This term on the school calendar is especially busy for our graduating Year 12 Students. It is a time when we acknowledge the academic and sporting achievements of our high performing students and celebrate the end of 12 years of schooling for our Year 12 Students. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the expectations I will be focusing on this term with the student body. The primary message to all students is that there is to be a relentless focus on learning which includes a focus on the completion of all assessment. The learning students undertake in any year level forms the basis for the next level of learning and is crucial to future success. The academic achievements of our Year 12s will have an immediate impact on their future choices whether it be further learning, an apprenticeship or work. Unemployment statistics for young people between 18 and 25 clearly show that students with Year 12 completion and/ or at least a certificate III level qualification have a much greater chance of being employed. For students to learn they must attend school. It is imperative that students are at school all day every day. Missing one day of school each week adds up to two months of school or at least 160, seventy minute lessons that are missed over a year. I have also focused on the behaviours I believe are important aids to successful learning. The first is to be at class on time ready to learn. Secondly students also need to be prepared with their resources – a book for each lesson, pens, pencils, a ruler and a calculator. Lastly students must support their learning and the learning of others by following their teachers’ instructions the first time. Parental support and community involvement also enhance student learning outcomes. Our school has close partnerships with many of our local businesses who offer work experience, traineeships and sometimes part-time employment to many of our students. We encourage parents to be involved in the education of their students and if they have concerns about their student’s learning to discuss it with the relevant staff person. If parents wish to see a staff member in person, please phone to make an appointment. When you arrive please come to Administration to sign in. School staff have a duty of care for our students. One way of ensuring their safety is to insist that any visitors to the school, including parents, either check in at reception or the student office if that is more appropriate. FROM THE PRINCIPALDear Parents and Caregivers

WALK AWAY AND CHILL OUT AS ONEPUNCH CAN KILL PRESENTATION

All the Year 12 Students were involved in ananti-violence presentation given by TheMathew Stanley Foundation in conjunctionwith Education Queensland.

The presentation allows students to heardirectly about the impact of violent assaultson victims and perpetrators, and encourages students to makesafe choices about their behaviour and that of their peers.

Paul Stanley (parent of a young person who passed away as aresult of senseless violence) was the presenter and delivered anemotionally charged and powerful message for all the studentsand teachers. The key theme was the promotion ofnon-violence and mutual respect among young people.

As our Year 12s move closer towards finishing their final year atschool, it is hoped that students make better decisions arounddealing with conflict and safer choices, while still enjoying the

festivities and special occasions marking the end of theirschooling.

TEEN MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AIDPRESENTATION (YEAR 11)

Goodna Community Health Centre are delivering a programto our Year 11 students this Term called Teen Mental HealthFirst Aid. The information presented will help students provideassistance to a person developing a mental health problem orin a mental health crisis until appropriate professional treatmentis received or until the crisis is resolved.

The objective of the program is to assist students in identifyingunderlying mental health issues that they themselves or theirpeers may be dealing with. Appropriate steps to support theirpeers or help themselves are addressed, to ensure thatstudents are able to seek help from the appropriate agency.

The school has organised for representatives from GoodnaCommunity Health to present this program in three lessonsto each Year 11 Access class throughout the Term. DeputyPrincipals, Deans, Guidance Officers, Senior Schoolingteachers, Liaison Officers and Year Coordinators have alsobeen trained to offer support to students at Redbank PlainsSHS.

All students who complete the course will receive a MentalHealth First Aid certificate in recognition of the training theyreceived.

UQ YOUNG ACHIEVERSMrs Belinda Walker was very proud to attend the UQ YoungAchievers Year 12 Graduation and Year 10 Induction Ceremonyon Wednesday night held at Bremer State High School.

UQ Young Achievers program provides scholarship funding andongoing support and mentoring from UQ students for studentsthrough their Years 11 to 12. With this comes the financialassistance of $1000 per year in Years 11 and 12 to assist witheducation costs. The program also provides funding of $7000for the Young Achievers during the duration of their selectedcourses at the University of Queensland.

The Year 12 graduating UQ Young Achievers were Tehana,Jack and Brandon. Newly inducted Year 10 UQ YoungAchievers were Tianna and Evvie.

The program aims to support the tertiary study and careeraspirations of senior secondary school students who might nototherwise have access to university as a post-school option.Broadly, the focus of the program is on nurturing anddeveloping the educational ambitions of participants throughmentoring, financial assistance and opportunities for personalgrowth and leadership development.

