29th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 22, 2017

Mr. Cleveland Stroud had coached the basketball team, the Blue Collar Bulldogs, of Rockdale County High School (Conyers, Georgia, U.S.A.), for 18 years before his team made it to the state championship. Stroud recalls, “It was the perfect night when they won, a night you dream of." He was carried around the gym on the shoulders of his triumphant players and their proud parents. The local paper put his picture on the front page. But the excitement was short-lived.

Two months after the championship, during a routine grade check, Stroud discovered that one player had been academical-ly ineligible. The player had only played 45 seconds during the regional qualifying tournament, and he wasn’t an important player. Stroud says, "I thought it was all ruined. I went through a phase where I was really depressed." He struggled with what to do next. Yet, his commitment to integrity led him to the right decision. "Winning is the most important thing for any coach," he says, "but your principles have to be higher than your goals."

He reported the error to the league and the Bulldogs forfeited their trophy. When the team lamented their loss in the locker room, he told them, "You’ve got to do what is honest, what is right, and what the rules say. That’s how we pay to God what’s His. People forget the scores of basketball games, but they don’t ever forget what you are made of." (In Touch Maga-zine, January 1999).

Mass for God’s Children Nov. 8 in Minot

Coming to Minot! The annual Mass for God's Children will be held Wednesday, Nov 8, at 7 p.m. at St. John the Apostle in Minot. Bishop Kagan will offer this Mass for all those who

lost a child in the womb or during childhood. Please register at bismarckdiocese.com/godschildren to have your child's name in the program and to process a flower to Mary prior

A little girl, dressed in her “Sunday best”, was late and running to her

Sunday school class. As she ran, she prayed, “Dear God, please don’t let me be late, Dear God, please don’t let me

be late.” Then she fell.

She got up, dusted herself off and saw that her dress was now dirty and had a little tear. She started running again, still praying, “Dear God, please don’t let me be late.” But this time

she added, “but please don’t push me, either!”

I try my best to live

as God asks, but I make a lot of

mistakes and I don’t always feel God’s

presence. How can I know that God loves

me?

Most people, at one time or another, find themselves asking this

very question. There comes a time in any developing spirituality

and awareness of God when it is necessary to ask the question and

then come to a faith conviction that we are, indeed, loved. When

we ask ourselves the question, “Does God love me?” we are also

asking ourselves, “Do I love me?” It is very hard for the average

person to answer that question, but for those who have a tendency

to dwell on every mistake, even after receiving forgiveness

through the sacrament of reconciliation or who hold themselves to

a standard of perfection, it can be even more difficult. They may

find themselves asking, “How can God love me when I have all of

these thoughts and these feelings? Surely my life is displeasing to

God.” God loved you first. God’s love started everything off. Be-

cause God first loved you, he gave you life. God does love you,

no matter what you have done, and he offers forgiveness and mer-

cy through reconciliation when you are truly sorry. There is noth-

ing you can possibly do to make God stop loving you. When God

loves, he loves for keeps. He will not change. He will always be

faithful in his love for you. That is why the Bible tells us: “God is

A kindergarten teacher was walking around observ-ing her classroom of chil-

dren while they were drawing pictures. As she got to one girl who was working diligently, she

asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, “I’m drawing God.” The teacher paused and said, “But no

one knows what God looks like.”

Without looking up from her drawing, the girl re-

plied, “They will in a minute.”
