A NEW PARK FOR LOS PACOS. NO ALCOHOL FOR CHILDREN.

Information provided by

FUENGIROLA Council

launched a mobile phone app to

stay in touch with local residents.

In its ongoing efforts to turn

Fuengirola into a smart city and

to use information and

communication technologies to

offer more efficient and

interactive public services, the

Council launched Juntos

Fuengirola Avanza, a state-of-

the-art free smartphone

application that allows local

residents to inform authorities of

any breakdown in town that

needs repairing.

Until now, anyone wishing to

inform local authorities of any

problems affecting public

services needed to call the toll

free number 900.20.20.50 or the

GECOR system, implemented in

2010. This tool, however, is faster

and allows people to interact

directly with Council authorities,

saving time and money, said

Mayor Esperanza Oña.

Using the app is very simple:

the user must first register and

includes specific information

such as where the repair needs to

be done, what needs to be done,

and the system even gives users

the possibility to send a picture

via their smartphones. Once the

request has been sent, the user

will get an email confirming that

it has been received. The user will

also be sent a reference number,

with which he or she can keep

track of their requests.

The request is automatically

linked to the user’s phone

number, which should help deter

pranksters. The system is user-

friendly and once people become

used to it, it will not take them

more than 15 seconds to make

their requests, said the mayor.

“Our citizens will now be more

FUENGIROLA is to be the first

town in Costa del Sol to provide

coeliacs easier access to gluten-

free food in fully regulated bars

and restaurants.

Coeliac disease occurs in

genetically predisposed people

and is caused by an immune

response to gluten, said Social

Services councillor, Jose

Martin. People suffering from

it must follow a lifelong gluten-

free diet and be very careful

when cooking to avoid cross

contamination with foods

containing gluten.

It is estimated that three per

cent of the population have

coeliac disease.

“Many people from

Fuengirola and visitors to the

town are affected by this

disease. That is the reason why

we want to create a network of

bars, hotels, hostels, restaurants

and all sorts of businesses where

coeliacs can visit without

problems,” said Martin. As

many as 941 businesses in

Fuengirola could participate in

the initiative.

The Council has been in

contact with the Malaga Celiac

Association (ACEMA) to

determine what the next steps

should be in bringing the project

to light. The participating

businesses will be invited to a

workshop where they will not

only learn what products are

suitable for a gluten-free diet,

but also how they are supposed

to be prepared.

There are already bars in town

offering a similar service, but

we want to create an official

network. Information on where

to find coeliac-friendly

businesses will be published on

the Council’s and the Tourist

Department’s websites.

“We are also considering the

possibility of creating a map

showing where the coeliac-

friendly businesses are,”

remarked Martin.

PARENTS do not need to worry about

their underage children having access to

alcoholic beverages at the Feria del

Rosario in Fuengirola.

For second year in a row, there is to be

a stand at Feria del Rosario especially

designed for minors, where only non-

alcoholic beverages will be served. The

stand is to be located inside a 50-square

metre tent next to Peña Diana and there

will be security guards making sure no

one drinking alcohol enters the

especially designated area.

“A lot of children are old enough to go

to the feria on their own or to move

about while their parents enjoy the peñas

and this stand is especially designed for

them. We guarantee parents that their

children will not be served alcoholic

beverages there,” said Festivities

Councillor Isabel Moreno. “There will

be cocktails, including rebujitos, mojitos

and caipirinhas, but without alcohol and

at low prices,” she added.

FOREIGN Residents Councillor Katja Westerdahl

is asking for everyone’s help to decorate Plaza de La

Constitucion. Westerdahl held a press conference on

Friday October 3 accompanied by Minna Kantola,

Director of the Finnish Adult Education School

Sofia Opisto to ask for help with beautiful knitted

and crocheted decorations.

“What is important is that people participate. The

decorations do not have to be elaborate. Anyone

who is interested in knitting and crocheting can

participate and with everyone’s help we can

decorate the entire Plaza,” said Westerdahl, adding

that the idea had a great turnout back in March.

Kantola encouraged residents interested to go to

Cafeteria Paris on Thursdays at around 12pm to

crochet. “Everyone is welcome,” she said.
