THE EDITOR

Dear Readers,

Water, water everywhere, Nor any drop to drink. May be Lines from “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

However, this does not apply only to Sailors/Mariners in the context we see this world today. 75 – 80% of the surface of this Earth is filled with water, in the form of Oceans and seas. A miniscule proportion of this 75 – 80% water is potable / consumable.

Depletion of water bodies/sources needs to be viewed in the larger context of Global Warming and Climate Change. For example, the exploitation of water aquifers is purported to be the cause for many earthquakes and desertification wherein the water which acts as a mechanism to balance is being lapped up by greedy humans. On another front, we have floods in some parts of the country while the others are under the grip of drought. If we view this under a microscope, the problem is rampant and sobering due to the simple fact that India is a nation with a billion+ people. What would have been a minor issue escalates due to the problem of numbers here.

This edition of Yagna is the chime of a Warning Bell and a squirrel’s effort in creating awareness or generating the need to save or conserve water, starting today. We hope this is well received and helps build a stronger knowledge base amongst our audience.

We extend this opportunity to welcome articles / papers and the like from you which would help contribute to help improve this knowledge base amongst our audience. At this juncture we would like to thank the people who acted as the backbone for this successful yagna. We thank our subeditors, student editors, column in charges for bringing light about this “Mission Priceless Drop”. We thank our Designing Partner - Odd Dimension Advertising and our Print Partner - Vinagaya Screens.

Hello Readers!

We are Anusha and Issac from Grade 11; your new student editors for Yagna. As student editors, we felt the need of creating awareness among readers regarding water consumption and thus awareness on a larger scale which will eventually lead to a solution be brought toward the mission “Priceless Drop”

All of us live in cities and enjoy carefree and sophisticated lifestyles with 24 hours supply of running water from taps, swimming pools and decorative fountains. Sheltered in this layer of comfort, many of us remain unaware of the impact of such water-intensive activities on our environment.

Rapid urbanization and water pollution is aggravating an already grim scenario of water scarcity, thereby putting enormous pressure on the quality and quantity of surface and groundwater sources. Water is a resource that must be saved. It is a precious natural resource and is replenished naturally. Water wasted is water lost. Water is the most valuable gift of God for human existence. Life exists on Earth because of availability of water. Itself being tasteless, odorless and colorless, it adds taste, color and flavor to life. It is found everywhere and known as a life saving elixir. It takes nothing from us but gives life to us.

“If we don’t take care of the water cycle, it will not take care of our life cycle.”

Three-fourths part of this earth is water; however, we need to conserve water as the percentage of potable water is miniscule. Without water life is not possible on earth. All living beings - humans, animals and plants need water, to grow, develop and live. We need water in all activities from morning till night like drinking,

cooking, bathing, washing clothes, gardening etc.People working in different domains need water for different purposes. Farmers need water to grow crops, industrialists for various industrial purposes, electricity plants to generate hydro-electricity, etc. So, we should save clean water for the wellness of our future generations and wildlife animals. People in many places globally are suffering due to acute water scarcity or complete lack of water or bad water quality in their regions.

“Water – A priceless treasure, save it with pleasure”

Uncommon ways to save water:

• Install water meters to measure water supply just like electricity and charge on the basis of consumption.

• Use green manure; recycle crop residues and animal manure in fields to improve the soil organic matter which will in turn increase water holding and retention capacity of soil.

• Reusing or recycling water should be made a habit/law.

• Promote growth of water-efficient crops thereby reducing the stress / utilization of water. Crop irrigation alone accounts for 70% of the world’s fresh water consumption.

• Optimal use of water by keeping the tap closed while washing hand, tooth brushing, face wash, washing dishes, etc. also will reduce the wastage of water.

“Thousands Lived without Love, but not without water. So SAVE WATER.”

“Examination of family constellation, we can understand the people’s lifestyle. By understanding their outlooks on life, we can understand the roles people have in their families.” - Alfred AdlerA person’s family constellation includes the composition of the family, each person’s role and the reciprocal transactions that a person has, during the early formative years with siblings and parents. Children get influenced by how parent(s) and siblings respond to them. Each child plays a vital role in the family that is determined by interactions and transactions within that family.Birth order is another important aspect of families that has a profound impact on child’s development. Here we have some of the identification of psychological positions and characteristics believed to be associated with each development for better understanding. 1. Oldest Children - First born tend to be the most intelligent and achieving person. Their verbal skills are especially strong. First born who initially grow up in a family of adults, tend to be dependable, well organized and responsible. They generally behave well and cooperative in conforming to societal expectations. Their strength often helps them attain positions of leadership. First born, if they happen to be the only child in the family, tend to be the center of attention and sometimes are spoiled. When siblings are born, oldest children tend to feel dethroned and may feel threatened, angry, fearful and jealous in response to losing their special role as only child. Dealing effectively with the birth of siblings can help firstborns to become more self-confident.2. Second Born - They feel pressure to catch up and to compete with the oldest child. Because second born children usually realize that they cannot outdo the success the firstborn achieved. A common pattern is for a firstborn to excel in a traditional area such as English or Mathematics and for the second born to seek success in a more creative and less conventional area such as singing

or drawing. They will emphasize more on social rather than academic success.Second born children tend to be more caring, friendly and expressive than their older siblings.3. Youngest children - They may be pampered and spoiled by the rest of the family, they may feel a need to go at top speed at all times just to keep up with their older siblings. These children would experience strong feelings of inferiority. They often become adventurous, easy going, empathic, sociable and innovative. They typically pursue interests that are all their own to avoid competition with siblings. When we focus on the youngest child, we need to pay more attention on the developmental area. Educating the children on an effective basis may help the child in achieving things.4. The One and Only child - They have much in common with both firstborn and youngest child. They seek achievement like firstborn and usually enjoy being the center of attention like the youngest. They may become pampered and spoiled; focusing only on their own needs, but also may integrate the achievement orientation of the firstborn with the creativity of later born children. In the recent days, we are reading a lot from newspaper and television regarding the personality issues (especially Sexual abuse). The reason for such concern may be because of their developmental stages. When a child is not handled properly and healthily according to their birth order, then the child may feel dethroned and inferior. These emotions stimulate the children to behave inappropriate to the circumstances. When we identify and guide them on the right track, they will be a change factor for a peaceful and meaningful society.

