Congratulations to: Mrs Claire Bray, Ms Fauve Grady, Mr Daniel McLean, Ms Jaime Rochford and Mrs Mel Schmidt. We are also very pleased that Ms Deb Haddow and Mrs Kellie Rose join us as DET representatives. We look forward to working with all of our school councillors over the course of 2020 and welcome the skills and ideas that they offer to the benefit of all in our school community. Many thanks to our outgoing School Councillor, Mrs Kintarra Phillips for the wonderful contribution she has made to LPPS over the past years. School Council next meets on Monday March 16. If for some reason your child is late, you will need to have them sign in for a late pass. Also, please note that if they are scheduled for a specialist class they will need to go directly to the specialist classroom with their late pass and their bag. They will not be able to access their normal classroom because it will be locked and their teacher will be meeting in another area of the school. HATS—SCHOOL UNIFORM Part of being healthy is looking after your body. Be active, eat well, sleep. We also

need to be responsible enough to protect our skin from the sun. Australia has a high rate of preventable skin

cancers—caused by sun exposure. WE EXPECT EVERY STUDENT TO WEAR THEIR SCHOOL HAT FOR AT

LEAST TERM 1 AND 4, AS SET OUT IN OUR UNIFORM POLICY. This includes during any outdoor activities

such as sport. Teachers will issue uniform notices for students without hats. No hat means students must stay in

the shade. Please help us to support your child and protect them from UV rays.

We have been working through a selection process to elect this years representatives. Once the successful applicants have been decided, these students will be announced at Assembly. More details to follow! FREE VISION TESTING

5 WAYS TO RESIST CHILDREN’S PESTER POWER—PARENTING TIPS https://www.parentingideas.com.au/blog/5-ways-to-resist-childrens-pester-power/

Do you have a child who won’t take “no” for an answer?

Kids have a way of getting under your skin when they really want something. You can refuse their request for a treat, some extra time

out of bed or some new clothes, and they can keep at you until you give in.

Whining, tantrums and appeals to fairness are common tactics that kids use to break down parental resolve.

Some kids when they receive a knock back from one parent, will try the other parent out. “Okay, mum said no to an ice cream, I’ll just

check to see what dad says” is the type of tactic I‘m talking about here.

Solo parents can easily become worn down by pester power as there is no one to share the burden with.

Pester power hasn’t always been a problem for parents. In the days of large families, when four or more children were common, not only was there less propensity to give kids what they wanted but siblings had their own way of dealing with rebellious or ‘prima-donna’

type behaviour.

There is no doubt that kids’ pester power is alive and well and living in Australian homes right now. In these times of smaller families

the voice of one child resisting can be the only voice a parent hears.

If your kids don’t take no for answer, particularly when they want you to buy, buy, buy consider these well-tested resistance strategies:

1. Keep explanations to a minimum.

It’s worth remembering that it’s okay to say no… without always having to explain yourself. While kids should know why we don’t give/allow them something that doesn’t mean we have to give answers every single time. Most of the times kids know why we say no, but they just keep pushing

the boundaries.

2. Make yourself scarce.

My wife was an expert making herself scarce physically or psychologically when my kids used to argue the point with her. She would ignore attempts to change her mind, going about her business as if they weren’t there. They soon realised that arguing was futile. So have I… except it

took me a little longer!!

3. Communicate with your partner.

Teenagers are adept at putting pressure on parents to acquiesce to their demands, particularly when it comes to going out. Get into the habit of

bringing your partner into the picture. “I’m not sure about that. I’ll check with your father/mother and get back to you” is a handy response.

4. Draw strength from a friend.

It helps, particularly if you are on your own, to phone a friend to check if you are being reasonable. It’s easy to doubt yourself, and your sanity,

when you are on your own.

5. How can you make this happen?

Sometimes it’s best to put the onus on to kids, particularly when they pester you to buy them things. “Sure, you can have a new mobile phone. Have you got enough money to buy it now or do you have to save for it?” is the type of response I suggest for kids who just love you to be their

automatic teller machine.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION ACTION PACKED SPORTING PROGRAM 2020

The PE department is looking forward to another energetic and action packed year. Once again there will be many fun sporting activities on offer for the students as well as their normal PE classes. Many of the programs and activities benefit and rely on parental support and assistance. We appreciate and encourage parent helpers for many of the programs. Parental assistance with the House Athletics Sports on Wednesday 25th March will be greatly appreciated. TWILIGHT SPORTS Wednesday 11th March is the Twilight Sports for the students in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2. A notice has be sent out providing information about the night. We hope to see all our Junior school students participating in this activity. PE CLASSES During Term 1 students in Years 3 – 6 will be developing their athletic skills – discus, shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump and sprints. Whilst the Year 1 and 2 students will be participating in activities designed to develop the fundamental motor skills – throwing, catching, ball bounce, kicking, leaping, striking and dodging. It is important for students to come to PE classes appropriately attired and prepared for physical activity. We ask that parents/guardians ensure that their child:

Wears runners for PE –this is or safety reasons and to ensure that the surface of the gym floor is not damaged.

Has their hat – most PE classes will be outside during Term 1.

Brings a water bottle for hydration

Notes: Parents are asked to write a note for their child when they are unable to participate in PE classes. YEAR 6 WATER SAFETY – MILLS BEACH 10TH – 14TH FEBRUARY In the first two weeks of term, Year 6 students participated in 3 pool sessions in preparation for their week at Mills beach. Activities included – safe entries into a water environment, using a Personal Floatation Devices (PFD), freestyle and survival stroke practise, rescues and releases, safety in a boat.

On Tuesday 11th February, students had their first day at Mills Beach. Beaches are known as “open” environments, as conditions are

always changing. Unfortunately due to extreme weather and water conditions – rough seas and poor water quality – the Monday

activities were cancelled. The program was adjusted to make sure all students rotated through the 8 different activities:

Using a personal floatation device Snorkelling Rescues Beach Games Team Building activities Water Skills which included signals and moving through

water effectively An introduction to CPR And Boards. These activities are designed to expand on the water safety skills the students learnt in the previous pool sessions. In addition, the beach provided students with challenges, team building skills, co-operation and experiences. Carnival Day was on Friday. Competing for their House, students participated in 5 different activities – Wading, Nipper Boards, Personal Floatation Devices (PFD’s), Sprint and Relays and Flags.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION YEAR 6 SUMMER SPORT Year 6 students participated in their first Interschool Competition against Baxter Primary School last Friday. It is an exciting time for all students and a wonderful experience. Our philosophy with Interschool Sport at LPPS is for students to have a positive experience with team sport. Therefore our emphasis is on:

Participation

Developing an understanding of the sport and working co-operatively in a team.

Demonstrating good sportsmanship at all times – playing by the rules, supporting teammates, acknowledging the achievements

of the opposition, winning graciously and losing with dignity.

Fun

Whilst it is nice to win, the above mentioned takes priority – winning is a bonus! Round 1 Results: ROUND 1: 21/02/2020 LANGWARRIN PARK V BAXTER
