It's Another Week of Exciting Events coming up at CTK!

Today we have celebrated Science Week with a number of different activities across the school. Ask your children about the fun they had today and some of the interesting things that they have learned. Next Monday night commencing at 6pm is the P&F meeting for this term. This is an opportunity to hear about parent involvement in our school. The meeting is short and succinct. Come along and support our wonderful team who work so hard to provide resources for this great school. Tuesday September 30 is Photo Day. A great day of smiles, freshly washed and ironed uniforms and polished shoes! It’s Book Week next week and we’re celebrating the importance of reading and promoting children's enjoyment of books with displays and activities in the library and classrooms. Come and join us on Friday September 2 when we celebrate with a variety of Book Week Activities.

BCE Strategic Planning

On Monday, I attended a Principal’s Forum of all Brisbane Catholic Education Schools. The new Strategic Plan for 2017-2020 was launched. The directions for our school hinge on those set by Brisbane Catholic Education. As such, I believe that it is important for you to be very well informed of the Strategic Plan which can be located on our school website, under curriculum – strategic renewal or by the following link http://www.ctk.qld.edu.au/curriculum/Annual%20Reporting/Documents/BCE%20StrategicPlan_2017_2020.pdf

We have had a report of a child who has been diagnosed with Influenza B in our school. Please be aware of children who are feeling unwell and give them time to recover at home.

May God’s peace and blessings be with you during the coming week. Trudy

New Rules for Parenting

The world has undergone such rapid change that old parenting rules and mantras that may have served us well no longer seem to apply.

Let’s look at some old rules and see why they are not working and more importantly, what we can change so that our parenting is more effective.

OLD RULE 1 Cognitive ability (things like reasoning, problem solving, remembering) is the key to success.

When kids face success all the time, and we make life easy for kids we set them up for failure. When life gets tough they falter.

NEW RULE 1 Character strength as well as cognitive ability is the key to success. Character strengths such as grit, self-regulation and social intelligence will determine kids’ success. These character strengths are forged under hardship and duress.

OLD RULE 2 Self-esteem is the key to healthy development. Healthy self-esteem development has been central to children’s success over the past few decades. Somehow we’ve lost our way and gone overboard putting all sorts of strategies in place, such as removing the score board in children’s sport, to remove the threats to self-esteem. Protecting kids from such realities does them few favours.

NEW RULE 2 Self-awareness is the key to healthy self-esteem. Kids with high emotional intelligence have great self-awareness. They can recognise emotions. The have developed a language around emotion. Are they concerned, cautious, worried, fretting or feeling overwhelmed. When you can label your emotions you can then regulate them.

OLD RULE 3 Perfect is worth doing. Who has a low risk-taker in the family? Risk aversion is linked to perfectionism.

NEW RULE 3 Imperfect is ok. The work promoted by Carol Dweck and others, supported by science tells us that we need to develop growth mindset in kids. Intelligence is not fixed, but malleable. We can get smarter. There are many ways that our imperfect selves learn.

This is an extract from a special report, “New Rules for Parenting’ by Michael Grose.

CTK Science Week

Drones, Droids and Robots

At CTK Science week began with a bang! Jessica and Lachlan from Street Science took us on a mind blowing journey of scientific discovery. Our students witnessed fireballs, the effects of liquid nitrogen on differing materials with disastrous results for a rubber duck and a happier ending for a balloon puppy! We were also introduced to a 4FT Robot. Fantastic fire, super cool chemistry and a real robot educated and entertained us.

Today the science continues with a whole school focus on science. These shared learning experiences offer students opportunities to work collaboratively across a range of year levels with different teachers. Activities are hands-on requiring students to be problem solvers and reflective learners. Science activities include robotics, circuits, machines, gasses and chemistry.

Lots to talk about at dinner tonight!

Book Week

Keep an eye out for the form being sent home for parents to complete about their child’s choice of book week costume. This form will need to be returned to classroom teachers. Every child who registers their name goes in the draw to win a prize.

Parade

The annual Book Week parade will commence at 8:30am on Friday September 2. This year, in addition to a shorter parade, we will share some Australian literature in our Pastoral Care groups. I would like to invite parents to become storytellers and read some Aussie books to the children.
