From the Principal’s Notebook

Dear parents / carers and families,

Welcome to our first newsletter for Term Three. I trust you have enjoyed some quality family time over the recent school and show holiday period.

On Tuesday, seven teaching staff and five Leaders worked with our Regional Office Curriculum Coach to develop their expertise and deep understanding of the Australian Curricu-lum with a focus on the Humanities and Social Science learning area. I was more than impressed as I observed the professional conversations and the willingness to learn and improve demonstrated by our staff. Our knowledge of the curriculum and quality assessment will be a major focus for the semester.

Congratulations to Mrs Martina Leiter and her partner on the birth of their baby Felix on Tuesday 24th June. A warm welcome to our new Deputy, Mrs Belinda Everett. We also welcome back Mrs Sue Capel (4SC) from extended leave, Mr Nathan Canuto (5NC) and Mrs Maree Harris (Master Teacher) who have joined our FSS team.

Finally, thank you to families who supported our recent athletics carnivals and our 100 days of Prep celebrations.

Looking forward to another great term.

YEAR 2 - SAVE THE DATES

26th July Heritage Trail Walk

9th August Visit from the Historical Society

23rd August Excursion to Kuranda via Freshwater Rail and return via Skyrail

Year 2 students have a busy time ahead in Term 3. Parents will be further updated via email as the dates get closer. Parent helpers will be required for both the Excursion on 23rd August and the Heritage Trail walk.

YEAR 5 CAMP Late last term the Year 5 students embarked on their first school camp. The camp was held at Daradgee Educational Environmental Centre, north of Innisfail. Students were met with challenging and exciting activities during the four day camp and embraced these challenges by thinking creatively, working as a team and problem solving. A massive thank you goes out to our Parent Helpers who assisted on the camp; Richard Bonney, Scott Davis, Tammy Fysh, Matthew Downs and Kiley Drake. A big thank you is also extended to the staff of Daradgee Educational Environmental Centre and the FSS staff who planned and attended the camp. Please see below what camp was like through the eyes of our students:

Daradgee Camp by Charlotte Kendall As the Year 5 students trailed off the bus to pick up bags and to see their parents, excited crowds began to chatter;

“Camp was amazing!”, “The pizza was delicious”, “I completed the low ropes course!” It was safe to say that the

students had a blast at Daradgee Educational Environmental Centre, where the camp was held this year.

There was an array of different activities on offer, such as photography lessons, top ropes, farmyard and team building activities. My favourite activity was the Mohawk Walk, which was all about balance and working together as a team. There were no complaints about the food at camp! We had wood fired pizzas the first night, that were made by the students. A delicious lasagne was on the menu the second night and the beautiful meals kept coming, with macaroni and cheese, tacos and lot of different salads. With full bellies and weary feet the Year 5 campers wandered back to their cabins and quickly and quietly went to sleep….….sort of.

Camp Recount by Mitchell Ward On Tuesday (Day one) everybody arrived at school early to leave for camp. We were super excited even though the two hour bus drive was meant to be one and a half hours. When we arrived at Darragee we picked up our bags and found our cabins, then we reported to the canopy where we had a brief explanation about what was happening at camp, then we had our morning tea. After morning tea some of the students moved into the cabins and the other students made pizzas. Yummy sandwiches were given to us for lunch and after lunch we swapped so the group that was making pizzas moved in and vice versa. After that we had our afternoon tea and free time for showers. Next it was dinner time, the pizzas were absolutely delicious and for dessert we had ice-cream. We finished the first night with a disco, which had us all up and dancing. On Wednesday (Day two) we got up early for breakfast and had cereal, sausages and toast. After breakfast we got split up into our classes and did our set activities. First, our class did bouldering/ high ropes, which was extraordinarily exciting, and after lunch we did team challenges which was awesome fun. In team challenges we did stepping stones and mouse trap, with real mouse traps. Then there was afternoon tea, then free time. After free time we got called over for dinner where we had lasagne. Afterwards we did bush dancing with our new principal Mrs Jones. On Thursday (Day three) everyone was sad because it was our last full day and we were all so tired. We had cereal, bacon and eggs for breakfast. After breakfast we regrouped into our classes for activities. Our class was doing low ropes/Mohawk walk. After that was morning tea and then we continued with the same activity. Lunch was delicious hamburgers with homemade patties. In the afternoon we did photography and went over to the animal farm. Next, we had free time before dinner. For dinner we had macaroni and cheese and chicken. After dinner we watched a movie and then bed time. On Friday (last day) we woke up sad and tired because of all the hard work. Before breakfast everybody packed their bags and cleaned their rooms, and for breakfast there was cereal and pancakes. We then had an additional half an hour to clean our rooms. We then had a snake talk with a snake called Roxanne, a Coastal Carpet python. After the snake talk we had morning tea, and for lunch there was tacos and burritos, which were absolutely delicious. Lastly we had a debrief with the Daradgee Teachers and then boarded the bus for home. I think camp enthralled everyone!

BRISBANE SHOW CAMP SUCCESS – Ned Agnew Over the past three months, a number of our Year 6 students have been participating in an online writing competition. Students were required to complete a variety of assignments, while learning about how to write News style stories. Each year only 20 students from across Queensland are selected to be part of the Brisbane Show Camp.

Our school is very proud to announce that Ned Agnew has been successful and will fly to Brisbane in August for one week and attend the Brisbane Ekka, writing News stories about the event. I would also like to congratulate the other students who our school nominated and narrowly missed selection. They are Georgia McCarthy, Kelsey Smith, Stevie Moore and Bobbie Foord.

Well done to you all.

School commences each day at 8:45am

Recesses occur during the day:

The times and significance of bells rung during the school day are:

The first bell rings at 8:45am. Students should be at school by this time so they can prepare for the day’s lessons. Valuable learning time is lost when children regularly arrive late to school. If a student is late arriving they must go straight to the office and receive a late slip before proceeding to their class. As school start time is 8:45am, no formal supervision of the playground occurs before this time. If children arrive before 8:15am they must remain seated in the covered area. After 8:15am they may only participate in quiet, small group activities such as Reading Club in the library.
