THE CITY #THECITY#

Fukuoka is the capital city of the FukuokaPrefecture and is situated on the northernshore of the island of Kyūshū. The city isdivided into seven wards (ku) of which thecentral areas of Chuo-ku and Hakata-kuwill be of most interest to the visitor.

Chuo-ku ward, located west of theNaka-gawa River, is the commercial andentertainment hub of the city. At its heartlies the district of Tenjin to which mostvisitors will undoubtedly be drawn, luredby the bright lights of its bars andrestaurants and the excellent array ofboutiques.

West of Tenjin is Ohori-koen Park and theruins of the old castle whilst further alongin Sawara-ku ward is the Momochi district.Momochi is a modern waterfront area withwide tree lined streets, plenty of cafés andrestaurants and green public parks. Hereyou will find the Fukuoka Tower and alsothe Fukuoka Dome, home of the city’sbaseball team, the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks.

East of the river in Hakata-ku is where youwill find most of the old shrines andtemples, whilst the entertainment districtof Nakasu lies between the sandbank ofthe Naka River and the Hakata River.Nakasu is one of the major red-lightdistricts in Japan as well as home to a bignumber of fashionable restaurants. TheNakasu district also houses expensiveshops along the Riverain and a stroll alongthe sandbank is a nice way to spend the

afternoon.