We began our interview with a feeling of suffused warmth from the family of Mr.Kalaivanan Chandrasekaran .B.Sc., CHM who has relocated himself from the United States of America to India to pursue his passion of farming.

Mr. Kalaivanan started with an in-depth explanation about Hi-Tech farming and Drip Irrigation. He expressed that Drip Irrigation is the best method to save adequate water for agriculture during drought. He drew a clear picture of the problems faced by the farmers in today’s agricultural world. He suggested that ‘The Green House’ method of farming is one of the best sources for yielding high income and cultivation. He further enlightened us by giving a thought that even during heavy rain and storm this method of farming is helpful. He further shared a gist of various facilities available for the

farmers. He expressed that, even though the government provides aid and loans for farmers it is inadequate.

He further spoke about natural farming. He said that in earlier days it was sole means of farming, however, now hybrid seeds are used commonly in farming. He was worried, that, due to the use of hybrid seeds many insects /pests arise in crops and it gets multiplied very quickly in one day, which affects the quality and the production of crops. Cyclically, to avoid this, we use advanced pesticides for destroying these pests which results in different infections and diseases in crops and damage to soil. He further made us understand that the person who sells the hybrid seeds also sells the pesticides together with the seed as the solution for the problem. So, it finally turns out that “we are chained to the hybrid seeds and pesticides for a lifetime”.

He added painfully, that at the end of the day there won’t be any benefit for the farmers i.e. to say farmers won’t even get the production cost in return.

He was expressing how earlier, there used to be more trees which helped to bring rain. Now, the situation has changed. We cut down trees, take sand from rivers, rocks, stones and sell them for our short-term benefits. Mr Kalaivanan Chandrasekar explained that natural resources such as sand, rocks are very much important to save /store water however due to the prevailing situation everything has been used improperly and has created a great demand for water especially for agriculture. He said that the government should take necessary actions on mining and quarrying, as it has drastically reduced the water level which resulted in water scarcity.

He further added that farmers should do something to save the rainwater. He shared with us that, he has constructed a small pond like area where around 3 Lakh Liters water can be stored. He said that he is using that water for Drip Irrigation. He gave awareness that even government gives helping hand by sanctioning subsidy to construct such ponds for the farmers.

He further explained that he has adopted the modern method of farming and he is happy that it moves well and yields more.

Tips for saving water:

• In an open field, try to crop more crops instead of growing a single crop by which the water wastage can be controlled

• If there is plenty of water, the usage of water should be restricted, and we should preserve the water for

future use.

• Build the rainwater harvesting area to preserve rainwater.

Further he spoke about the poly house and the greenhouse for agriculture. He said that Farmers no longer must apply water, fertilizers, and pesticides uniformly across entire fields. Instead, they can use the minimum quantities required and target very specific areas, or even treat individual plants differently. He shared the benefits of Polyhouse /greenhouse as

• Higher crop productivity

• Decreased use of water, fertilizer and pesticides, which in turn keep the costs down

• Reduced impact on natural ecosystems

• Less runoff chemicals into rivers and groundwater

• Increased worker safety

With this as the backdrop he educated students on Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) by which plants are grown inside a greenhouse or grow room. He further added that the controlled environment allows the grower to maintain the proper light, carbon dioxide, temperature, humidity, water, pH levels and nutrients to produce crops year-round. He educated us with the entire process of controlled environment agriculture where it focuses on making the most of space, labor, water, energy, nutrients and capital to operate while still producing a bountiful harvest. In this method of cultivation, pests are best managed through integrated pest management (IPM).

He further articulated that now we see another big wave of technology reshaping our traditional industries and certainly agriculture is one of the most basic ones. Hybrid seed production is predominant aspect in modern agriculture and home gardening. Hybrid seeds are produced by cross-pollinating two different strains of plants. Hybrid seeds are scientifically produced, either to sell to consumers or to grow commercial crops. As such, the hybridization often focuses on

pest or disease resistance, color, size, and how well the harvested crop responds to transporting. Nutritional values are rarely a concern and may suffer in comparison to non-hybrid seeds. He also highlighted the cons of using such hybrid seeds as being more expensive, less nutritious and less tasty and preserving hybrid seeds is usually not practical.

As a part of the farming community, shared problems faced by them in crop production. He added that the main problem as on date in agriculture is dependence on rainwater, economy and Pollution. He expressed that farmers can’t even bid their own selling price on their produce, so they can’t make a profit. They suffer with shortage of water as many quarry’s, mines are constructed near agricultural lands, resulting in the water table to dip. Farmer’s couldn’t get loan from banks because of their occupation instability.

What Government can do?

Government can allow the farmer’s to fix their own selling price for their own produce. By this the farmers can directly connect with the consumer and reap the profit.

Mining, and other digging activities must be banned near agricultural grounds.

Govt. can give them some more economic support apart from what they already provide and it should be done directly.

Govt. should ban all the Genetically Modified [GM] seeds inside our country as they are harmful to health. (even if it gives more yield)

ADVENTURE CLUBOn 27th July 2019, Saturday, as a part of adventure club activity QMIS had organized its first trek for the year 2019-2020 to KuttuPatti, Dindigul District. Students started the trek to the mountainous KuttuPatti area. They carried refreshments in their backpacks. It was a pleasant day. The sun was mild, and a gentle breeze was blowing. While climbing uphill it was a tough job for many of them, but everybody motivated each other. It is true that “A journey of thousand miles seem easier while walking with your loved ones”.

Everyone had lunch sitting side by side while they were enjoying the beauty of nature and took snaps of it with their peer groups. After lunch, students gathered together to descend to the base point. The ultimate goal of trekking is to realize that “Coming down is easy but climbing up is difficult, just as success of life depends on how much steps you are climbing and how much steps you are going down.” At the end, each student was happy and had thoroughly enjoyed the trek. They have achieved their main motto that “everyone should enjoy”.

