Nothing prepares you for the news that you have breast cancer. When I was diagnosed in 2014 I felt lost and scared. I needed somewhere to turn for guidance and support and the Breast Cancer Care online Forum gave me somewhere to go. It was in the early hours of the morning when I could not sleep that I would use the Forum for support – it was amazing to find so many other people like me with the same worries and concerns. Alongside the incredible support from my friends, Breast Cancer Care helped me through a very difficult time in my life. Thank you so much for taking on a walk and raising money for such a worthy cause that helps so many people like me.

Sue, diagnosed in 2014

TIPS FOR YOUR JUSTGIVING PAGE

Setting up a JustGiving page is an easy and effective way to fundraise. Make sure that you’re making the most of your page by personalising it with photos and updates, and don’t forget to share the link with all your friends and family so that the donations can start rolling in!

Tweet tweetTweet us @BCCareEvents and we’ll share it with our friends.

SmileAdd a photo so people know it’s you and can donate confidently. People who put a photo on their page tend to raise 15% more than those who don’t, so get snapping!

Make it personalThis is your chance to tell people all about your walk and why you’re doing it. So be you, let your personality shine and tell people what Breast Cancer Care means to you.

Keep it up to dateLeave updates so your supporters know what you’re up to before and after the walk.

Photo-tasticAdd your own photos of you training or at the event.

Set your own targetPeople who set themselves a target on their page raise up to 46% more! Whatever target you have in mind, put it up on your page because people like to help you get there.

Let everyone knowShare your page on Facebook so that all your friends know what you’re doing and how they can donate.

TWO QUICK TIPS

1 Ask your friends to sponsor you at the beginning of the month; they might feel more flush when they’ve just been paid.

2 Every time someone donates to your page, thank them with a personal mention on social media so they feel appreciated and others can be inspired.

FUNDRAISING TIPS FOR HOME

1. Hold a themed night in Invite family and friends and ask them to donate the money

they would have spent on a night out. Fundraising games can help to boost the money you raise whether you decide to have a pyjama party or a karaoke night.

2. Have a clear out A car boot sale is a great way to raise money and have

a spring clean at the same time. Tidy cupboards + hitting your fundraising target = an excellent day’s work.

3. Get on social media Let your sponsors know that for every £20 you raise

you’ll post a photo on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram of you wearing pink and orange fancy dress. The more embarrassing the photo, the keener all your friends will be to help you hit your target!

4. Use your skills If you’re a dab hand with a sewing machine ask for a

donation to mend your friends clothes, or if you know how to make those chromes sparkle you could wash your neighbours’ cars. Your friends benefit from your skills and your fundraising gets a boost – it’s win-win.

There are loads of ways to get your friends and family involved in your fundraising – here are a few ideas to get you started.

‘ The theme of my party was cocktails, mocktails, wine and nibbles. My husband and two of his friends were mixologists on the night – they had a great time doing impressions of Tom Cruise! I had a pink jar filled with loom bands and asked friends to guess the number, and we also played bingo and had a voucher for a manicure at a local salon as the prize. The party raised an amazing £424! It was great fun.’ Angela, Haverfordwest

FUNDRAISING TIPS FOR WORK

1. Don’t knock the classics Having a bake sale or a ‘non-uniform’ day are classics for

a reason. Ask for donations for your tasty bakes or charge £2 for people to dress down (or wear pink fancy dress).

2. Swear bucket Introduce a swear bucket at work, with a £1 donation for

every slip up, or if your office is guilty of acronym overuse have an acronym bucket instead. You’ll hit your fundraising KPIs by EOP with time left for AOB.

3. Get quizzical Replace Friday drinks with a pub quiz at your work local.

Boost your total from the night by having a raffle - you can ask local businesses to donate prizes. Be sure to read our raffle guidelines.

4. Double your money Ask your company if they have a matched giving scheme,

it’s a really easy way to boost your fundraising total.

‘ I held a bake sale at work. Everyone brought in a fab variety of cakes and there was lots left over for elevenses the next day - no diets that week in the office! We had some savoury food as well which was all gone in 15 minutes and there was also a raffle with an afternoon tea hamper as the prize. Everyone had a great time and I got so much support from my colleagues.’ Sarah, Cardiff

WE’RE HERE TO HELP

1. Tell people why you’re walking Sharing the importance of the cause with people will really help them to understand why they should sponsor you – plus it will remind you that you are doing something incredible and that the money you raise will make a real difference to the lives of people affected by breast cancer.

2. Find new people for your fundraising If you normally ask friends and family, try doing something at work, at a club you

belong to, or in your local community.

3. Plan ahead Give yourself plenty of time to raise your sponsorship. For fundraising events

at home or at work you need to give all your friends and colleagues plenty of warning so that they can book your event in their diary and make sure they turn up with plenty of cash!

If you’re holding a big fundraising event we can also help by supplying balloons, collection boxes, banner roll and pin badges for you to fundraise with. If you would like any of these materials or you just want to chat about your fundraising then you can call us on 020 7960 3413 or email [email protected]
