Always next year! We will be moving in to the holidays with Thanksgiving just around the corner. It’s a time to look back and appreciate all of the blessings we have received during the past year. Certainly health and family come to mind. One day I was out on the water in St Clair and the fishing was slow. I looked around with the sun shining on the water and the sparkle that it gave off. There were birds, sailboats and all kinds of activity around us. At that point I realized how in- credibly blessed I was to be allowed to experience this moment. I am sure many of you have felt the same way watching a sunrise or sunset on your fa- vorite lake. Every time I get stressed or frustrated I recall a moment like this and it helps to bring me back to an even keel. About 10 or 11 years ago, I ran in to Mark Rue at a sports store. Mark grew up in our old neighborhood and knew my sister. He invited me to attend an FRV meeting. I took him up on it and here I am, “El Presidente.” That chance meeting has resulted in making new friends, fishing new bodies of water, learning the latest techniques and meeting some terrific guides and fisherman. Most rewarding has been the clubs work with kids, stocking and support for other local causes. For this I am grateful. BRAD WIRT IS IN THE HOUSE ON

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 13TH

2017!!

Our speaker on Wednesday December 13th will be Brad

Wirt of Brad’s Guide Service! Brad is a licensed and fully

insured guide in central Wisconsin. He grew up in a small

town right on the Wisconsin River and fished the river

most of his life! These are the waters he loves and spe-

cializes in fishing. Brad will give you an experience that

you won't forget with either a half or full days fishing trip

on the scenic Wisconsin River. He fishes for all species

including, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Northern Pike, and

the mighty Muskellunge. Brad grew up fishing the rivers

and lakes of Central and Northern Wisconsin with his fam-

ily and he enjoys passing the knowledge of those waters

onto his clients and friends. Brad has years of experience

and knowledge of current weather patterns and seasonal

changes. Brad wants his clients to have fun and catch

fish; but he also teaches the Why, What, and Where's of

it all as well. A strong believer of catch and release on

Muskellunge, Smallmouth Bass and the large female Walleyes, Brad believes it is the sportsman’s re-

sponsibility to protect the resource. He also advocates taking a few smaller male walleyes for the fry-

ing pan! Brad’s favorite type of fishing in the Fall is using live bait. “There is nothing more exciting

thank seeing a youngster catch a big Musky on a sucker” says Brad. Using live bait, I have had kids as

young as 6 years old hook and land muskies by themselves. Please take some time to check out the

Fishing News, Photo Gallery, and all the other links attached to his website at

www.bradsguideservice.com Hope you can make this meeting and hear what Brad has to say about

Wisconsin River Muskies!

Admission is $3.00/person at the door. Our meeting begins at 7:00PM. The

Schaumburg Golf Club is located at 401 N. Roselle Road in Schaumburg, IL. All meetings are open to the public!

2017 Illinois Muskie Stocking Report

Summarized by Ray Thompson

Note: This article is based, in part, on the 2017 Jake Wolf Hatchery report. It also includes 450-12 to 14 inch Wiscon-sin strain fingerlings purchased by the Fox River Chapter of Muskies, Inc. from the Gollon Fish Farm in Dodgeville, WI. A total of 29 Illinois bodies of water were stocked with 20,814-12”-13” muskie fingerlings, produced at the Jake Wolf Hatchery, by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in 2017. The hatchery also produced and stocked a total of 360,819 surplus fry (330,104), and under-sized fingerlings (7,580-1.5”), (12,393-3”), and (10,742-5”). On June 22, a total of 26,245 -5” fingerlings were stocked into three rearing ponds. The fry stocked into a rearing pond at Prai-rie Lake will be harvested and stocked later this fall. Table 1 summarizes the pond production, which averaged 79 percent, as compared to almost 84 percent last year. Additionally, 525 fish reached a 13” average while waiting to be harvested from the last pond and were stocked on September 1.

Table 1

Table 2 details the individual lake stockings from all sources.