Traditional Craft Fair 2019-20“People without the knowledge of their past, origin and culture is like a tree with no roots.”

Keeping this quote in mind, The Heritage Club had taken a great effort in inculcating the values of our tradition to our children. The club incharges Ms.Archana, Ms.Gomathi, Ms.Anitha, Ms.Shivani along with the guidance of Ms.Christinal organized a traditional craft fair on 26.08.19. The fair included pottery making, garland making, carpentry and basket weaving. The external people hosted the fair to demonstrate the importance of handmade crafts to the children. The skill of pottery making was exhibited on the spot by the craftsmen and they made mud pots, piggy banks, Dhiya’s which inspired the kids. The children enjoyed a lot and they also understood the hardwork of those people. They also showed interest in making it. The children from Pre- Kindergarten to Grade 12 were taken to view the fair and it was a feast for their eyes. The children enjoyed by trying potteries, basket weaving and garland making and carpentry. Children enjoyed the fair completely along with the takeaway about the importance of the traditional craft items that were made by them.

PRESERVE LIFE, PRESERVE EVERY DROP OF WATER!

As we cruise in a ship called ‘Life’ we come across many things we are unable to buy with money, no matter. One among such things is water. ‘Water’ needs to be valued not as a running liquid, but, as our very blood or our very life itself.

Science says our body is mostly filled with water and like our mother earth. When we do not maintain adequate water in our body, we end being sick. So would our mother earth, if we do not take adequate measures to save water for the future, to keep our Mother Earth hale and healthy.

Every drop of blood in our body is priceless. We need to take care, not to bleed when we cut our fingers with blade. Let’s all join together and start viewing water wastage as these blades and start to preserve blood called water to save our own lives and this Earth.

Indian government and several water resources census reveal that we need to take measures in terms of planning for region wise tanks, irrigation system, river basins, dams, village-wise dug wells, tube wells, surface lift schemes and surface flow schemes. The government is taking several measures nationwide, but, from an individual perspective what action(s) have we taken to save water?

Water body census reports that household water utilization is the area where we need to concentrate to minimize water wastage. It also highlights that more than 100 million people live with access to poor water quality. Others, who are blessed to live with good water quality, should realize the true worth and utilize water judiciously.

So, let’s all mark this moment and start acting to save every drop of water and water energy. Let us all start to be calculative by perceiving water to be ‘our blood’, ‘our money’ and start saving to see a better world tomorrow for our own well being and pass on a safe life for our upcoming generations.

Let us be conscious while using water at our home as a first step.

• Reduce time we take to shower, rather than spending hours showering and thus wasting water.

• Install low pressure shower system that saves water and energy.

• Close all taps, if you find any leaking water wastefully, take immediate plumbing measures.

• Re-use water. Explore concepts to use Grey Water (Water collected from baths for gardening or faucets etc.,)

• Water waste and Sewerage Water treatment facilities to be installed / enhanced.

• Ensure habitat conservation by minimizing human use of water so that water is preserved for use of birds, animals and other species.

• Avoid / Prevent water contamination caused by humans.

Secondly, we all should ensure to conserve water at a societal level in the following ways:

• Installation of water meters to measure water usage on day to day basis.

• Use water re-cycling shower.

• Create awareness for organizations by campaigning through environmental protection agency.

• Cities in dry climates should plan for installing natural landscaping.

Thirdly, it is evident to conserve water at business level where we can try to:

• Make employees use waterless

urinals

• Minimize car washes

• Sensor operated taps usage for cleaning

• Usage of cooling tower conductivity controllers

• Water saving sterilizers which save water by using steam

• Use of Rain water harvesting

• Evolving evaporation pan

Finally, we should ensure that the water usage in agricultural sector also should be minimized by:

• Install intelligent irrigation systems using water conservation methods available

• Use technological solution to eradicate the problems arising through improper drip irrigation system

• Treating water with sand filtration system

• Pathogen which causes human infection can be removed from re-cycled water which ensures high yield in agricultural sector

• Adopting appropriate irrigation system like flood irrigation, overhead irrigation and drip irrigation from time to time

Start practicing the same from home then at your school or institution or organizations that you are associated with. Share this piece of information with your friends, family, peers and strangers as well.

To ensure the above in our practical life, our normal senses alone is not enough, it requires you to become a bird that uses its sixth sense to land in the water by sensing the magnetic fields. We have a sense that is beyond the fifth one which we take names like hypnotism, telepathy and other

ways in which we feel the existence of sixth sense. Similarly, we should use our sixth sense in preserving our water usage and view water to be a precious one, more than one’s life. At times our senses have the ability to foresee a mis-happening and take precautionary steps. Like birds we should seek a way to eradicate the water wastage problems by pitching in our sixth sense. Using magnetic field to navigate the routes to ensure safe landing. Imagine that we are birds who want to land safely by preserving water for our generations and for ourselves too. Become an inclinometer of yourself and start weeding out the moments that lead to water wastage.

Taking an instance of TED talk delivered by Pranav Mistry- a PhD student at MIT has shared about the thrilling potential of sixth sense - technology. Likewise each of us have our own potential to foresee with our sixth sense and formulate innovative technologies that eradicate water wastage in our day to day life.

Say aloud ‘Save water as you would save your blood and money’.

Preserve the blood and money, today in your hand called water to enjoy a precious life of Tomorrow!

In this issue, let’s have an overview of USA Universities admission process…

When it comes to the USA, Universities follow a holistic approach in choosing students. They evaluate a student not only through academic criteria but also through their personal qualities and characters.

There are over 4000 Universities in the USA. Students apply to only a handful among them and then finalise on one. It is important that they find the right set of Universities through some serious research. Application process for USA Universities is done through the Common Application Process, which is otherwise known as “Common App”. The common application is a standardized online application form accepted by more than 517 Undergraduate Institutions and used by more than 800,000 students. Once completed, it can be

When would be the right time to apply?

