  • Your Fleet is onlY creAtinG vAlue When it’s At seA, in motion

To make sure that happens, it’s vital that fuel oil is kept in prime condition, to keep engines running smoothly and efficiently, and to ensure full compliance with environmental and operational regulations.

This is a complex area. Inconsistency and degradation of fuel quality can cause serious problems for ships. It can mean time lost on the maintenance and repair of fuel and combustion systems. And fuel that doesn’t burn efficiently will generate more carbon emissions and result in negative impact on the environment.

Here’s where Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) can help with a range of fuel treatments to maintain the efficient running of your vessels and reduce operating costs. Using Unitor fuel treatments where required will improve fuel efficiency and prevent excess mechanical wear caused by contaminants in the fuel. At the same time, you’ll keep your vessels running in line with current environmental regulations.

Several solutions, with a single aim: to keep your fleet on the move.

The WSS product line offers a wide range of effective solutions with minimal environmental impact. The treatments themselves are manufactured according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. We offer a variety of fuel testing options for water content, density, viscosity and compatibility that can be carried out during bunkering. This allows crew to take immediate action if problems are detected, reducing time in port and preventing further issues developing down the line.

Our range of fuel treatments and additives has been designed specifically to address the full spectrum of technical challenges:

Fuel lubrIcIty Low sulphur fuels show reduced lubricity which can lead to increased wear of pre-engine components such as injectors and fuel pumps. The reduction of sulphur is often blamed for the problems with lubricity, however lower sulphur content is not the single cause. The refining process in which the sulphur is removed also removes other natural lubrication components. This means that fuels with similar sulphur levels can have different lubrication properties.

DIesel Fuel stabIlItyMost distillate fuels are vulnerable to degradation through a range of reactions. The result of fuel degradation is colour change, gum formation and sedimentation. This can have a severe effect on the long-term storage of fuels and can also cause corrosion of the fuel system. The best protection for the fuel is to add a fuel stabiliser during bunkering.

Heavy Fuel stabIlItyThe use of low sulphur fuels, especially in Emission Control Areas (ECAs), has led to the production of more blended fuels. But blending can cause incompatibility problems, especially if the fuel is high in asphaltene. An unstable fuel oil will cause excessive sludging, and subsequent filter and separator problems.

IgnItIon anD combustIon QualIty The need to change or blend fuel supplies to meet SOx emission regulations can also affect the ignition and combustion characteristics of the fuel. Poor combustion and ignition may lead to increased carbon deposits in the engine. Excessive fouling of the scavenge air receiver combined with late ignition or prolonged combustion may lead to a build up of soot deposits and the risk of fire. For steam boilers poor ignition quality may lead to starting problems and more frequent flame failures.

DeposIt FormatIonIn heavy fuels there are contaminants in the form of metals. These contaminants, especially the sodium and vanadium, tend to form sticky materials that deposit on exhaust valves and turbo chargers. These deposits are highly corrosive which can attack the metal causing damage and failure. Formed deposits also have a high insulating effect which reduces the overall efficiency and increases the cost of running the installation.

  • test kIts

Waiting in port for the test results of bunkered fuel costs time and money. But sailing without them is a risk. test kits provided by Wilhelmsen ships service let your technicians carry out fuel analysis quickly and accurately, with rapid results. suitable both for heavy and distillate fuels, our kits can be used to measure water content, density, viscosity and compatibility. And where problems are detected, these can often be remedied effectively by the application of unitor fuel treatments.

    eXHaust emIssIons controls

tighter controls over exhaust emissions have direct implications for the specification of fuel oils. these regulations mean that ships must switch fuels when entering and leaving regulated areas – a situation that increases the likelihood of issues with fuel compatibilty and the attendant problems of deposition, corrosion, blockages and poor combustion. unitor testing and fuel treatments help to prevent fuel problems and avoid further costs from maintenance and repair.
