Our SRC and house captains also assisted during the Early Years Tabloid Sports Carnival. The following students are to be commended for the role that they played in helping to man the various games: Damon Rowston, Kayla Aitken, Oliver Miller, Stevie Dahlin, Isabella Materazzo, Gypsy Manley, Richki Jackson, Eliza Pridham, Thomas Clarke, Ruby Chirgwin-Schmidt Mira Twigg, Bryn Gleeson, Cameron Woodrow, Isabelle Billias, Grace Henderson and Tahlia Jbaili. I was extremely proud of our leaders who demonstrated great care and compassion as they encouraged our younger students to have a go and enjoy the day!

While Sports Carnivals are all about team effort, participation and encouragement, it is also essential that we recognise and celebrate the amazing talent of our students. Congratulations to the following age champions:

9 Year Old Girls Jessie Gurtis

9 Year Old Boys Matti Moyle

10 Year Old Girls Esther Herry

10 Year Old Boys Max Bowen

11 Year Old Girls Mia Winchester

11 Year Old Boys Joel Stevens

12 Year Old Girls Regan Anderson Lewis

12 Year Old Boys William McClay

Finally, an event like this can only ever occur with a great deal of dedication and commitment. Thank you to Miss Bond and Mrs Rowe for organising the Primary Sports Carnival and the Early Years event. A significant number of hours goes into planning, organising and preparing staff, students and parents for a sports carnival. On behalf of the Parap Primary School community I would like to thank and acknowledge the work of our entire team. Thank-you to the parents who joined us on the day, the children were absolutely thrilled to see you at our event, for those of you unable to make it, we hope you enjoy some of the snapshots from the day.

School Council News. Every month I present a Principal’s report to the School Council. The following is an excerpt from my June School Council report:

Since our last School Council meeting, Helen and I have met with both PTM and the Darwin City Council. The City Council met with Helen, Michael Gunner and I to share the recommendations of the traffic study that they commissioned for the local area. During the meeting the Council made the following commitments to action:

Provide holding or grab rails at each pedestrian crossing

Replace the hump warning and advisory speed signs on the

Parap Road bend with Curve warning signs and advisory

speed signs

Review the Ross Smith Ave northbound merge taper prior to

the school crossing with the aim of providing a longer taper

generally in accordance with the Australian Standards and give

consideration to the painting of kerb build outs associated with

the School Crossing in bright yellow (similar to those in Parap

Road) and/or install a unidirectional hazard marker

Put in place a regular regime for checking and trimming of

vegetation around signs or relocate signs to positions where

they will not be obscured by vegetation

Consider removing the END SCHOOL ZONE 50 sign on Vimy

Lane for southbound traffic

Consider widening the path of the school side of Parap Road

between Ross Smith Avenue and Urquhart Street

Consider providing a separate access for cyclists to the bike

shed off Parap Road

The report also talked about educating parents regarding “the desirability for children under 10 years of age not to cross roads unless accompanied, or at the very least supervised, by an adult”. I have asked for a copy of the study/paper that this recommendation is based on – I will then feature excerpts in the Parap Flyer. Helen and I have queried the current practice of allowing cars to do a left hand turn from the Quest driveway onto the pedestrian crossing. There is a little confusion between whether the left hand turn was only banned during construction or if the left hand turn is a permanent ban. The Council is going to consult the plans that have been approved and clarify this discrepancy for us.

Overall I am very pleased to report that I believe all parties understand and respect our perspective as they appear to be very accommodating and responsive to our questions.

We were also thrilled to welcome the YMCA to this month’s

meeting. The Council was very impressed with the initiatives that

have been occurring as the Y strive to revamp our program. The

Council has asked the Y to write a piece for our Flyer to showcase

all of the great work that is occurring in our program. Stay tuned

for more details………..

Please remember. Report cards go home this Thursday the 23rd of June. All report cards will be accompanied by a letter providing some essential information that will help parents to unpack the format of our report cards. The letter will also detail the various opportunities that you have to meet with your child’s classroom teacher to receive greater detail regarding your child’s progress to date. Whole School Values Assembly will be held this Friday, with a 9:15 a.m. start. We hope to see as many parents joining us as possible. Deckchair cinema fundraising event is on this Thursday night. Please join us for the screening of Diary of A Wimpy Kid 2. I have heard amazing reports about the Deckchair Cinema and look forward to sharing my first experience of this Darwin icon with our Parap School community. Please remember the pre purchasing of your tickets (available from the front office) will help with our catering preparations. School resumes for students on Tuesday the 26th of July. All school staff will return to school on Monday the 25th of July for a Student Free Day. Our staff will utilise this day to engage in a series of Professional Learning as we prepare for a highly successful Semester Two! Final Flyer for this Term - today’s edition of the Flyer will be the final one for this term as our administration ladies will have all hands on deck in the lead up to report cards being sent home on Thursday. Best of luck – to our school choir who are performing at the Parap Festival this weekend. I have no doubt that they will do our school proud!

The students have been sharing some of their exciting holiday plans with me and I look forward to hearing about their adventures when we return next term. A month feels like an

extremely long time but I am sure it will fly by. I look forward to seeing everyone returning to school healthy, happy and refreshed! Have a wonderful break with your families and friends and we will see you all in term 3. Yours in education, Miss Aderyn Chatterton OUR VISIT TO THE CHIEF MINISTER’S V8 SUPERCAR MARQUEE: Last Friday the School Executive team was invited by the Chief Minister to visit the V8 Supercars. We headed out to Hidden Valley at 10:30 a.m. and were back at school by 2:00 p.m. We spent a few hours cheering on the drivers and watching the stunt performances. The marquee was very fancy, it was set to a high standard and the food was exceptionally delicious. We were also lucky enough to receive a special V8 Supercar hat which we got autographed by two of the drivers. The day was very exciting and was definitely a worthwhile experience. By Liam McDonald, Juliette Parons, Olive Hill, Remi Griffith, Chelsea Miller and Paul Hutton.

Music

Music has been educational and enjoyable. Students have

discovered the exciting world of Music by playing instruments and

learning theoretical elements. Students and staff would like to say a

big thank you to our parent council members. Through the fund

raising efforts of our parents we were able to purchase 29 guitars

for classroom use. Year 6/5 students are very excited to commence

guitar lessons.

We have now come to the end of our Music lessons but several

activities are continuing. All classes are now enjoying Drama

lessons. If you see any dramatisation at home, blame it on school!

Kids will be acting, improvising, gaining confidence and having

loads of fun. This is a class where all students can learn to display

self expression and feel comfortable in performing in front of

others.

Although Music lessons have been replaced by Drama lessons,

several other activities are continuing.

Guitar lessons.
