Improving lubricity of (ultra) low sulphur fuel

… Effective 1st of this year, the
European Union has regulation in
place mandating the consumption of
0.1% sulphur content marine gasoil
(MGO) for vessels in port. The EU
mandate is only for vessels at berth.
For vessels calling US ports it is
mandatory that they must operate
on a max. 0.5% sulphur content no
less than 24 nautical miles from
shore.
The new standard requires a
transition for main & auxiliary
engines operating on heavy fuel to
the new low sulphur fuels.
The frequent use of these low
sulphur fuels can cause devastating
problems down the line. The hydro-
processing process used to remove
the sulphur from fuels also removes
the lubricity properties of the fuel.
When burning low sulphur fuels the
lack of lubrication properties can
cause metal to metal contact
resulting in excessive wear of
engine parts like fuel injection
pumps.
By adding a lubricity additive to the
low sulpur diesel fuel this problem can
be counteracted.
Marine Care supplies Caretreat FOT LS,
a lubricity improving fuel oil
conditioner, not only to deal with poor
lubricity properties but at the same
time dealing with sludge dissolving &
dispersion problems, polymerization
prevention, inhibiting asphaltenic
sludge formation and paraffin wax
separation resulting in less clogging of
fuel filters and fuel injector fouling &
emulsion breaking resulting in
improved pre-combustion conditions.
Caretreat FOT LS is added to low
sulphur Fuel oil and MGO to provide
the lubrication properties to the fuel
for an enhanced performance.
The product is added directly into the
service tank for MGO prior to
bunkering with the dose 1 liter product
to 5000 liters MGO. This can be done
directly into the bunker tank via the
sounding pipes or by means of a
dosing unit (contact your Marine Care
representative).
