FUNDRAISING EXAMPLESCAKE BAKINGMiltoncross Academy have been busy baking, as one of their many fundraising activities, ahead of their Ghana trip in April 2017. They recently held a cake sale (including Ghana flag cupcakes) at school and raised a fantastic £221.63!

BAG PACKING… Sawtry Village Academy carried out many activities ahead of their Ghana trip in July 2016.

Their various activities included bag packing in their local supermarket, an Easter raffle and long-distance walking. One student even paddled 60 miles from

Northampton to Peterborough! Another is set to walk the 87-mile route of Hadrian’s Wall…

ACTIVITIES IN THE SCHOOL GYM Students from Pate’s Grammar School did some excellent fundraising for their Ghana trip! They not only raised funds for their trip but also participated in additional activities to raise money for African Adventures Foundation.

They held a number of events including raffles, tombolas, a race night, curry night and quiz night.

LONG WALKSCharles Darwin School have been fundraising hard for their Zanzibar trip next July and one of their big fundraising highlights has been walking to the Tanzania High Commission in London from their school in Bromley. They raised an outstanding £4,000, which is absolutely fantastic! Here you can see students in the school gym, where

they took it in turns to pedal through the night, and raised an amazing £500! They had already raised a further £500 beforehand, so a fantastic £1,000 donation was given to support our partner projects in Africa.

RAFFLES, TOMBOLAS, RACE, QUIZ AND CURRY NIGHTSCaroline and Dan took part in a number of fundraising activities for their trip to Kenya with Ely College, raising a total of £2,870 between them.

INDIVIDUAL BUSINESS INITIATIVE Lottie Kale travelled to Kenya with us in August 2015 with Springfield School and was very proactive with her fundraising, organising several events along with her friends ahead of the trip. She has now even set up her own business as a children’s party entertainer, dressing up as Elsa from Frozen. Using her initiative, Lottie managed to raise all the funds needed for her trip by Christmas and then went on to raise even more to support our partner projects through African Adventures Foundation.

“My trip to Kenya was an eye opener for me, and I have noticed a change in how I spend my money, as I think I value it a lot more now. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone who is thinking about going to Kenya. It is an amazing experience and one that I will never forget.” - Lottie Kale, Springfield School

Lottie even took her creativity to the classroom in Kenya!

SUPPORTFUNDRAISING SUPPORT AND IDEAS Our fundraising support and ideas can help you with covering the cost of your volunteer trip to Africa. We think fundraising is a great tool as it allows our trips to be accessible to volunteers from all walks of life.

With the help of our fundraising support and ideas, many of our volunteers have managed to raise the entire amount needed for their trip, which is a fantastic achievement! Not only does fundraising assist financially, it is also a great learning and development tool. Students, in particular, often gain confidence and a greater insight into the value of money through forward planning with spending and organising fundraising activities. Our staff have lots of experience in this area and are always on hand to provide fundraising support and ideas. You may find our online tools useful when planning your fundraising:

ONLINE SUPPORTFUNDMYTRAVEL

This is a site where you can tell people about your trip and ask people to make donations towards your fundraising target.

1. First, you will need to register yourself and your Africa trip as a ‘campaign’ on this site.

2. Next, we advise writing a couple of paragraphs for your trip page about the adventure you are about to take and your motivations for getting involved. Remember, at this point, to include our name, ‘African Adventures’, on your page and hyperlink it back to our website, so that people can see what great work you will be doing on your trip!

3. Finally, it is up to you to tell as many people as possible about your FundMyTravel page and ask for fundraising support! Send it to your contacts by email, text the link to all your friends and send the link out on Facebook and Twitter so that as many people as possible donate. Good luck!

We would love to see your FundMyTravel pages so please do email and let us know when you have set yours up!

EASYFUNDRAISING

This is a site which allows you, and your friends and family, to raise money towards your trip each time you shop online. It couldn’t be easier!

1. First, you will need to register yourself and your Africa trip as a good cause on this site.

2. Next, each time you want to do some online shopping, you simply need to go to EasyFundraising.org.uk and then search for the retailer in question from there. The site will

tell you whether your retailer is signed up here (most big brands are!) and also what percentage donation will be made to your trip, before redirecting you to the retailer site in question.

3. Finally, it is up to you to tell as many people as possible about your EasyFundraising page so that they can raise money for you when they shop online! Send the details to your friends and family by email, text and via Facebook and Twitter so that you can raise as much as possible. Good luck!

DIFFERENT WAYS TO FUNDRAISE INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISING

There are many activities that you can do on your own to fundraise for your trip. A good way to kick this off is to think about your skills and qualities and apply them to your fundraising. For example, if you are a dog lover, why not offer to walk dogs in your local area in return for cash? Or, if you are a good baker, why not bake cakes and give pieces out to people at work/school in return for donations towards your trip?

7

GROUP FUNDRAISING

If you are part of a group trip, why not get your heads together and think of ways to fundraise as a team. Fundraising support like this is great! Not only can your group motivate each other and work together to reach the target set, but you will also get to know each other better ahead of your trip. Bag packing in supermarkets is a fruitful and popular way to raise money. Make sure you are smiley and chatty and can tell people all about the great work you will be doing! Or perhaps you could organise a quiz night or party together…You will be having fun whilst raising money!

SPONSORSHIP

Why not sell sponsorship space on your African Adventures t-shirt to help pay for your trip? You can wear your branded t-shirt for fundraising activities and during your trip to promote the great work that you are doing and the sponsorship support you have received.

PERSONAL SAVINGS

We all have our little indulgences, whether it be new clothes, coffee and cake or trips to the cinema. Why not go without and instead save the money towards your trip? Not only will this help you appreciate the value of money, it will also give you the slightest insight into what it can be like to go without, like the children that we work with. Why

not put a little money away each month and also ask for money instead of presents for your birthday and Christmas for one year? Knowing that you have made special efforts to go on your trip will make it feel even more worthwhile and deserved.