Congratulations to you all and we are all so proud of you all!

YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP CAMP 2016Leadership camp was an enthralling and memorableexperience that has opened the eyes and expanded the mindsof the future leaders of Redbank Plains State High School,and our community. This camp clearly was about leadershipskills in students and how and when to utilise these abilities.Throughout the camp experience, we participated in variousexciting activities that provoked leadership qualities in each ofus.

The first one I personally participated in was trust. During thisactivity we learnt about how important it is to trust and tomake someone feel trusted in a team. Activities like jumpingfrom the back of a Ute into the arms of peers really openedpeople up and created an understanding amongst teams onwhat everyone’s individual weaknesses and strengths were.

The leap of faith was another incredible experience we gotto enjoy with one another. During this activity we learnt thatsupporting your team mates with non-pressuringencouragement was the key to making them feel safe andrespected.

The next day my team completed the challenging ‘rescue me’activity. This involved building a raft out of minimal materials andrunning to our pretend airplane crash victim to place them onthe raft, and swim through a lagoon to safety. This was one ofthe most testing activities that involved an immense amount ofcooperation and trust amongst our teams.

During the afternoons all the students and teachers gatheredfor fun sessions that further taught key aspects about being agood leader. One important quote that stood out for me was,“to change the world, you must first change yourself”. Duringthese sessions it was also emphasised to us that to be a greatleader we need to find out what holds us back, and conquerit to reach our full potential. In between the activities with ourgroups, and discussions with the staff and students, we wereallowed free time to hang out with our friends.

Going to the beach was essentially free time, which gave thestudents time to have a bit of freedom and demonstrateresponsibility, to create bonds with numerous students theywouldn’t have been acquainted with before. Overall I believemyself, and all the students had an impeccable time atleadership camp 2016, and have taken home variousleadership skills that will not only advantage each individualstudent, but also set a great example to the rest of our schooland the community.

YEAR 10 HOME ECONOMICS STUDENTSYear 10 Home Economics students, mentored by Mrs FirozaJeevaji and assisted by Ms Kaitlin Loch (student teacher),participated in an Australia wide McCormick Flavour ForecastRecipe Challenge - 2016. The challenges were to trial anddevelop three original recipes based on themes chosen byMcCormick, using specified key ingredients and an allocatedbudget.

The three themes were-

Ancestral Flavours: Students were to deliver a sweet orsavoury dish that features two native Australian ingredients, anancient herb and an ancient grain.

Our Recipe Creation was- Native Spiced Kangaroo fillet withWild Rosella Relish, Quinoa- Macadamia and PomegranateStacked Salad and Native Pepperberry Bark (crispbreads)

Blends with Benefits: Students were to deliver a dish thatfeatures their own good-for-you blend made up of two of theset good-for-you ingredients, plus an additional herb and anadditional spice.

Our Recipe Creation was- Chia Crusted Salmon with MatchaGreen Tea Crème Fraiche, Pickled Dill, Asparagus Spears andCrispy Salmon Skin

Alternative Pulse Proteins: Students were to deliver a sweetdish (dessert, cake, muffin, slice, health bar etc.) that includesone or more pulse proteins.

Our Recipe Creation was - Spiced Chickpea Fudge Heartswith Mini Chickpea Meringue Stars, Roasted Split ChickpeaShards, Pomegranate Compote and Crushed Pistachio

WEEK 4 Student focus this week is .... I am inthe right place at the right time.

In connection with our student focus for week 4: I am in theright place at the right time – it is a great time to remindstudents to listen for the school bells and be on time to class.Students need to move to their class when the first bell sounds.They should be at their classroom, with their learning materialsready for when the second bell goes. If students leave class,they will be issued a green slip from their teacher. It is thestudent’s responsibility to ensure they are in the right placeat the right time; otherwise they will need to accept theconsequences given.

It is also that time of year where we need to review our processaround the management of phone use during class time. Theuse of mobile phones and other electronic devices such asiPods, MP3 players and other mini sound systems and pagersare restricted to before/after school and during lunch breakonly. This is to prevent disruption to the classroom learningenvironment and ensure that the good order and managementof the school continues.

Below is a reminder of the electronic device policy.

Student devices should be out of sight PRIOR to entering andduring classes. The responsibility of securing the devices is thestudent’s responsibility – no liability will be accepted by theschool in the event of the loss, theft or damage of any device.
