continued report from Susan Lee

DEAR CHESS FRIEND!This year it was an enormous challenge and at the same time a great joy to organize the 6th Global Chess Festival online. Instead of last year’s spectacular location at the Hungarian National Gallery, we created a virtual platform to reach out to everyone around the world with 50+ programs. We would like to thank you for connecting with us on the day of 10th October and in case you missed it, no worries! Due to great demand we have decided to share the most interesting talks and presentations that are now accessible from the official website GlobalChessFestival.com

Some highlights from the 6th Global Chess Festival online:

Champions Talk with world champions the legendary Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik; Goodwill Ambassador Talks with grandmasters: John Nunn, Simen Agdestein and the fascinating videos from the educational perspective: a sample Chess Playground lesson for children; life skills by teacher and psychologist Fernando Moreno; Chess Behind Bars by Carl Portman; Dessert with the Polgar Sisters hosted by Yasser Seirawan; and the Virtual Galleries

Keeping in mind the #ChessConnectsUs initiative and our vision of emphasizing the relation of sport, art, education, science and chess, we are already planning the next festival. Please help us with your ideas and let us know what kind of programs you would like to see online at the next Global Chess Festival.

END OF YEAR CONCERTStaff are commencing planning for the students to participate in our end of year concert. We know how much they love it and at this stage it will most likely be held during the school day. We are working developing links that will be available for our community to view the event as visitors unfortunately will not be permitted.

MELBOURNE CUP DAY TUESDAYTuesday November 3rd is a public holiday and as such children do not attend school. While we have no control over the occurrence of public holidays, we would like to continue to remind families that Every Day Counts. Children should attend school every day and birthdays and family events are not legitimate reasons for not attending school. Children who are celebrating a birthday on a school day are welcome to come to the office for a special card and birthday pencil.

BOOK WEEK

Book Week was particularly joyful this year as our children and staff celebrated the event in different ways. Thank you, parents and carers, for supporting the children with their books and costumes. We missed having our whole school parade this year but it was a happy day watching the children interacting with one another about their costumes and book characters during their breaks. Thanks to the committee for arranging the day and it was just what the children needed after being in lockdown for so long. Year level photos are on the following pages.

Have a great week ahead.Sue & Staff

4BW and 4KC: Online Excursion - Colonial Victoria

The State Library of Victoria have organised an online excursion, as most Victorian Schools have not been allowed to attend excursions due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The online excursion on Colonial Victoria, linked really well with our current Unit of Inquiry, “Relationship between people and society change overtime”.

Our students were engaged and challenged by tales from Victoria’s past and enriching their understanding of the present. They were given the opportunity to:

• Explore perspectives of significant Victorians from the past, linked to key objects from the Library’s collection.

• Examine the causes and effects of European settlement in Victoria

• Identify primary and secondary sources

• Explore how Melbourne has changed over time

4BW and 4KC: Online Excursion - Colonial Victoria

I learnt that a lot of historical events have happened in Victoria like the event of the Ned Kelly Gang. I also learnt about William Buckley, who was a prisoner who walked for 375km to escape where they had settled in Victoria. I also discovered that there were lots of people and historical events that have caused changes to the world. The online excursion told us how this happened and why it happened. When they were showing us pictures, they explained it in a lot of detail. I really did enjoy the online excursion.By Ibrahim

Today I enjoyed the online excursion and chats about the history of Victoria. I have learnt and discovered fascinating facts and information about a wide range of people, such as William Buckley and Ned Kelly. These individuals shaped our society, our culture and our identities as Victorians. A fun fact I have learnt is that people used to use barrels to take out the salt from ocean water to try and make it fresh, clean water for them to drink. However, this didn’t work. By Zana

The online excursion was so much fun and I learnt so many new things about the past and how people used to live back then. The hosts, Josh and Amy were very persuading and made it much more interesting from what it was actually like back then. Josh and Amy also asked us questions and then we would answer. I would understand everything that they would say. The online excursion was really good. We did miss out on our snack, but it was worth it!!!Lexi

