children without exception. Children in our school have a very clear understanding of the expectations regarding their behaviour and we are often congratulated for the excellent respectful and courteous behaviour that they demonstrate each day. This year, in response to the State Government’s address of violence in schools, some amendments in regard to ‘Good Standing’ and suspension/exclusion have been made to the school’s Behaviour Management Policy which was approved by the School Board last term. A copy of the Behaviour Policy is available on the school website or can be obtained from the school administration. School Board At last week’s Assembly, Mrs Joelle Greenway, Chair of the School Board, presented our first School Board Awards for 2019 to Mrs Linda Stanley, Education Assistant, for her outstanding contribution to the teaching and learning in our school, and to Mrs Hannah Valance for her outstanding contribution as a parent volunteer. Congratulations to both Mrs Stanley and Mrs Valance. Thank you also to everyone who took the time to submit a nomination. The School Board greatly appreciated the wonderful responses. Mrs Greenway also announced our new Parent Representative to the School Board: Mrs Shannon Foster. Mrs Foster has a wide range of skills and experience through her working career and is looking forward to helping the school achieve its business goals.

Wishing all Mums a wonderful Mother’s Day

this Sunday.

Student Health and Welfare

Within our school population, we have a number of students with medical conditions. Some of these require short term intervention, such as administration of medication for a set period of time, whilst others require more comprehensive ongoing medical plans. Parents should ensure that all information regarding ongoing medical issues are:

∗ Fully documented on enrolment form and entered on the schools information system.

∗ If changes are required, inform the school office immediately and ensure that information is changed on child’s information.

∗ Make an appointment with a Deputy Principal to discuss the issues and care plans required for your child at school.

∗ Complete the paperwork provided by the school and have that signed by a medical practitioner promptly as requested.

∗ Return all paperwork to the school to ensure that we have all of the required information.

∗ The Administration will inform classroom teachers of any actions required

Keeping your kids safe in the car!Keeping your kids safe in the car!Keeping your kids safe in the car!Keeping your kids safe in the car! Did you know that every child under 7 years must be seated in a child car restraint or booster seat when travelling in a motor vehicle in Western Australia? ∗ Children from birth to under 6 months must be

seated in a properly fastened and adjusted, rear facing approved child restraint.

∗ Children from 6 months to under 4 years must be seated in a properly fastened and adjusted, rear facing or forward-facing approved child restraint with an in-built harness.

∗ Children from 4 years to under 7 years must be seated in a properly fastened and adjusted, forward facing approved child restraint with an in-built harness or an approved booster seat with a lap-sash seatbelt.

∗ Children 7 years and over must be restrained in an adult seatbelt or booster seat.

Where are children allowed to sit? ∗ If a car has two or more rows of seats, children

under 4 years must not travel in the front seat. ∗ If all of the rear seats are being used by children

under 7 years, children aged 4 years to under 7 years may travel in the front seat, provided they use an approved booster seat.

Some important things to talk about with your child. ∗ Why they have to sit in the correct restraint for

their size and always buckle up. ∗ Why they are safer sitting in the back seat. (The

back seat is safer than the front seat in a front impact crash, which is the most common type of crash.)

the Council about installing a bin at the pedestrian bridge behind Aldi/7-11. I made this request as I had been picking up rubbish there since October 2018 and the flow of litter never seemed to cease. Every two to three weeks, I would go out with my family to pick up rubbish. Each trip we could easily fill 4-5 regular sized buckets with 7-11 Slurpee cups, lids and straws, receipts and take away food cartons. My family and I had gotten sick and tired of seeing all this waste, so we decided to do something about it. Before the meeting, I met with Mayor of the Shire of Kalamunda and had a photo with him.

Hygiene

As the colder weather sets in, it is important that the school community continues to follow personal hygiene procedures to reduce the rate of illness around the school. If students are displaying any symptoms of being unwell, parents are advised to speak to their general practitioner. The school promotes and encourages students to wash their hands regularly throughout the day to minimise the spread of germs.

NAPLAN

Next week, our Year 3 and Year 5 students will complete the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Children in these two year levels will complete tests in spelling, grammar and punctuation, writing, reading and mathematics. The results of these tests will be made available to parents later in the year. Progress in literacy and numeracy, however, is not merely measured at these two year levels. Literacy and Numeracy development is a whole school responsibility with students in each year level expected to achieve a year level standard. At our school, student progress in literacy and numeracy is monitored at all year levels from Kindergarten – Year 6 through our School Standards. Parents can support their children in literacy and numeracy through ensuring that their children read every day and practise basic skills in both English and Maths to ensure their long term retention. Our school’s planned testing schedule is as follows:

