Dear Janssen School Community,
Oh my goodness, everyone. Quarter 4 is in full swing and our students
and staff continue to work hard to produce quality work. I truly believe
these strong efforts from our students and staff are because of our
school’s culture. What I have continually shared this year is that our
culture is a result of our behaviors. Another way that I frame this is:
“Our behaviors drive our culture”. What fosters this framework is our
intentionality to promote, apply, recognize, and reflect on our behaviors.
For example, each staff meeting we reflect on our following universal
behaviors:
we study/adjust from our students’ gaps/needs
we collaborate
we build relationships
we care
When we collaborate, we reflect on student behaviors: How can stu-
dents reflect on their gap, select a strategy to close the gap, and try the
strategy with additional opportunities to learn? Why such intentions?
We want each of our students to be problem solvers so they can meet
their potential. Is it hard work? You bet. Is it good work? Yes, and we
will continue to study and adjust to improve. Concurrently, we reflect
on how to foster positive relationships.
Our school year is moving quickly and before we know it, it will be com-
ing to its end. We will be steadfast to our vision and school safety. The
same universal behaviors (above) we practiced to start the school year
will continue until our last day of school. What I ask from our families
is that we continue to work together for our students—support, encour-
age, and remind them to persevere as students and practice our com-
munity values as citizens. I want for each student at Janssen to be
proud of their work and confident as learners.
In conclusion, we are always available for you. Parent feedback and
questions are important to our improvement process. You can reach out
to your child’s teachers, school counselor, and me. We are better when
we work together.
Sincerely,
Hercules Nikolaou, Ph.D.

Happy April Janssen Families! I hope everyone
had an enjoyable spring break.
Life Skills Class Updates
Currently in Life Skills at all grade levels, stu-
dents are learning about the problem solving
process. This process gives students steps that
they can apply to small problems that they en-
counter individually or with peers. Problem solv-
ing is an important skill that empowers to chil-
dren persevere through problems with school
work, friends, siblings, etc.
For grades K-1, the problem solving steps are:
1. How do I feel (Do I need to calm down?)
2. What is the problem?
3. What can I do?
For grades 2-5, we learn the “STEP” process
from our Second Step Curriculum. Those steps
involve:
S- Say the problem
T- Think of solutions
E- Explore consequences
P- Pick a solution
During these lessons we look at age appropriate
problem scenarios and apply the problem solving
process to those scenarios. I also bring in Kelso’s
choices of examples of solutions that students
can use to solve problems with peers. We also
discuss how to tell when a problem is a big prob-
lem that requires help from a trusted adult.
Looking Ahead to May
It is hard to believe that we only have a handful
of Life Skills lessons left for the year! After we
tackle problem solving, we will be rounding out
the school year with lessons about career clus-
ters. This is a part of the Academic and Career
Planning (ACP) initiative through the state of
Wisconsin. More information about the KASD
approach to ACP can be found here:

Attention Elementary School Parents,
We have a great opportunity for your children to build connections with the high schoolers in the Kimberly community! On May 11th, the indoor training facility at Kimberly High School will be hosting a Teens with Youth Sports Day. This is a day where students will play games, and build connections throughout the community. Children will choose two of the four sports offered (tee-ball, soccer, football, volleyball), and they will be led through various games, drills, and activities by high schoolers who play those sports at KHS! This day will also include a group game of kickball, as well as a snack for all attendees. This event is free and open to any first through fourth grader in the Kimberly community who fills out the forms below. If your child is interested in attending, please fill out the corresponding form before May 1st. The forms will close after receiving 60 responses, so it is first come first serve.