During the online excursion, I learnt that there were many different people like aboriginals and Europeans, who took part in past events. There was a guy named Ned Kelly who was sent to prison for stealing a horse, however his friend actually stole the horse. I also learnt that William Buckley had walked for 375km which took him so many days, and that’s where he met an Aboriginal community and lived there for so

many years. I want to know why did William Buckley escape and how he ended up in Geelong. I really enjoyed listening to Josh and Amy. By Lamar

The online excursion we had was about the history of Victoria. It was by the Victorian State Library and the hosts were Josh and Amy. They showed us pictures and told us what Melbourne looked like a long, long time ago. They showed us what it looks like now. They also spoke about Ned Kelly and what his gang did and how they got in a big shoot out with the police. Josh and Amy also spoke to us about William Barrack, John Batman and Ned Kelly and a woman called Florence Ada Fuller. She was an artist and painted lots of paintings with her dad. She also opened a painting shop.I really learnt so much from Josh and Amy.By Zak

On the 26th of October, we took part in an online excursion, which was hosted by Josh and Amy from the State Library of Victoria. This was done using Zoom. We learnt about historical people and what they were famous for.The topics that we learned were about:• Ned Kelly• William Barack• William Buckley• Florence Ada Fuller• John Batman• Primary and Secondary resourcesClass 4BW has learnt so many new things about historical events and people. Our educators Amy and Josh were very prepared and told us they have over 5 million things about historical events and people in the Victoria State Library. If you get a chance to go to the Victoria State Library, you should take it you will learn so much more, that you would not know about! I really did enjoy the online excursionZoe 4BW

Skeleton Creek Mural Project!

In 2018 artist Richard Keville and James Frazer from Melbourne Water visited our school to hold a growling grass frog floor decal workshop for my then grade 4 students. Since then, Richard and I have shared many emails back and forth trying to make our next big project possible! It’s been a long time in the making but I’m thrilled to announce our collaborative mural project is currently in process with our current grade two visual art students! Richard has worked very hard to get council funding to make the Skeleton Creek Mural Project come to life! So, we thank Richard for his hard work and persistence in making this wondering project come to life!

Grade Two Involvement in the Mural Project

Grade two students are currently exploring their inquiry ‘Resources are important to all living things’ which explores ideas around living things, resource and our collective responsibility for our environment.

Grade two students who are currently undertaking visual arts this semester, were lucky enough to have a video chat with Richard last week! We learned about what Richard does as an artist and what kind of art he like to create. We also used this time to

respond to questions posed by Richard. The questions were about what native animals or creature students observe in their garden or natural surroundings (Key Concept: form), reflecting on what is special and unique about these areas and what the students can do to help protect and look after these natural landscapes (Key Concept: responsibility). For the last question, Richard wanted the students to use their imagination by writing or drawing a short story or poem about what they think has caused our environment to change over time. Richard will use some of the students’ textural responses in the mural project.

We hope that the mural project will be in production sometime in 2021 so stay tuned for more updates as the mural starts to come to life next year!

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Tania and Heather from the Arts, Culture & Heritage team at Hobsons Bay Council. As well as working for council, both are locals to Hobsons Bay and accomplished artists in their own right, I look forward to working with these ladies as well as Richard to put forward rich creative experience across curation, visual arts and education throughout 2021.

Rich Keville

I am a Melbourne based artist specialising in working creatively with text. Paint, ink, brush and roller are my primary creative vehicles: Phenomenology and Narrative the theoretical vantage points.

Preferring the urban environment to that of the gallery, I have marked and painted my way across the streets, train lines, abandoned buildings and in community settings throughout Australia, Asia and Europe.

My deep respect for traditional Chinese culture, philosophy and curiosity with pictographic writing styles led me in 2012 to spend a 3-month residency in China. There, I studied under the tutorage of artist and teacher Chen Yu Lian, daughter of renowned Chinese ink artist Chen Hong Fei.

