High School Hosts Annual Senior Citizen Prom On Nov. 19, Susquehanna Township High School held its annual Senior Citizen Prom in the high school cafeteria. The 80 guests spent the afternoon dancing to Big Band music provided by Bill Perbetsky and the High School Jazz Band. Thirty-five students representing the National Honor Society, Student Government and Key Club helped set up the event, served the food and danced with the guests. The festivities included the crowning of a king and queen and awarding of door prizes.

Jim Auld and Gerry Meacham were crowned prom king and queen.

Everyone had so much fun that the band played well past the scheduled ending time. The event was open to all senior citizens residing in Susquehanna Township.

Curtains Open To HairsprayHairspray, the 2012 musical production of Susquehanna Township High School, opened March 1 and closed March 4. The play, about a young woman fulfilling her dreams of being on television, failing in love and seeing racial injustice eliminated, featured Bailey Howell (Tracy Turnblad), Connor Wallace (Link Larkin), Alaina McDonnell (Velma von Tussle), Kelsee Sweigard (Amber von Tussle), Elijah Jones (Seaweed Stubbs), Aiyana Holton (Motormouth Maybelle), Aidan Roth (Edna Turnblad), and Dorothy Nichter (Penny).

“The young men and women of the cast set this production apart,” said teacher and cast member William Burns. “Their focus and hard work throughout the process became evident as rehearsals wound down and the shows themselves began.”

The success of this production relied on the contributions of all the performers, technical and stage crew personnel, costumers, producers, and directors. Director Stuart Landon from Open Stage of Harrisburg provided a clear vision and guided his actors masterfully, always getting the best out of each. In addition, the choreography, directed by Angela Wise, gave the audience an extra sense of the 60’s style, and the vocals stood out under the direction of Amy Burghdorf.

Students Recognized For Outstanding Academics The following students were recognized as National Merit Finalists:

Left to right: Fatimata-Bin Abdulai Bukari, Natalie Kochanov, Krista Landis and Hannah Abele.

Mock Trial Team Wins District ChampionshipThree years after creating its mock trial team, Susquehanna Township High School bested back-to-back reigning champion Cumberland Valley to earn the title of 2012 District Champion.

The Mock Trial program, hosted by the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division, pits local school districts against each other in simulated court hearings. Schools are given case materials to analyze and create arguments. In competition, these arguments are performed in front of a jury comprised of practicing lawyers and presided over by practicing justices.

The team was comprised of six student lawyers and six student witnesses, who devoted countless hours of hard work, often times giving up their weekends

and holidays to develop their cases. The task of preparing for competition requires a scholastic aptitude of upper-level collegiate work.

“Our

ability to dominate the clock thanks to our freshmen witnesses’ knack for dragging out even the simplest responses, and the expert and inspiring performances from our upper-classmen lawyers put an end to Cumberland Valley’s dominance in this region,” said faculty advisor Jon Martindell.

Key Club Names STHS Student Lieutenant GovernorEthan Wayda, a junior at Susquehanna Township High School, was elected to serve as lieutenant governor of the 13 North Division of the Key Club. As lieutenant governor, Wayda is responsible for oversight of four to 16 high school Key Clubs, serving as a liaison between the clubs and the district board. He must visit each of their clubs, publish a monthly divisional newsletter and hold a monthly Divisional Council Meeting.

National Honor Society Inducts New Members Each fall, Susquehanna Township High School invites juniors and seniors with a cumulative GPA of at least 92.6 to join the National Honor Society (NHS). Applicants must be well rounded students who participate in multiple extracurricular activities, complete community service and demonstrate leadership skills. After induction, students help to organize and support community service events throughout the school year. Upcoming events sponsored by NHS include: Relay for Life (June); a blood drive (May); and a Mini-Thon including a dodgeball tournament (April 28).

Holtzman Computer Art Club Enhances Students’ Creativity Students are enhancing their creative skills in the Computer Art Club at Holtzman Elementary. The club is open to fourth- and fifth-graders who meet every Tuesday to create a variety of digitally enhanced works of art including magazine covers, CD covers, t-shirts and business cards. The club is sponsored by the Hanna Education Foundation and facilitated by Mrs. Lester and Ms. Ho.

Fourth-grade chess club members Kean Garner and Jarrad Smith enjoy some friendly competition.

Holtzman Chess Club Teaches Patience And Critical Thinking The Holtzman Elementary Chess Club is providing students with a fun, healthy and IQ-boosting after-school activity. The 31 members of this club are developing the patience and critical-thinking skills required to play the game. Studies have shown that children who employ the intellectual processes used in chess can benefit in other academic areas.

“Chess offers a wonderful diversion from the beeping, buzzing and flashing modern-day distractions that bombard our kids,” said club advisor Jeff McGaw, who started the club in 2011.

To get more parents and grandparents involved in the game, the club had a Chess 101 course for parents and guardians in February. Similar events will be held in the future. The chess club meets Mondays after school through the end of April.

Members of the chess club include: Ryan Beall, Liam Bechtel, Micah Enders Bidgood, Jakim Chatman, Jason Cole, Emily Decker, Damian Dimopoulos, Daegan Fuss, Kean Garner, Mau-rice Gentry, Nathaniel Ginck, Keil Heineman, Halim Joseph, Jameela Joseph, John Klinger, Xander Lee, Justin Pitassi, Jona-than Reeve, Jonas Robin, Anthony Rosito, Brayden Russ, Alex Shellhammer, Jarrad Smith, Madyson Smith, Markie Vellios, Darryl Watkins, Nicholas Watson, Alex Weinstock, Brandon Young, Quincy Young and Tucker Ziegler.

Holtzman Elementary has created a unique way to help students and parents prepare for the PSSA with the introduction of “Are you Smarter than a 5th grader?” The game is played similarly to the TV rendition, pitting a group of fifth-graders against parent volunteers. The questions are all based on material the students will encounter on the PSSA and in the classroom. Catego-ries include language arts, math, science and writing. Commercial breaks are taken during the game to share PSSA information such as test length, times and dates. This most recent game took place in November and had more than 200 people in attendance.
