From the Vicarage Come from the sea is seaweed,

red and yellow seaweed,

tangles thrown upon the shore

left by the ebbing tide.

Gentle Brigid, Mary mild,

Patrick, saint of power,

Michael, bring us seaweed,

to fertilise our land. Dear friends, Seaweed to most of us brings back memories of family holidays or outings to the seaside. We might remember being fascinated by this wet and slimy plant, or been scared by it wrapping around our legs when we paddled in the sea. We might have enjoyed its salty smell, as it lay drying on the shoreline, discovered sea shells entangled in its rubbery branches, and I seem to remember a type of seaweed had pods you could satisfyingly pop? Or maybe we encountered seaweed spoilt by oil and rubbish? In the Celtic prayer (above) we have a lovely description of seaweed, followed by a plea to the saints to send it to the is-landers, a strange request to our ears. But at the time, seaweed was a vital (perhaps the only) source of salt, some seaweed could be eaten (providing vital nutrients) and seaweed was used to fertilise the poor soil, maybe making the crucial difference between a good or poor harvest, enough to eat or hunger. Perhaps we need to follow the example of those who lived in the Hebrides, by appreciating and treasuring seaweed and the other plants of the sea more than we do. Not only are they amazing in texture, smell, colour and shape, but they also provide a home for many creatures and benefits for humankind, including a capacity for capturing carbon. And of course some seaweed is still edible and can be sustainably farmed. May old wisdom inspire new deeds, as we continue to seek ways to protect as well as profit from the seas. With my blessing,

Revd Rosy

St Martin’s Parish Church, West Drayton

Covid and the Church

As Covid cases continue to rise, we aim to do all that is possible to make St Martin’s a safe space to visit or wor-ship in, and our doors remain open to everyone in our community, of whatever Faith or none. St Martin’s is well ventilated and cleaned, but everyone has a vital part to play when it comes to public health, supporting the NHS, and caring for our neighbours. Therefore, although some government restrictions have been eased, please be cautious, careful, and sensitive to the needs of others.

Help to protect vulnerable people, your household and yourself

by still remembering

Face - Hands - Space - Track & Trace

Please when coming to a worship service or other event

Continue to wear a face covering indoors when there are others close to you

Keep sanitising your hands Give people plenty of space

Thank you for your understanding. From the Vicar, Church Wardens and the Standing Committee

Prayer Page

Lord of the Ocean, Lord of the seas: Let the fish swim strong and free. Lord of the wavetops, Lord of the shore: Keep them safe for evermore.

Out of doors in the summer Out of doors in the sun Thank you, God, for the summer and all of our outdoor fun.

Bread is a lovely thing to eat - God bless the barley and the wheat. A lovely thing to breathe is air - God bless the sunshine every-where. The earth’s a lovely place to know - God bless the folks who come and go. Alive’s a lovely thing to be - Giver of life – we say – bless thee!

Dear God, may our dog be loyal and obedient and patient and gentle and kind and fun. May everyone in the family learn to be like that.

Love Your Burial Ground

Our first churchyard open day in conjunction with “Love Your Burial Ground Week” was a great success. It was a glorious sunny day and over one hundred people came along to take part. There were activities for everyone, sales of plants and crafts and of course refreshments. Overall feedback was very positive and we hope to be able to hold a similar event next year.