Ideally, the process of applying for undergraduate study in the US begins 1-1 ½ years before enrolment. For most students, this is during the spring/summer at the end of Class 11. Students need not panic if their class 12 year has started and they are getting started with the application process. They simply need to work at a faster pace. Students should begin planning about their admissions almost 18 months before the US study year.

Students should

• Research various colleges and University programs to see which suits their academic and professional goals.

• And they should also register and prepare for TOEFL and SAT exams. Once the students get their SAT scores, they can shortlist the Universities which can be considered for application.

Application deadlines: There are certain deadlines for applications for the US universities. There are two ways of actions 1) Early decision 2) Early action.

Application Requirements:

1. Application form 2. Academic documents – Report cards 3. Test scores of IELTS/TOEFL,SAT etc.,4. Essays – Students are asked to their cultural

background, other life experiences, academic interests or other aims in an essay. Essays play a very important role in the admission process.

5. Letter of Recommendation Every US University requires at least 2 to 3 letters of recommendation, one from a Counsellor and the other two from the subject teachers.

6. School forms 7. Activities List 8. Other documents /requirements – Interview,

QMIS does not make boundaries for students with academics. They help in career building and inculcate valuable thoughts and ideas. One such step was the path session organized on 22nd July 2019 for graders 10 and 11 with Prof. Ramanujam Nedumaran, an experienced scholar with 35 years of rich teaching service at American College, Madurai. He briefed the importance of our mother tongue and how to master the language. He engaged the students with videos like “a music concert” to emphasize the value of happiness, a basketball game with “Stephen Cry” to inculcate the importance of practice. He made the session informative about passion, practice and change needed for life. He shared a few famous quotes to give a clear-cut idea about how students should be motivated towards their goal. In this interactive session, students actively participated in clarifying their queries regarding career choices. Further he briefed about the career as a teacher as being a blessing, which is, as colorful as the rainbow. He advised the gathering to take on life as a challenge against superstition and procrastination.

UNIVARIETY Keeping in mind the student’s career as an ultimate goal, the school has tied up with Univariety, since past 4 years, where they help in building up and strengthening the career of our students. The orientation was organized on 1st July 2019 at our school premises for both students as well as parents. WASTE MANAGEMENT “We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children”

QMIS actively involves kids of various levels for various International dimension activities. We strongly believe that children learn by example, so if they see you making wise, environmentally conscious decisions, they will be motivated. Keeping this in mind the GCC committee planned and conducted an activity on “Waste management” in the month of July for the students to create awareness about degradable and non degradable waste. Waste Segregation is important because: “If the waste is not separated properly, it gets mixed up and finally ends up in landfills.” Students of grade 3 were asked to bring dry and wet waste from home. An activity was conducted where they were provided with different bins and they had to segregate dry and wet waste. Organic waste such as kitchen waste, vegetables, flowers, leaves, fruits was put into wet waste. And wastes like paper, glass, metals and plastics were put into dry waste. Taking it to the next level graders of grade 4&5 were asked to create beautiful art made from waste projects which were displayed in their the classrooms. They came up with the best out of waste craft ideas which are suitable to reuse waste materials and decorate each household. An eye-

opening session on waste management was conducted by Ms. Gnanasundari. The emphasis on 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse &Recycle) was the key takeaway of this session. She educated the children that proper adherence of three R’s will reduce global warming and help save the environment. The children were enlightened with the thought that “They can save the environment by effective use and management of Waste”. We made them realize that everybody has a responsibility to leave our future generations a planet that is healthy and habitable by all species.

ENDANGERED FOREST SPECIESTo help the children get aware of endangered species and to make the planet a better place to live, an ISA activity on the endangered species was conducted for kindergarteners. This activity’s major focus was to enhance knowledge of endangered species in general. The students dressed up themselves like different endangered species and did a role play. They went around the campus to educate the other children to save animals and to plant more trees. It was a new learning experience for children and to exhibit their talents. The students were enthusiastic and did the activity with great spirit and enthusiasm.

SOMEWHERE UNDER THE SAME SKY! – NEW ZEALAND“Memories made together with family lasts LIFETIME”

Hello readers, here I’m happy to share our travel experience to New Zealand. Travelers around the globe often seek to find an off to disconnect from day to day activity and to have recreation. New Zealand is one such destination, words or pictures cannot do justice to the pristine beauty of this island nation. The landscape varies largely through the length and breadth of New Zealand raging from snow capped mountains in Queenstown. Spectacular middle earth and exclusive beaches in the north island were eye capturing one.

During the vacation in December, we chose to explore Rotorua popular for its geothermal activity. We began a 6 hour drive, early in the morning and reached around noon. We spent the evening relaxing and taking pictures at the side of Lake Rotorua. At night time, we went star gazing with dark clear skies that makes the view a breath taking experience. Both large and small clouds were visible to the naked eye. The next morning our first visit was to Wai-o-Tapu thermal wonderland, its prominent features are Lady Knox geyser, mud pool and geothermal park. Being a nature explorer we picked up a brochure and followed the directions on the map.

The unique geyser erupts to a height of about 20 meters every morning at 10:15 AM. We were stunned by this visual. We then moved to the Geothermal Park there we had to walk for 2 – 3 KM in a loop. The most popular feature is the Champagne pool. The Champagne pool is a vibrant hot bubbling one. Due to the efflux of carbon-

di-oxide it looks like a glass of champagne and hence the name. Exhausted after a long day in the sun we returned to our accommodation. The evening breeze was refreshing and we set out to visit redwood forest. The redwood tree walk and night lights were absolutely amazing. Anyone would probably love this place. Wooden suspension bridges were connected to one another; they took us around the forest. Night lights were hung on the giant trees which made a beautiful visual that was hard to forget. These Californian red woods are native to west coast of America.

