Dear Pristava members,
Another year of activities at Slovenska Pristava awaits us. This
will be the 60th year that we come to our precious picnic grounds
to socialize. Construction projects and picnics are in the final
planning stages.
Members of Pristava from beginning days, Paul and Cecilija Kosir
donated $1/4 million to Pristava for construction of additional
small party room and storage area with full basement. The new
par-ty room will restore Lobe Hall’s original purpose, a rental
facility for birthdays, graduations and small gatherings at
reasonable cost. This is a great step forward for Pristava. The
board of Pristava along with membership participation needs to
rejuvenate life at Pristava in sports activities, balin-ca
entertainment, prayer events and other social interactions. We have
work to do and I am prompting membership to participate when they
can. The Reverse Raffle was planned for April 18th, but was
cancelled due to Covid19 health concerns. We will update the
membership via web-site and social media for any additional changes
as the board considers appropriate.
Pristavska Noc was great success. The board elected to honor
Pristava presidents who served for many years in that capacity. The
honorees were Milan Ribic and wife Breda (12 years), MaryAnn Vogel
(6 years) and myself with wife Michelle (serving 9th year). The
board will continue to ex-press appreciation in various ways to
deserving Pristava members and benefactors. Many thanks to all
volunteers that made the 59th Pristavska Noc an event to
remember.
The projects for this year are: 1. Lobe Hall addition 2. Lobe
Hall renovation 3. Window replacement on old buildings. 4. Beehive
house (no bees planned) 5. Pavilion at pool requires new floor. 6.
Minor road repair. 7. Miscellaneous repairs
Volunteer work is always sought and welcome. The Board salutes
active participation of Pristava Campers and Pristava Pensioneers
communities. These entities are an integral part of PRISTAVA with
their dedicated service and donations. I extend an invitation to
members and friends of Slov-enska Pristava to visit us often and
enjoy the variety of events scheduled for upcoming season.
Additionally, please support Slovenian radio stations and Slovenian
American Times throughout the 2020 season for they are our window
of publicity.

The event was enjoyed by many! Start the 2020 summer season at
Slovenska Pristava with another Slovenian-style grilling feast on
Sunday, May 31! Dinner will be a variety of grilled meats cooked to
perfection including side dishes and dessert. Dinner is $16.00 and
no
need to make reservations. Enjoy Slovenian Music, Balinca,
playground and nature! Weather permitting the Pristava pool will be

Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Vetrinje (Viktring)
Tragedy and Slovenian Diaspora
The Board of Slovenska Pristava invites you to the annual
Spominska Maša/Mass of Remembrance this Father’s Day,
Sunday, June 21, 2020. This year we will be commemorating the
75th Anniversary of the events of late May, 1945 and
subsequent Exodus from Slovenia with a Solemn Mass, Program, and
Dinner.
Please allow me some time to explain one of the reasons why
Slovenska Pristava dedicates each Father’s Day as a
Day of Remembrance for those murdered during this fight against
Communism, for the survivors of the war, and the
survivors of the diaspora and their descendants. We are first
and second generation Slovenian-Americans, descended
from the Slovenians who immigrated to the USA after WWII,
learned early in our lives that though our parents
survived the ravages of “The War” not all family members did. It
was common knowledge that almost every family
within our Northeastern Ohio community (and Slovenian
communities throughout the world) had family members
who were martyred during the war against Communism in their
homeland. No one was spared.
The vast majority of those killed were adolescent boys and men
in the prime of their lives. Each of these individuals
gave all they had for “Bog, Narod, Domovina.” These individuals
were denied the opportunity or had their times as
father’s cut short. With the memory of these victims in mind,
what better day to remember the martyred and the
exiled, and the families denied, than on Father’s Day? Each of
these murdered souls deserves to be remembered for
their sacrifice and so we the descendants of exiles offer this
Mass in thanks for the lives we built upon their toils.
Let us remember the very real journey our families took to leave
Slovenia (Yugoslavia) for Austria or Italy. These
individuals, who were afraid for their very lives, left
everything behind and travelled by foot, wagon, horseback, and
bicycle to the Displaced Persons camps. It was in these camps
that our forebears waited until sponsorship to travel to
a new country an ocean away and begin life anew.
Our families over the years have instilled within us both a deep
love for both their homeland and their adopted
country. We demonstrate this feelings in our celebrations filled
with food, music, and drink, our celebrations of faith
are steeped within our cultural heritage, and our honoring of
those who sacrificed their lives for the Slovenian faith.
The brutality our family members faced must never be forgotten
just as the way they were able to make a new life in
a new homeland must be celebrated.
Help us remember the 75th Anniversary of the May Massacres and
Slovenian Diaspora. Let us always remember
those who sacrificed all in the name of Bog, Narod, Domovina
(God, Nation, and Homeland).

volunteered at Slov-enska Pristava throughout the years. It is
because of our volunteer based that we are functioning well. This
year, we are requesting that you volunteer 2 hours. All events need
help but the ones needing the most volunteers are: Opening Picnic,
Proud to be a Slovenian Day and the Wine Festival. This is a great
opportunity to meet new peo-ple! No experience is needed! A
volunteer sign-up can be found within this mailer. Please respond
by May 15th. We are very confident that you will be there to help
us this year. Every member is a great benefit to us.

