LISIEUX CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL, TORQUAY Dear members of the Lisieux community, “With our thoughts we create the world.” Do you ever wonder how our young people fit so much into their lives? 6 ½ hours of school 5 days per week; participation in sporting teams and clubs; community involvement; chores at home; socialisation; hobbies… And what about parents, most of whom have their own work or home responsibilities, and are responsible for commuting their children from one event to another, ensuring they are fed, their clothes washed, etc. Not only do they sometimes feel like they need their own Personal Assistant, but it can often become exhausting. Modern lives are “busy”, aren’t they? I have a personal dislike of the “busy” word. When we tell others and ourselves that we are “busy” (or “it’s crazy/hectic/ I haven’t had time to scratch myself, etc”), it seems to suggest that we are overwhelmed and spreading ourselves thin, that there is just too much to get done, and perhaps it can’t all be accomplished, at least not to the standard we might want to achieve. For those of us who are role models - and that is all of us, isn’t it - how we manage the pace of life can have a very real flow-on impact to those young people in our lives. If they constantly see us racing the clock and tapping our fingers to speed up whatever it is that we are hurrying to do, existing on not enough sleep to cram more in, surely we are reinforcing the glorification of a “busy” existence. I wonder if re-thinking and re-authoring that “busy” word might be a good beginning for not only a bit more sanity in our own lives, but a powerful way to encourage our children to slow down and be present to the people they are with, and what they are doing. The word “mindfulness” is getting a lot of press at the moment and it’s a word we use here at Lisieux on a daily basis. I find the concept of of “being present” in whatever task I am focused on, whatever person I am interacting with, a helpful way to consider mindfulness. It’s not so much about “managing time” but managing myself, because after all, we all have the same 24 hours in every day. It doesn’t mean that we have to do less, in fact with some time out for mindfulness or reflection, we might even achieve more, but it should mean that we will be empowered to allocate time for the important issues. And perhaps, on occasion, learning to say, “My focus is on this project right now so I won’t be able to…” is not such a bad thing. If you feel your life is getting “crazy busy” and you can see the same patterns emerging in the lives of the young people around you, maybe you’d like to jump on board in eliminating the “busy” word and replacing it with “being present” and focused on the things that are really important. LISIEUX CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL, TORQUAY

Dear members of the Lisieux community,

“With our thoughts we create the world.”

Do you ever wonder how our young people fit so much into their lives? 6 ½

hours of school 5 days per week; participation in sporting teams and clubs;

community involvement; chores at home; socialisation; hobbies… And what

about parents, most of whom have their own work or home responsibilities,

and are responsible for commuting their children from one event to another,

ensuring they are fed, their clothes washed, etc. Not only do they sometimes

feel like they need their own Personal Assistant, but it can often become

exhausting. Modern lives are “busy”, aren’t they?

I have a personal dislike of the “busy” word. When we tell others and

ourselves that we are “busy” (or “it’s crazy/hectic/ I haven’t had time to

scratch myself, etc”), it seems to suggest that we are overwhelmed and

spreading ourselves thin, that there is just too much to get done, and perhaps

it can’t all be accomplished, at least not to the standard we might want to

achieve. For those of us who are role models - and that is all of us, isn’t it -

how we manage the pace of life can have a very real flow-on impact to

those young people in our lives. If they constantly see us racing the clock

and tapping our fingers to speed up whatever it is that we are hurrying to do,

existing on not enough sleep to cram more in, surely we are reinforcing the

glorification of a “busy” existence. I wonder if re-thinking and re-authoring

that “busy” word might be a good beginning for not only a bit more sanity

in our own lives, but a powerful way to encourage our children to slow

down and be present to the people they are with, and what they are doing.

The word “mindfulness” is getting a lot of press at the moment and it’s a

word we use here at Lisieux on a daily basis. I find the concept of of “being

present” in whatever task I am focused on, whatever person I am interacting

with, a helpful way to consider mindfulness. It’s not so much about

“managing time” but managing myself, because after all, we all have the

same 24 hours in every day. It doesn’t mean that we have to do less, in fact

with some time out for mindfulness or reflection, we might even achieve

more, but it should mean that we will be empowered to allocate time for the

important issues. And perhaps, on occasion, learning to say, “My focus is on

this project right now so I won’t be able to…” is not such a bad thing.

If you feel your life is getting “crazy busy” and you can see the same

patterns emerging in the lives of the young people around you, maybe you’d

like to jump on board in eliminating the “busy” word and replacing it with

“being present” and focused on the things that are really important.

Mavis

Having Mavis as part of our Lisieux family for the past 2-3 months has been a very special experience. The staff

and students have thoroughly enjoyed our interactions with her, and many have shared the responsibility of

caring for her needs. Efforts have been made to teach her to walk on a lead, and the children have had

opportunities to socialise with her. Now that Mavis is bigger and stronger, we have decided that a more

permanent home where she can have freedom to roam more widely, is best for her wellbeing. We are very

grateful to the Rogers family (Nate, Carmel Blue) who have offered to accommodate her on their property.

Mavis will be relocated to her new forever-home later this week. We will farewell her and keep up to date with

her progress. Her pen will be redesigned to accommodate more chickens and possibly some other birds. Thanks

to all who have welcomed and helped to care for Mavis. She certainly has been ‘some pig’ at Lisieux.

God’s blessings for the week ahead,

Susan Ryan

PRAYER

Good St Francis,

You loved all of God’s creatures.

To you they were your brothers and sisters.

Help us to follow your example of treating every living

thing with kindness.

St Francis, Patron Saint of animals, watch over our loved

friends, our pets,

And keep our faithful companions safe and healthy. Amen.

SCHOOL TOURS: Professional Development for Staff

This term, our professional development focus for staff is being facilitated through tours to exemplar

schools within the state. Staff members have all chosen a school of interest and in small groups, will have a

day visit to the nominated school. In particular, we are visiting schools renowned for the following areas of

specialisation: Reggio Emilia approach; Project Based Learning; Collaborative Learning; STEAM;

Robotics; Garden projects, and other innovative areas. The schools being visited are St James, Sebastopol;

Christ the King, Newcomb; St John’s, Footscray; Wooranna Park Primary School. Our goals are that we

will be able to observe exemplary practices and then engage in reflective dialogue in order to review our

own practice and develop the most rich and relevant learning community for our own context. As a school

team, we are looking forward to participating in this form of learning and to using it as a springboard for

further planning.

New language: ne (verb) pas - Do not - When you say this in French you actually put the verb between the Do (Ne) and the Not (pas). For example: Tu ne parle pas - Translation: You do not speak. Pense - Think Finis - Finish Répète - Repeat Chuchote - Whisper Mange - Eat New phrases with recycled language: Tu commence/ Tu finis - You start/you finish. Je ne pense pas - I do not think. Tu ne dessine pas - You do not draw. Tout le monde ne commence pas - Everyone do not start. Madame ne va pas - Miss do not go. Monsieur ne regarde pas - Mr do not look. Tu ne joues pas avec moi - You do not play with me. Je ne travaille pas avec toi - I do not work with you.

NOMINATIONS for SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL

Currently, our Lisieux School Advisory Committee consists of 5 parent representatives, Parish

Priest, Principal and two staff representatives. They meet no more than twice per term and as a

council are members who appreciate, value and share the educational mission and ethos of the

Catholic Church. A range of school issues is discussed at each meeting, being a forum for discussion

on matters concerning education at Lisieux. If you believe you possess a skill set that would be of

value to the current Council, and could commit to evening meetings once or twice per term, please

collect a nomination form at Reception and consider nominating yourself or another member of our

community.
