From the Parish Priest Dear Parishioners

I would like to gently remind everyone of the importance of arriving to Mass on time, including for week-day Masses. In fact we should aim to arrive at least 5 minutes early for Mass to give ourselves some time to settle down, focus and recollect ourselves before the sacred mysteries that are about to open up for us begin. Sometimes, however, it is understood that we may be unavoidably late for Mass due to exceptional circumstances beyond our control. Of course when we near the end of Mass it goes without saying that we could never think of leaving Mass early after communion except if it was an unavoidably urgent situation. Please note the special occasions coming up for the celebration of the Mass during the month on Saturday 13th, Wednesday 24th and Friday 26th May. Details are on page 2 of the newsletter. Finally I would like to publish, once again, the recent message from Father Adrian, the Moderator of the Oratory as there may be many people who missed it in the newsletter a few weeks back.

FROM THE ORATORY MODERATOR:

The Fathers and Brothers of the Oratory are very grateful to our parishioners, friends and other benefactors for the many ways that you support us. One of the tests of an Oratory-in-formation is that it can show itself to be financially viable, and as the Archbishop has publicly stated, the Brisbane Oratory in Formation is not financially supported by the Archdiocese. The Oratory therefore raises some of its money from the paid ministerial work of the priests of the Oratory, but the larger portion of the money that we need comes from our benefactors.

For these first few years, our main expense is the important work of training the Oratory’s future priests, priests who will be here to serve you for many years, God willing. Thank you for your recent and generous offerings to the Holy Thursday collection which was advertised as being for the training of the Oratory’s seminarians. We’re also grateful to those of you who have chosen to use the Oratory envelopes via the Sunday collections, or via the Oratory donation box at the back of Mary Immaculate Church.

Thank you also to our other regular givers who contribute via direct deposits or via credit card giving. The fact that we are always able to pay our bills, especially the seminary fees when they come in, is a mighty example of God’s providence working through you. We certainly can’t do it without your help.

We have, so far, raised about $65,000 of our goal of $100,000 for the 2017 seminarian education appeal. If you would like details about the ways that you can contribute, please pick up a flyer from the back of the church which has the photos of our four seminarians (details are on the reverse). 10 Commandments of the Liturgy By CHRISTOPHER CARSTENS

Here, then, based on the Church’s own teaching, are 10 principles to form the liturgical conscience. Perhaps there are more; maybe

there are fewer; undoubtedly the principles could be arranged or expressed differently—but knowing even this non-exhaustive list of

liturgical truths will help us see the liturgy as the Church herself does.

1. The Liturgy Glorifies God and Sanctifies HumanityThe Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy describes the liturgy as a work

“wherein God is perfectly glorified and men are sanctified” (7; also 10, 59, 61, 112). Here is the most basic, most fundamental, most

essential liturgical norm. Is it also the most overlooked? God’s glory and our salvation are “twin” goals since, as St. Irenaeus puts it,

“the glory of God is man fully alive; moreover man’s life is the vision of God” (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 294). To be a

saint is the best way to glorify God; and to spend one’s life praising God is, as a consequence, to become a saint. These are the main

purposes of the liturgy from its greatest source of power to its smallest detail: from the Eucharistic presence of Christ himself, to the

cantor leading the congregation in song and prayer, to the doorknobs on the church’s front entrance.

First Reading: Acts 2:14.36-41

On the day of Pentecost Peter stood up with the Eleven and addressed the crowd with a loud voice: "The whole House of Israel can be certain that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ." Hearing this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the apostles, "What must we do, brothers?" "You must repent," Peter answered "and every one of you must be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise that was made is for you and your children, and for all those who are far away, for all those whom the Lord our God will call to himself." He spoke to them for a long time using many arguments, and he urged them, "Save yourselves from this perverse generation." They were convinced by his arguments, and they accepted what he said and were baptised. That very day about three thousand were added to their number.

The merit, in the sight of God, is in bearing punishment patiently when you are punished after doing your duty. This, in fact, is what you were called to do, because Christ suffered for you and left an example for you to follow the way he took. He had not done anything wrong, and there had been no perjury in his mouth. He was insulted and did not retaliate with insults;

when he was tortured he made no threats but he put his trust in the righteous judge. He was bearing our faults in his own body on the cross, so that we might die to our faults and live for holiness; through his wounds you have been healed. You had gone astray like sheep but now you have come back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Jesus said: ‘I tell you most solemnly, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold through the gate, but gets in some other way is a thief and a brigand. The one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the flock; the gatekeeper lets him in, the sheep hear his voice, one by one he calls his own sheep and leads them out. When he has brought out his flock, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow because they know his voice. They never follow a stranger but run away from him: they do not recognise the voice of strangers.' Jesus told them this parable but they failed to understand what he meant by telling it to them. So Jesus spoke to them again: `I tell you most solemnly, I am the gate of the sheepfold. All others who have come are thieves and brigands; but the sheep took no notice of them. I am the gate. Anyone who enters through me will be safe: he will go freely in and out and be sure of finding pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.’