Pristava Financials 2020 Your annual dues are a vital part of
our finances. The $100 dues ($60 for seniors thru age 85 and free
for members
over 85 yrs. old) amounted to $54,000 of revenue in 2019.
Why are these dollars so critical? Our three largest expenses
are Real Estate Taxes, Insurance and Maintenance ex-
penses. In 2019, these expenses totaled $66,000. So our dues
cover 82% of these three categories. Our fund raising
events - Pristavska Noc, Reverse Raffle, Oktoberfest, SP picnics
- generate profits that cover the remaining costs of the
above three categories as well as other additional costs
(utilities, janitorial and picnic supplies) totaling
approximately
$40,000.
Your donations and new member fees provide Pristava with the
funds to pay for capital projects that ensure that our
grounds and facilities continue to be world class! As our events
are cancelled or put on hold it is more important than
ever that our membership dues are paid on time!

Pristava Campers News Welcome back to the 2020 camping session.
The Steak Dinner Fund Raiser is scheduled for July 25th with a mix
of Slo-
venian and Easy Rock music to entertain all the guests. It is
very important for not only the campers, but for all Pristava
members to support the camp ground fund raiser. There are many
necessary safety repairs needed as well as needed
purchases. Future walking trails with resting benches and
evening walk-way lighting are also in the works that benefits
us all. But none of this is possible without your support. There
are still some cabin sites available for qualified mem-
bers.

Orlov Vrh News – update:
Marija Grotto, Memorial Mass, Baraga
Stations of the Cross
Orlov Vrh is a peaceful place to visit anytime for personal
prayer, reflection
or to light a candle for a special intention.
Grotto construction began last year, as the new home for a
historic Blessed Virgin Mary statue donated by
Marija Brodnik. Unfortunately, masonry specialist, Tom Potti,
broke his right shoulder thus unable to com-
plete the project. Completion should be in time for our 75th
Anniversary Memorial Mass on Orlov Vrh, Sun-
day, June 21st for our fallen soldiers/Domobranci. All Pristava
members, non-members, families and friends
are invited to honor our loved ones and our shared history from
the atrocities of war, in particular WW2.

On the occasion of the 2005 Baraga Days, Belokranjski Klub
donated photocopies of the Frederik Baraga’s
Stations of the Cross to the Chapel site. The originals were
purchased and installed by Baraga at Sv. Nikolaj
in Metlika in Belokranja Slovenija. The shrines were recently
restored, repainted and relocated at the time
of garden upgrades. The 2018 Pristava Camp Corps students
assisted with these labors.
Thank you also to Pristava President Metod Ilc, Stane Rus, Frank
Vidmar, and Nenca Cerer for their assis-
tance with the Grotto and Stations projects. See any Pristava
Board member to contribute toward future
upkeep, construction or landscaping.

Cross Prayer Service organized by Belokranjski klub in
cooperation with
Slovenska Pristava and The Bishop Baraga Association. The
occasion is in
celebration of Frederik Baraga’s birthday.
Everyone is invited! The Belokrajnci’s intentions are to join
with our saintly
Baraga in prayer for our living and deceased members, friends
and our na-
tions of America and Slovenija. A pot-luck luncheon is planned
after the
service for all in attendance. No charge, details are
forthcoming.

Camp Pristava 2020 Camp Pristava 2020 will be held from July
13-19, 2020. Enrollment is open to all members of Slovenska
Pristava, Saint Mary’s Slovenian School and Saint Vitus Slovenian
School. Camp is open to children who have completed 3rd grade (must
be 9 years old) through 8th grade. Registration forms will be
available in May 2020 via email and or on the Slovenska Pristava
website at SlovenskaPristava.org. Check back on our website for
more details to come!

Membership and Gate Cards
Cards issued from 2009 to the
present are your Membership
card and Gate Key. Your card/s
will be activated only upon pay-
ment of all dues owed. Members should always carry their
cards and will be required to present them at the gate for
admission.
***All adult guests who wish to gain admission to our
grounds are required to purchase a one-day membership
for $5. Additional gate cards may be purchased for $7.***
Liquor License Slovenska Pristava has a
liquor license to sell alcohol on its prem-
ises. This license is valid only for organi-
zations that have nonprofit status. The
rules of this license mandate that only
active members may purchase alcohol. Therefore, it is very
important that yearly dues are paid in full.

venience if you are interested in renting the pool Pavilion.

not easy to make, so on questionable days, check Face-

Pristavska Noč Pristavska Noč 2020 was held on January 25th and
had over 300 guests in attendance! The night began with cocktails
and great conversation, and ended with more cocktails and
entertainment by Veseli Godci. Joe Tavčar and his esteemed crew
provided tasty appetizers and a delectable family-style dinner.
This year we had the privilege of honoring three important
individuals who have served as President of Pristava for the
majority of the past 30 years.
We presented Milan Ribič, Mary Ann Vogel, and Metod Ilc with
plaques, and extended our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to them
and their families. They have volunteered countless hours and many
years of their time and we are very appreciative. Pristavska Noč
2020 was a special event and a fun break during the long winter
months!
