CAN TWO CALCULATORS GET DIFFERENTANSWERS?

Mental arithmetic and an ability to estimateare important numeracy skills; however, appropriate use of technology is also veryimportant and is an assessable componentof our current curriculum. Calculators canbe an effective learning tool in mathematicsand can speed up mundane calculations, allowing students to focus on

understanding concepts, as well as freeing up time to work onauthentic problems.

The correct use of a calculator is a learned skill and theprocedure is different for various calculators. The exampleshows that a student can enter the same thing into a mobilephone calculator and Casio calculator and get differentanswers. Students are discouraged from using mobile phonesas a calculator because they are prohibited in exams, and canbe very distracting during the lesson. Students will have moreconfidence if they have practised using the calculator they willuse in the exam.

QCAA have published a list of the calculators approved forsenior examinations.

Our preferred calculator is the Sharp EL-531XH, which isavailable from our bookshop for $25.