We were awestruck when we looked at the largest tree in that habitat which was 72 meters tall and 162cm in diameter; they covered a wide area and served an eco system by itself. Next morning we moved back to Willington, and evening time was an unforgettable one that we would always recollect. Travelling around New Zealand not only gave us happiness but also inculcated many values in young minds. The first one was to respect all lives and protect nature. There was no reckless destruction of trees or natural habitat for the sake of expanding cities. When you travel, you drive in the moments rather than being glued to mobile or any electronic devices. It was also a wonderful opportunity to interact with travelers from across the globe. Travel also broadens the horizons and develops responsibilities and connects young minds towards nature and adventure. By sharing this with you I went back in the memory lane and cherished those days.

ICE STUPA Sharing an amazing fact and thrilled to present the “Ice Stupa”. Ice Stupa is a form of glacier grafting or glacier growing or artificial glaciations, which has been in practice since, at least the 19th century in the Hindu Kush and Himalayan ranges. The main idea behind this method is to create small new glaciers, to increase water supply for crops. These ice stupas are used to store water in the form of conical shaped ice heaps during the winter and during summer they melt and increase the supply of water, for growing crops.

Ice Stupa was invented by Sonam Wangchuk (often ascribed to be the inspiration behind the lead character in the movie Three Idiots), an Indian engineer, innovator and education reformist from Ladakh. He founded the SECMOL (Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh). The “Ice Stupa” project won the prestigious Rolex Awards for Enterprise.

The working principle behind the Ice Stupa is very simple. Water is directed from high altitudes through pipes and when it reaches the village it will rise up to 60m. It is made to fall from that height in cold Ladakhi nights when the temperature is as low as -30o to -50o C. The water starts freezing as it reaches the ground and starts to form a huge cone. The height of the pipe can be increased from the ground up and the water might be left to freeze from the ground up, thus forming the Ice Stupa. This has become a life line for the farmers who primarily had no solution to water shortage during summer. Now Sonam Wangchuk is planning on building fifty more ice stupas that could supply ten million litres of water each, a year, and irrigate twenty five acres of land.

“A drop of water is worth more than a sack of gold to a thirsty person.”

India, the second populous country where the wettest area in the world is located, then, why is India experiencing water shortage? Unfortunately, there is an ecological imbalance of water on the global scale, India is one of the eight countries which is facing a sharp increase in water crisis that threatens humans seriously. The most effective solutions to conserve water are Water Harvesting, Water-shed management and river interlinking. Roof-top harvesting is also an effective way of harvesting rainwater which enables people to economize water for upto 4-5 months.

Wouldn’t it be great to make a positive impact on others just by simply asking them to conserve water for the future?

Lishanth.S, Grade 8A.

“Water, Water everywhere, not a drop to drink”.

“Water”, the elixir of life, is limited. Water being a natural source, is essential to accelerate the economic and human development. So readers, the ultimate aim of describing the importance of water is to brief how to conserve water. Closing taps when not necessary, preventing the overflow of water, etc. Carelessness in the pipe – valve systems can lead to severe water shortage. Therefore, pipe connections must be checked and repaired if required on timely basis. The motor pump system that is utilized in nearly every home can be replaced with automated motor system. Implementation of these steps in every home will contribute to the conservation of water.

So readers, it is our turn, lets change the future with a small step….

“A birthday is a million moments, each holding a promise of fulfillment of their dreams and accomplishment of some special plans”

Every little one stepping into the school, is a new birth for kindergarten & to commemorate their new birth at school, our pre-kg children had their birthday celebration party as part of their curriculum. Classrooms were beautifully decorated with balloons, caps and welcome cards which attracted the growing buddies and added more charm to the occasion. All kids had their celebration with QMIS family by distributing cakes. The very first celebration taught the toddlers, our future leaders, the values of sharing, respect and hospitality.

“Worship is the believer’s response of all that they are – mind, emotions, will, body – to what God is and says and does.” -Warren Wiersbe

All religions have one common ideal, worship of the Lord and all of them proclaim in universality. The temple, the church and the mosque may be different from one another. The idol or the symbol in them may not be the same and the rites performed in them differ, whatever the faith, to understand, was the outcome of the visit.

“If we live in our oneness-heart, we will feel the essence of all religions which is the love of God. Forgiveness, compassion, tolerance, brotherhood and the feeling of oneness are the signs of a true religion.”-Sri Chinmoy.

“Senses empower limitations, senses expand vision within borders, and senses promote understanding through pleasure.”

Our senses are the route we explore the world and understand what is going on around us in terms of awareness. The kids were taught various activities that stimulate their senses and help the brain to develop and function at its peak.

The KG Team organized an activity “My Five Senses”, through which these kids acquired knowledge regarding the five senses - sight, smell, sound, taste, touch through hands-on experience, which in a way helped them to understand their body functioning. This activity was an exploration for the little minds, because they were able to discover some new and exciting things about their selves.

This activity helped the kids to understand what each of their senses did for them, and how the body part associated with each sense and is useful in everyday life.

Experiential learning builds a concrete future and we are sure this will manifest in our students’ life.

Getting all of the senses involved in learning is the ideal way to make well rounded, intelligent children.

The session wound up with a thought provoking question “Why can’t

we be better?” This got faculty members to introspect and analyze and thus understand the concepts of CIS Accreditation process.

“Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire”On the 17th of August, 2019, Our Managing Director – Mr. Abinath Chandran & Director Academics – Ms. Sujatha Guptan conducted a session on Case Study & Portfolio, where they educated the team on the need and importance of maintaining a student’s portfolio. It was introduced to 5 groups of faculties for presentation. It provoked the teachers’ mind on how to deal with such situations when presented with weakness, strength, diagnosis, analysis, remedial measures and its outcome.

Phonetic LearningQMIS had given a great opportunity for KG teachers to see a new phase in learning Phonetic sounds and its techniques. Ms.Gladys, one of our stake holder had come all way to guide us about the usage of phonic sound and teaching method of phonic sounds to our kg children. The session was started with an introduction about phonic rhyme and the need for it. Later the related words in the form of syllables were also explained elaborately. She also gave a new dimension of using diphthongs by playing videos which is very useful to implement in classrooms. The phonetics, phonic sounds for rhymes, syllables for better understanding among KG children. It would help to develop them an understanding as they find it interesting and learning becomes an interesting. Overall the teaching – learning becomes very impactful inside the classroom

INTRODUCTIONa) What is plagiarism, how do you identify it?

