From the Marketing Desk …
The end of the school year is an exciting time for students, families, teachers
and staff looking forward to some time off to pause during the Christmas
holiday period remembering the true meaning of this celebration.
It is difficult to comprehend that it is already Christmas 2019 when Christmas
2018 remains a vivid memory. We have distributed the 2019 Yearbooks
across campus to all our students and we trust that you will enjoy the many
memories and celebrate the journey of 2019!
We have had a year of joy and deep sorrow but we know that we are reminded
that through it all God’s promise remains true.
“But those who trust in the Lord will find strength. They will soar high on wings
like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not grow
faint.” Isaiah 40:31
HeronBridge College is excited to announce the appointment of our new

and in depth process of interviewing top candidates for the role, Wendy
Beyneveldt has been appointed as the new Head of our Pre-Preparatory
School and will commence her new role in January 2020.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year. May it be one of love,
joy, peace and hope.

GRADES 0000 - R 2020
We recently held our Pre-Prep Registration Day for all families enrolled for 2020 in Grades 0000 - R. We enjoyed a morning
together with the students spending some time getting to know their new teachers and classrooms. Thank you to all the
Pre-Prep Teachers and Assistants for a wonderful morning!

The Grade R’s from HeronBridge College recently showcased their musical talents in their annual Showcase and Graduation,
celebrating our beautiful South Africa. 92 children took to the stage and showed their proud families what they had learnt this
year during their specialised music lessons. The audience was wowed by items including drumming, singing in English, isiZulu
and Afrikaans, ribbon dancing, folk dancing, sign language, prose and harmonising with bells, ending the production on a high
with their traditional clave routine. The children then graduated from Grade R, in an official Graduation Ceremony and are
officially on their way to big school. We are so proud of you, Grade R class of 2019!

Kicking off the midterm in market day style!
Kids all over HBC were extremely excited about the annual ‘Market day’! Making sure that all desired items have been ticked
off, saving money and most importantly, having fun! The timing was just as perfect for the grade 3’s, as they have started
learning more about money and how this “money-making business” works. Thank you grade 7’s, we enjoyed spending the
time with you!

We are proud to announce that one of our pupils and teachers from HeronBridge College, are this year’s winners of the Artistic
Excellence category in the prestigious Excellence in Education Awards 2019.
Hosted by the Think Ahead Group and sponsored by Apple, the event took place on the 23rd October at The Venue, Melrose
Arch. The competition serves as a platform in which children from Grade 0 – 12 are given the opportunity to showcase their
creativity and problem solving skills, using technology, in the classroom, across the curriculum.
HeronBridge competed against 600 other entries, from 50 schools, country wide. We were thrilled when we received the
confirmation that one of our Grade 7 pupils had been shortlisted for the finals! Caron Andrews, Head of Art at HeronBridge
Prep, was the teacher who had set the project for the children. Throughout the course of the year, Caron has been teaching
her Grade 7 Art children about the art movement of Pop Art. The children have learnt about the characteristics and style of
Pop Art, as well as information about some of the famous artists in the movement. The brief was to translate the information
they had been taught and create a Stop Motion Animation, educating people about the movement of Pop Art, in a creative,
innovative way. Samantha Goodwin was nominated for her presentation, which showcased the art style of famous Pop Artist,
Keith Haring. This entry can be viewed on the Excellence in Education website https://www.edexcellenceawards.co.za/
The idea is to show how art can be combined with technology. Creativity is the number one skill that employees are currently
looking for in the workplace, so it is vital that we are encouraging and growing “out the box” thinkers in our classrooms. What
better place to do it than in the art room?
Congratulations to Samantha Goodwin and Caron Andrews on this fantastic achievement!

