure that the
vendor/caterer is licensed. If you’re making food yourself, make sure the public know
the ingredients. Writing a card with a list of ingredients for each item is a good way of
doing this. For information about food hygiene regulations, visit: www.food.gov.uk
Licensing
For some events, you may need to obtain a licence. This can be gained from your local council for a small fee.
You will need a licence if:
You are selling alcohol - even if the venue is licensed; you will still need permission for the event
You are planning to serve food after 11pm
Your event takes place in an unlicensed venue and involves live music and/or alcohol
If you have any questions, or would like more information, please contact your local council.
Staying Safe
To ensure your fundraising goes as smoothly as possible, with no unexpected surprises along the way, here is a
check list of things to think about when planning your event.