Replicating the good ideas of others by imbibing the values in it is called “Following”. But this copying has taken a toll since the inception of the internet. People have started copying others’ work or ideas without their consent and are using it in the work product which is termed as Plagiarism.

The concept of the Plagiarism is a peril to this generation of learners as the easy access to the knowledge and data in the Google bank is making our learners to take the short route of Ctrl C and Ctrl V.

With the huge classroom size in Indian scenario, it is challenging and time consuming task for a teacher to identify the plagiarism in the students’ products . It needs keen monitoring and constant follow ups. But teachers are the best persons to validate the originality of the content. Though there are many online tools available for teachers (like PlagiarismCheck.org) to check plagiarism, it can also be identified quickly at a glance by the teachers if the content is inappropriate to the level of the students.

b) State your views on plagiarism and why it is problematic.

Plagiarism has stolen the habit of reading and referring books, magazines and newspapers. Reading is gradually getting faded as the internet has become the commander and information provider for our entire search. Students generally plagiarize because of their lack of depth in language and knowledge, lack of confidence, reluctance, laziness and poor time management. It deprives the students from learning and it curtails one’s own thoughts and ideas.

DESCRIBE THE IDEAa. Why is plagiarism or copying an ethical issue? How do you convey this message to students?

Plagiarism is as equal to claim someone else’s delivered baby as yours. Any creation has always a history of hard work, effort, pain and sweat behind it. In such case, it is not fair to steal others’ hard worked creation. It is not only unethical but illegal. Plagiarism is considered as academic duplicity and violation of morale. It is otherwise known as copyright fraudulence. It is considered more as an act of stealing.

Consequences of plagiarism can range from suspension from a class to the state of getting debarred from the course and at times involves monetary repercussion. An

individual’s academic record will also reflect such act and it would have a huge impact in their admissions to Universities or higher studies. A person can even get sued to the act of fraudulence he or she involved in.

b. What skills do you need to develop in students to borrow someone else’s content ethically?

It is also essential for students to have an access to the knowledge bank available in the web portal but they should be educated well on using it wisely. A well defined academic practice has to be employed in the curriculum plan.

• Students’ independent reading, understanding, thinking and creative or original writing practice have to be inculcated.

• Students should be accountable for their own learning. They need to convert themselves from memorizers to problem-solvers.

• Students can be encouraged to paraphrase but should be cautious in drafting to avoid reflecting the original text or content at the same time to restore original text’s meaning.

• Content can be used with citation with the credit given to the original author. Have the author’s key words in italics or within quotation marks.

HOW DID YOU INITIATE / PROMOTE / IMPACT CHANGE?a. How do you deal with cheating in assignments, stealing and other ethical misbehavior?

Students should be made to understand that learning to reveal is more important than stealing others. Rather than being lenient I would advocate a clear plagiarism policy and educate them on the consequences.

Instead of letting them to err and

levying penalties later, support can be extended by the following means.

• Create a clear plagiarism policy at the school campus and ensure that all stake holders adheres to it.

• Provide plagiarism-proof topics. Go with the interest of the students also while selecting the project or assignment topic.

• Students tend to plagiarize when they lack subject and language competency hence level appropriate topics also should be practiced.

• Process of draft approvals should be practiced to ensure upon students contribution to the project.

• Allow the students to submit manual scripted drafts and reports indirectly this will improve their writing skills and language skills.

• Projects submissions should be followed by a viva voce to understand the originality in the paper presented.

b.What are the pros and cons of your method?

Plagiarism is like a plague in the academic career. Yes this unethical practice should be duly paid attention by having an impact on their grades. It is also suggested that instead of impacting them on their grades educate them on the nuance, ethics and consequences of Plagiarism. Though it is a time consuming affair in the long run it builds the students’ competency, self-confidence and impart the required ethical and judicial usage of others’ work throughout their lives.

FEEDBACK FROM STAKEHOLDERSWhat can education stakeholders do

to encourage the development of an ethical approach in students?

Having an end card to this issue is not just an individual’s responsibility but a collective. School, Teachers, Parents and Students altogether have to aim at it.

Schools should create their own digital citizenship policy including the consequences of the plagiarism. Schools can take an undertaking from the parents and students on honoring the intellectual property rights by not involving in plagiarism.

Faculties should plan appropriate due dates and action plan for collecting secondary and primary information, giving outlines, giving room for submitting rough drafts and this certainly curtails practices of plagiarism.

Students can write their own code of conduct which will foster more ownership in their learning.

Parents should be called for an orientation and insist upon deep monitoring of their children during project and assignment processing at home.

STATISTICS AND RESEARCHIn a survey of 24,000 students at 70 high schools, Donald McCabe (Rutgers University) found that 64 percent of students admitted to cheating on a test, 58 percent admitted to plagiarism and 95 percent said they participated in some form of cheating, whether it was on a test, plagiarism or copying homework.(Jun 7, 2017)

SUMMARYHandful of information today is available at the click of a button. Incidences of academic dishonesty reported among students, researchers and academicians .Many of the educational organizations are not

considering this as serious problem .It is very pathetic to observe that many students and teachers are not aware of the concept of plagiarism and they don’t teach the students how to cite the sources. They do not take plagiarism as a matter of fraudulence. But the society is in need of more original thinkers. Who takes responsibility in building these ethics in our children? Is quoting inputs of others against law? If so how do we educate the children on the ethics of plagiarism?

‘TRY IT OUT’ SECTION1. Schools should create their

own digital citizenship policy including the consequences of the plagiarism . Schools can take an undertaking from the parents and students on honoring the intellectual property rights by not involving in plagiarism.

2. Training the teachers on how to set assignment for the children

3. Orienting all stake holders on the hazards of plagiarism

AGARAM - JAPANESE

When it comes to latest technology, Japan immediately comes to mind. Japan faces lot more national disasters than other countries, which make them focus on conservation of natural resources which has become a social responsibility. Not only this, being an island nation, they have far more limited resources than other nations have been blessed. Hence as a society and nation they are more responsible and innovative in their actions.