EQUESTRIAN Rosenmann Sisters Clean Up @ POST DERBY 2019
Kyalami Park Club was the place to be from 12 - 13 October 2019 for continued equestrian
action. Competition was stiff in every class with competitors who had a steely determination to
not only complete clear rounds, but to win!
Jade and Buddy, her most trustworthy steed, competed in the 90cm
Competition and A2 classes where they earned a 2nd place and a 4th place rosette respectively.
We look forward to seeing to which heights this pair will soar!
Saskia and Tonky also brought home 2nd place and 4th place rosettes for
their performance in the 1.10m Derby and A2 classes. These are some
praiseworthy results, since it was this partnership’s first competition on
grass, doing a Derby track. We are extremely proud of Jade and Saskia
for always competing with heart!
HOCKEY CLINIC
The first of our Hockey clinics was run on Friday 4 October at the HeronBridge AstroTurf.
1st Team Coach Jermaine Johnson working with Specialist Coach Owen Mvimbi and two additional coaches, drew together an
enthusiastic group of boys and girls for a 3-hour training session aimed at continuing to build fitness while developing and
enhancing skills. Jason Van Der Schyff was present to support from the HeronBridge side too.
The session ran from 2-5pm and was well-supported by upwards of 43 of our pupils across all Grades.
While we recognise that cricket season is about to begin, we are very aware that success in a winter sports’ season doesn’t
begin in the winter. And our Hockey Clinics in the latter half of this year are designed to enable us to be at our best when our
Hockey season officially begins in five months’ time.
Out sincere thanks go to the coaches and players for their enthusiasm and commitment.

CRICKET The Under 14’s continued their winning ways with a close victory over
Fourways recently.
Fourways arrived with intent and attacked every ball, piling on 105 runs
in a 75 minute innings. Our chaps went in to bat and made 106/8,
handing us a narrow 2 wicket victory that went to the wire.
Congratulations to the full team and in particular, Nic de Lima for taking
5 wickets and to Luke Mace for holding up his end, under considerable
pressure towards the end.
One moment to highlight was our sterling Coach James Steyn assisting a
Fourways bowler with his bowling action. We have a gem in James; a
man who cares about others and whose actions prove this.
It’s a privilege to work with you Coach J and your impact on our lads has been top class.

FINAL SIMON SAYS - AGAINST HATE
Last Friday a convicted terrorist launched an assault at a prisoner rehabilitation event near London Bridge.
There were three fatalities that day; two victims of the knife attack and one attacker shot dead by the police.
The victims were working in legal fields linked to prisoner reform. Their names are Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones.
Jack Merritt was a coordinator for the Learning Together Prison Programme which aims to bring offenders and people in high-
er education to study alongside one another.
He is described as someone who “lived his principles; he believed in redemption and rehabilitation, not revenge, and he al-
ways took the side of the underdog.” (BBC 3.11.19).
What struck me this week was the response of Jack’s father, David, who this week responded by stating that “his son would
be livid at how his death has been used to perpetuate an agenda of hate.” (Sky News 3.11.19)
We can learn something amazing from this. A father not responding as would be expected with vengeance against the man
who took his son’s life, but instead honouring his son’s commitment to prisoner reform by backing his murdered son’s legacy,
goals, aims and ambitions in the face of the most awful circumstance.
I am embarrassed to fully admit that I can’t imagine having that same heart. Even though I know it to be the right way that
would commit me to the path of our Lord.
I am staggered that this can be this father’s response and completely in awe of him. For Jack to know his Dad backed his lega-
cy so completely that he was not swayed from this on behalf of his son even after the act of murder, is truly remarkable.
I don’t know David Merritt, but I wish I did.
I’m not trying to make a political point here. Far from that. But rather to highlight a father’s response to an heinous act that is
so extraordinary and which is coupled to a commitment to absolute respect for the legacy of another.
In an age where so much is somehow connected to Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson or Mark Wahlberg enacting terrible cathartic
vengeance on an attacker, it is remarkable to be presented with this real human response.
Imagine you were in a warehouse. All the shutters were down and the vast empty space was completely empty and absolutely
dark. Now imagine someone lit a candle at the far end of that warehouse. You would see it. That tiny little flame in the midst of
the overwhelming darkness. Light beats darkness. Every time.
Love beats hate. Every single time it encounters it. No contest.
With my very best wishes.