Research interests and art projects in public space I am involved in usually engage themes focussed on environmental conservation, visual literacy and the aesthetics of written language using participatory and action research techniques.

I have trained in art therapy methods at the Melbourne Institute of Experiential and Creative Art Therapy (MIECAT), graduating with a Diploma in 2012 and in 2018 I completed a MA degree in Community Practice from Melbourne University.

Foundation – Year 2 Nature-based Artwork

During the last week of remote learning F-2 students had the opportunity to create some nature-based artworks inspired by the recognisable British artist Andy Goldsworthy.

During the last week of remote learning F-2 students were invited to create their own circular artworks inspired by the recognisable British artist Andy Goldsworthy.Students were asked to explore their natural landscape such as their garden, a nearby park or perhaps a special place like Skeleton Creek or a special place they love to visit or pass by.

Students needed to collect some items from their natural surroundings, such as a small amount of different plant leaves, flowers, bark, grass, tree nuts, twigs and rocks to create their nature-based artwork.

This engaging remote learning activity was given to us by Heather from the Arts, Culture & Heritage team at Hobsons Bay Council. She has plans to host an exhibition at the Seabrook Community Centre in 2021 where some of these wonderful creations will be on display! Stay tuned!

Winners of the Senior Drawing and Design Competition

First place

Artists: Zach 6JD and Elle 3FC

Hi, we decided to create some art together as our last home school project! We took it in turns drawing different creatures from our minds and colouring them in. It was Elle’s idea to do an underwater scene where sea creatures were borrowing books from an octopus librarian, but each of us came up with the individual characters and Zach came up with all the different book titles. We hope you enjoy our curious sea creatures and their wild minds!

Second Place

Artist: Annika 5RB

This is a drawing of a different universe accessible by a blackhole/wormhole. As soon as you enter the blackhole you see a wormhole which leads to a different universe with weird technology and creatures that is totally different from our solar system.

Third Place

Artist: Nicole 4MB

I hope you guys enjoy it!

My artist statement about this art: When I thought about the theme, I drew a few imaginative creatures that I thought would fit in well with the theme and I drew some keywords to go with them.

For the colour I used a pattern of emotional colour and under the topic emotional, comes curious, happy, wonderings, adventurous, sad, angry and we have all sorts of feelings and emotions. So that’s what inspired me to make this art.

Thank Your Cleaner Day Colouring Competition, Monday 9th of November It’s a day where we stop to say ‘thank you!’ to the hard working people who clean our school, parks, playgrounds, shopping centers and all the places you enjoy. What would the world be like without cleaners? Messy that’s for sure. Also unclean, unhygienic and unsafe! Cleaners are often ‘unsung heroes’ but their work is very important. Cleaners have been even busier in 2020 to keep things santitised and disinfected to fight COVID-19.

ISS is a big cleaning company and they are happy to clean our school! They hope we will help them say ‘thank you’ to our hard working cleaners, by taking part in the Thank Your Cleaner Day Colouring Competition, with some prizes up for grabs!

Entries close on Monday 9th of November with winners to be announced later that same day!

Will send out the below colouring competition with this bulletin.

EligibilityThe final eligibility date for CSEF in 2020 has been extended from 14 April until 5 October 2020.

Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or temporary foster parents are eligible to apply. The normal special consideration arrangements continue in addition.

Payments will be made at 50 per cent of the standard per student rates for families eligible between 15 April and 5 October 2020.

Process changesApplications must be submitted through the CSEF system by 27 November 2020.

CSEF usage is normally restricted to camps, sports and excursions activities. As there is limited opportunity to undertake these activities this year, it was announced in term 2 that CSEF could be used for technology devices and internet access.

CSEF usage has now been expanded further to include voluntary school charges, books and stationery. It may not be used for school uniforms, before/after school care, music lessons, formals/graduations or compulsory fees.