At their homes, Japanese people have built an efficient system for bathrooms, that has multipurpose gadgets and innovations that help conserving water and time. A smart way to reuse the bathtub water is adopted in Japan. Bathtubs require a lot of water, which shouldn’t be wasted. Before taking a long comfortable bath in the bathtub they clean themselves with a water spray. They also put a water disinfectant in the tub. This way the water in the tub will stay clean and it could be used by another person. As the water in the bathtub is still clean it can be reused to do laundry. They enclose a tube that sucks the water from the bathtub into the washing machine. Another cool thing about Japanese toilets is the little faucet at the top of the cistern. After every flush the cistern fills up with clean water, right? It is such a waste to just flush it away the next time, Instead you might as well wash your hands with it before it goes in, instead of using a separate volume of water for that purpose. This idea has slowly made its way into toilets all around the world. Bathrooms in Japan are used by the people for different purposes simultaneously. The people have an amazing architectural sense allowing them to maximize space utilization and save time. A control panel which is set to set the right temperature is fixed both in the bathroom and the kitchen. Japan’s washing machine and dishwashers are examples for using very less water and thus conserve it. Thus Japan and Japanese thoughtfully focus on conservation of natural resources, importantly water. Japan’s high population density makes clean water a commodity to use wisely.

AGARAM - FRENCHLa Conservation de l’eau en France

Among the various sustainable development goals “Clean Water and Sanitation” is an important one. Nowadays water scarcity is one of the biggest problem faced by the people all over the world. It’s time to take measures to protect the world from water scarcity. As an initiative , the QMIS school magazine “Yagna” has chosen the theme “Water Conservation” for the year 2019-2020. This article “La Conservation de l’eau en France” discusses in brief about the water supply system in France and talks in detail about the water conservation or Water Resource Management plan adopted by the French government. According to the Water Resource Management plan, France is divided into six large catchment areas [as shown in picture above] in which were created six water agencies [the public companies of the State] to carry out water management at the river basin level. This article reviews the functioning of these six water agencies, their objectives and how successfully they help in protecting water resources of France.

In France, Water supply in towns and villages comes under the responsibility of Municipality [La Mairie]. The Municipality often sub-contracts water supply and/or sanitation services to the private sector through long-term lease/contracts. The private sector companies namely Ondeo, Groupe Ruas and Generale des Eaux etc. supply water to the people in different areas. People cannot choose a company of their own for supplying water to them. It is the work of the municipality to assign a provider [private sector company] to each area for this activity.

Water Resource Management and water conservation in France was enhanced in the year 1964 by the establishment of water law. At that time, they created the six Water Agencies to carry out water management, at the river basin level. The six Water Agencies are : Adour-Garonne, Artois-Picardie, Loire-Bretagne, Rhin-Meuse, Rhône Méditerranée Corse, Seine-Normandie. These Water Agencies, which are public institutions of the State, are the operators of the water policy on the large basins. The water agencies implement the objectives and provisions of the Water Development and Management Master Plans (SDAGE, French management plans of the Water Framework Directive), by fostering well-balanced, efficient management of water and of the aquatic environment, drinking water supply, flow regulation and the sustainable development of economic activities. They are also responsible for improving water quality and they work with the ultimate objective of achieving good water status. Let us discuss the objectives of the Water Agencies.

The major objectives of the Water Agencies for the achievement of good water status.

• Reduce polluting discharges from all sources.• Guaranteeing water quality.• Fostering the sustainable development of the

economic activities that use water.• Protecting and rehabilitating aquatic environments

and wetlands.• Regulating water flows [natural flood areas and river

maintenance]• Furthering urban-rural solidarity with respect to

waste water treatment and drinking water.• Promoting humanitarian solidarity and international

cooperation.• Informing the general public and raising the

awareness of the public and of schoolchildren about managing and sustainably protecting water and the aquatic environments.

The Water Agencies’ funding comes from the fees collected from water users, such as consumers and businesses. These environmental tax revenues amount at present to roughly €1.8 billion a year. The water policy implemented by the water agencies has had a positive environmental impact. Currently, 41 percent of natural waters in France have achieved a water quality status of “good” or “very good”. The French Water Agencies are internationally recognised as providing an effective water management structure. In 2000, the EU [European Union] created its river basin district model on the lines of the French model

To keep the body in good health is a duty…. Otherwise we shall not be able to keep our Mind strong and clear - BuddhaKeeping this great thought in mind we at QMIS organize health camps twice a year. As per our schedule, this year also we started with the same. First checkup was organized by our HSC team on 16th and 17th of July. A panel of General Physicians from Meenakshi Mission hospital, Team of Dentists from Twinkler dental care and Sri Sai VS Dental clinic, and a group of Ophthalmologists from Vasan Eye care also came for the check up. “A mini master health check is a comprehensive screening As a preventive measure for health care.” Everybody on campus was benefited as part of this camp. A report of the Students’ health was prepared by individual doctors and handed over to the Class mentors for further investigations if necessary.

“A healthy life style Not only changes your body Its changes your mind, attitude and mood.” To reiterate such strong thoughts, we had a session with Mr. Bharath our HSC head on 06th of July to imbibe the values of healthy lifestyle. Mr. Murugan accompanied and shared about yoga and warm up activities. Mr. Bharath counselled us to utilize our PE classes effectively. Ms. Shajitha shared a few tips to ensure a healthy mind and to enhance interpersonal relationship by avoiding food order through Zomato and Swiggy, instead request a friend to bring food at times of such emergencies.Ms. Kayal shared some health tips to keep our body fit and fine. She also shared recipes to keep young. She asked us to replace rice with wheat and millet cereals. The session was very interactive with good learning. As adults we know everything but session like this was an eye opener for working women to concentrate not only about the family but also on self.

QMIS has conglomerated with an internationally renowned organization called Tie-Upp for training our Nadals and Serenas professionally and impart intrinsic traits in them to face the futuristic challenges in the game.