LukeLukeLukeLuke Hello, my name is Luke. I am a proud student at Wattle Grove Primary School and my fabulous teacher is Mrs Lowther. My parents are of Indian origin, however, I was born in Australia. I have a sister (Year 2) who comes to this amazing school as well. I have been at Wattle Grove Primary for seven years, this year being my eighth and last. I love playing sports. I have been professionally training in badminton for over two years. I used to play soccer for a year and did swimming since I was six months old. In my leisure time I normally draw. I like to draw copies of real-life things. I am greatly honoured that my design was selected as the Year 6 leavers T-shirt design. The thing that I like about this school is the friendly teachers. I like the way everyone works together because it helps us all get our work done. In my time as a Student Representative, I would love to encourage the school to do more physical activity. I think we should do more activities such as a Fun Run where we can keep fit and raise money.

OliverOliverOliverOliver My name is Oliver, I’m 11 years old. I have only one older brother (he is an adult now). I was born in Perth, Australia and have lived here ever since. My family originates from Poland and I sometimes visit there (the last time I went to Poland was four years ago). I love playing on my computer and playing video games with my friends. I am curious how technology will advance in the future. My favourite subjects are Science and Technology. I am also in the Guitar Program. A few things that I really like about this school are the events and fun things you can do during events (dress up days, random events, it’s all so fun!). I also like how the teachers always try to help me do my work and don’t expect me to know everything. Some things I will do as a Student Representative in this school are; organise events and activities during lunch and/or recess, help everyone deal with their playground problems and to stop anyone from doing the wrong thing.

SharonSharonSharonSharon I have been a proud student of Wattle Grove for the past eight years. I was born in Africa, Nigeria like my older sister, Isioma. I enjoy Athletics and I am a member of the Forrestfield Little Athletics team. I enjoy attending Wattle Grove because of the high standards and friendly community here. We keep up to date with technology and also help numerous charities. The helpful and kind staff are always there to help us with our work and out and about in the school grounds. As a Student Representative, I am willing to spend my personal time to help everyone around the school, no matter race or culture. I will get the job done, no matter how hard, this is because once I put on that badge your time is more important than my time. I have a strong reliable voice and I will always speak up for those whose voice is not so loud. I will serve as a responsible role model for all children. I am also a positive person I will be happy to act as an ambassador when guests visit.

ZanettaZanettaZanettaZanetta My name is Zanetta and I am in Room 11. I am 11 years old and I live in a family of six. There’s my mum, dad, sister and twin brothers. I have been at Wattle Grove for six years. I previously went to Queens Park Primary School. I enjoyed it there but moving to Wattle Grove was great fun and also a remarkable choice. Some of my hobbies are playing netball and volleyball. Some things I really like about Wattle Grove Primary School are how everyone wants to strive for excellence. Everyone has certain limits and never gives up. I love that people are kind and caring to one another. We all try our best to succeed at something by setting goals. As a Student Representative I would like to become better at public speaking and improve my reading fluency. I will practise every day at this. I’m looking forward to helping others around the playground and being a responsible role-model for the younger students. I would like to participate in a fundraising event, with the other Representatives, to donate old clothes and toys to charities so that we can help others in need.

JacobJacobJacobJacob Hi my name is Jacob and I'm in Mr Sherlock’s and Mrs Querios's class in Room 31. I have been at Wattle Grove Primary School for the last seven years and have loved every day of it. My family include my Mum and Dad, my younger brother Mitchell and also my pet cat Sofia. My family is half Australian and half Italian. I love to play cricket, soccer and football and I absolutely love the West Coast Eagles. At this school I have many memories I will treasure forever. I have many good friends that all get along with each other and all play in a safe manner. I also like this school because we have very high standards and our reputation in the community is excellent. When I become a Student Representative I know it will be a big responsibility but it is one that I look forward to. I hope to be a good role model for the younger students in the school and organise a fundraiser for the Cancer Council.

SiennaSiennaSiennaSienna I have been at Wattle Grove for seven years, this year will be my last. My Mum’s family is Italian and my Dad’s family is Portuguese. My Dad was born in Portugal and my Mum’s Dad was born in Italy. I have two siblings. Ava is two years older than me and she has just started Year Seven. My brother, Johnny, is three years younger in Year Three. I love to play football, netball, cricket and soccer. Here are some reasons on why I love this school. I love the fun events such as: Book Week, Harmony Day, Fun Runs, excursions, incursions and the Sports Carnivals. I love the fact that the school keeps the traditions from the old school. I have made awesome friends who we always get along with. The staff are very friendly and helpful. As a Student Representative, I would like to further develop my leadership skills. I want to be a positive ambassador for the school at functions and meet and greet important people when they visit the school. My goal is to provide a stronger voice for the students. I would like to bring to the attention of the staff, any concerns the students have.