It is through them, our student journalists got an opportunity to interact with Mr RubenNeyens, an expert in futuristic developments of the game, who trains many young players. He travels a lot, throughout the globe, loves his job in seeding the game wherever he goes. He stands as a perfect synonym of one who ‘walks the talk’ and has brought up talents in the younger generation by providing the missing link in them, which hitherto helped them in reaching the pinnacle of their abilities. Here are some excerpts of the interview in which Swathi and Varun posed challenging questions

have to develop it”. It takes days, weeks, months, years and it is a step-by-step process. It’s not like you immediately win. Moreover, it takes patience and perseverance.

Varun: Do you like any other sports other than Tennis sir?

Mr. Ruben: I am more of a running guy that is something completely different from tennis. Tennis is a really easy and simple sport. You don’t have to think and make decisions, it’s really simple.]

Swathi: What are the various skill sets that every player requires sir?

Mr. Ruben: In tennis you need to have good hand-eye coordination. For example: if there is an incoming ball, we need to estimate where it is going to bounce and our body should be flexible. Technically we have to be really skillful.

JUNIOR JOURNALIST Mr.Ruben Neyens, International Tennis Coach

and his candid responses to them.

Varun: Good morning sir. What do you feel about India and how do you feel about training kids?

Mr. Ruben: I love training kids… be it Europe, China or India. Training kids makes me feel young!

Varun: Are you satisfied to play tennis?

Mr. Ruben: Well, I like to move, I like to play games where you have to prepare your brain and making decisions and also when you are with people, you can challenge yourself, your body and your abilities so that you can go to a higher level.

Swathi: What are the difficulties you faced to reach this position / place sir?

Mr. Ruben: Being an educator or a coach, it takes time. I always say, “You cannot study experience, you

Page 39: FRONT PAGE · MYSTERIOUS DISEASE KILLING DOGS IN NORWAY Norwegian authorities haven’t been able to detect the cause behind an unexplained disease that is estimated to have killed

Varun: What are the qualities that you expect in students sir?

Mr. Ruben: Firstly, I ask my students to have good attitude that is if they are ready to learn and help each other out. Secondly, they should actively participate by asking questions and get information so that they go with the flow of the session.

Swathi: Sir, with your heavy schedule, how do you organize, plan and prioritize your work?

Mr. Ruben: It’s not easy! When you play a tournament, you will never know when you will win or lose. You have to organize your sessions and have a roadmap or a schedule and you also have to have the ability to adapt anywhere.

Varun: Do you suggest any diet plans for your student’s sir?

Mr. Ruben: First of all it is important that they have 3 meals a day because there are some teenagers who don’t have their breakfast before sessions. Secondly, it is important that they drink a lot of water because it helps in the digestion of food.

Swathi: Why did you select the students of age 8-12 to train sir?

Mr. Ruben: It is mostly because they are young and have the willingness to learn something new. Moreover, they show a good attitude as a person and moreover, the parents are free to ask me questions.

Varun: So, what do you think are the basic necessities of becoming a sportsman sir?

Mr. Ruben: The thing is that anyone can become a sports person because everyone has the basic body and they can push and pull and stay healthy. Everyone can do their own level of sports. It can even be walking. You just have to get enough number of

steps. It doesn’t always have to be a shocking, world-class level sport. It’s important that it’s just integrated in your system.

Ms. Haritha: Sir I have a question for you. I heard that this is your first time in India to train our children and I have seen young children going to play tennis. I just want to know how you manage them.

Mr. Ruben: You need a lot of patience because tennis is a new system for them, a new form of communication and they need time to adapt to it. You need to explain it to them with simpler and smaller words. Most importantly, you cannot lose your temper because everything is new to them.

Varun and Swathi: Thank you sir.

Thus the students gained a great experience of having interviewed a great sports personality which in turn gave them the great in depth of the sport

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on July 7, 1981 at Ranchi, Jharkhand to Pan Singh and Devaki Devi. He studied at the DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir School in Shyamali, Ranchi. Initially during his school days, he used to play badminton and football. In fact he was the goalkeeper of his football team. Once he was sent by his football master to play cricket for a local cricket club. It was in this match that he impressed everyone with his wicket keeping skills which resulted in getting him a regular role, that of the wicketkeeper at the Commando Cricket Club (1995- 1998). He was picked up for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship, where he performed well. Dhoni focused on cricket after passing his 10th standard.

From 2001- 2003, he worked as a Travelling (Train) Ticket Examiner at the Kharagpur Railway Station under South East Railways in Midnapore. Dhoni used to get frustrated with his job. Apart from being a ticket collector he used to play tennis ball cricket with his friends. Dhoni went for cricket practice after completing his work every day. He was a train ticket collector in Kharagpur railway station which had big platforms. Sometimes, he had to run from one platform to another platform which made him frustrated. Unlike other ticket collectors, Dhoni was not provided a separate table. Dhoni began his cricket career in 1998 by playing for Bihar U-19 team. He also played for East Zone U-19 for the CK Nayudu Trophy team in 1999-2000. He made a debut for Bihar in the Ranji Trophy. He started gaining recognition for his lower order contribution as well as for his hard hitting batting style. Dhoni’s talent was recognized via BCCI’s small town talent- spotting initiative Talent Resource Development Wing. Then he was selected for the India ’A’ squad for a tour of Zimbabwe. He was then selected to

play for the Indian Cricket Team, where he made his ODI debut against Bangladesh. His sterling performances with the bat have rescued India from many tight situations. But seeing tears in his eyes during World Cup 2019, made the Indian fans to cry out for their star performer.

He is also the captain of Chennai Super Kings in IPL. Under his captaincy the team has won three titles and has entered into playoffs every season. In fact, CSK is the only team that has entered the playoffs every season. During World Cup 2015, Dhoni was not with his wife when Ziva, his daughter was born. Dhoni stepped down as captain of India in the limited over formats in January 2017. He is the only captain to have won all ICC Trophies. He has been a recipient of many awards, including the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Rathna Award, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri. The Indian Territorial Army conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel to Dhoni on 01 November 2011.
