With the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI the Cardinals of the Church will soon gather in conclave to elect a new Bishop of Rome who is also Pope and head of the Church. When Benedict was elected many wondered what kind of Pope he would be. His reputation as a fierce defender of the teachings of the Church as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doc- trine of the Faith led many to believe that he would be a hard-line enforcer. What we have seen instead is a gentle and prayerful teacher who has tried to lay out the teachings of the Church in a way that is understandable and attractive to the people of today. He called us, again and again, to a deeper personal relationship with Jesus that is at the heart of our faith. Speaking to the young people of Great Britain he shared the following which I find an appropriate reflection for all of us during this Lenten season: “This is the message I want to share with you to- day. I ask you to look into your hearts each day to find the source of all true love. Je- sus is always there, quietly waiting for us to be still with him and to hear his voice. Deep within your heart, he is calling you to spend time with him in prayer. But this kind of prayer, real prayer, requires disci- pline; it requires making time for moments of silence every day. Often it means wait- ing for the Lord to speak. Even amid the “busy-ness” and the stress of our daily lives, we need to make space for silence, because it is in silence that we find God, and in silence that we discover our true self. I remember years ago watching with fascination the scene in the film, “The Shoes of the Fisherman” which takes place during the conclave to elect Pope Kiril. The word itself comes from the Latin cum clave (which means “with a key”). In the past cardinals were housed in the area surrounding the Sistine Chapel itself in makeshift accommodations. Now they will reside in the Domus Sanctae Marthae and move from there to the Sistine Chapel for the actual voting. All cardinals who are under the age of 80 at the time of the vacancy (Feb. 28 at 8 p.m) are eligible to vote. I believe that is 117 cardinals at this time. F ROM THE P ASTOR S D ESK B Y F R . CALL TO BE CATHOLIC SPEAKER SERIES BY JOE STILES

The Way of an Iconographer

In the Eastern Orthodox tra-dition, sacred art is believed to be divinely inspired by God, and the art-ist is the vessel through which the Holy Spirit conveys its truth. Icons --two-dimensional painted images of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the saints--are revered as important tools for worship and devotion. They contain a capacity to inspire prayerfulness and contemplation. The style of writing (painting) icons remains timeless and is intended to provide a window to another world. To be an iconogra-pher is to answer a calling and to fulfil a responsibility.

Have you noticed and ad-mired the distinguished icon found in the Adoration Chapel at St. Joseph’s Church? It was painted by Debra Kor-luka, from Stillwater, MN. She has worked as a professional Orthodox Byzantine Iconographer for 15 years.

She has studied with master iconog-raphers in the U.S., Ukraine, and Rus-sia.

Ms. Korluka will give a talk on “Seeking the Face of God: The Way of an Iconographer,” at 3:00 pm, on Sunday, March 17, at St. Joseph’s Church. This talk is part of The Call to Be Catholic Speaker Series, now in its 9th year, sponsored by five Steele County parishes. No charge to at-tend, but a free will offering is sug-gested.

highlighting the importance of discernment and humility."

FROM THE PASTOR ’S DESK CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

When a cardinal becomes 80 between the time of the announce-ment and the actual vacancy he is not able to vote either. On the opening day of the conclave the cardinals will process into the Sistine Chapel chanting the Litany of the Saints and the song Veni Creator Spiritus (Come Holy Spirit). They take an oath promising secrecy and the order is given, extra omnes (all outside). To be elected pope re-quires a vote of 2/3 of the cardinals in the conclave (or 2/3 plus one if the number is not exactly divisible). Voting begins on the first day, when one ballot is held in the afternoon if possible. If the first bal-lot does not produce a result, there are two ballots each morning and each afternoon until a result is de-clared. The votes are tabulated and then burned with chemicals which

produce either white or black smoke. Actually the smoke often looks gray so it is hard to discern whether the cardinals have been successful or not. When the 2/3 has been met the one elected is asked if he will ac-cept election and what name he will take. If he is already a bishop he im-mediately becomes Bishop of Rome (and Pope). He is dressed in the white robes of the pontiff and greets the crowds after the public an-nouncement of his election. It is a dramatic moment and one I wish I could be in Rome to see. As I said to a friend, maybe next time. Please pray for the Church during this time. I encourage you to use this prayer from the Roman Mis-sal from the day of Pope Benedict’s retirement until the new pope has been named. We will have a special prayer service during the time of the

conclave so our whole community can join in prayer.

Grief Ministry Needs You

Peace I leave with you; my peace

I give you. I do not give to you as the

world gives. Do not let your hearts be

troubled and do not be afraid.

John 14:27

Grieving changes you. In the very depths of our sorrow we find Christ and the peace that is not of this world. We find ourselves anew. We find that we are not alone. Sacred Heart has a process to connect with grieving family mem-bers. A letter is sent from the pastor within a month. A member of the grief ministry follows up with a call and potentially a visit. A letter is sent after a year. This is a minimum. Also we are here to be present to the fam-ily on the journey of grief in ways that makes sense to them. We are seeking a coordinator of Grief Ministry. It can involve up-dating our list of the families, sending out a letter written by the pastor, and asking our volunteers to make follow up calls. This is something that could easily be done in your home! We are also seeking volunteers who would like to connect with families. Pray about it. If this sounds like a good fit for you or if you know someone who may be interested please get in touch with us. Sr. Sarah, 451-1588, [email protected]

SACRED HEART ’S PASTORAL CARE TEAM From SH Parish Nurse Ministry… Some call them immunizations. Others say vaccinations or shots. Though they differ slightly, whatever one calls them, they are one of the best weapons we have against a number of serious diseases. Babies are immunized at a very young age. Throughout our lives, we receive ‘boosters’ and age / situation appropriate ‘shots’ when traveling and to prevent disease. A fairly new vaccine to prevent Shingles (Herpes Zoster) is recommended for adults, age 60 and older. Check with your physician if this is appropriate for you and with your health insurance company for payment coverage.

Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

What is it? Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. It’s caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you’ve had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and years later, may reactivate as shingles. Pain is usually the first symptom of shingles. For some, the pain can be intense and is sometimes mistaken for a symp-tom of problems affecting the heart, lungs or kidneys.

A shingles rash usually appears a few days after the pain. It often develops as a band of blisters wrapping around one side of your body from your back to your front. The blisters usually dry up in a few days, forming crusts that fall off over the next few weeks. While shingles isn’t a life threatening condition, it can be very painful. The blisters contain a conta-gious virus, so avoid contact with others, especially people with weak immunity, pregnant women and newborns.

How do you prevent it? A shingles vaccine is recommended for all adults age 60 and older, whether or not they’ve had shingles previously. The vaccine is for prevention, not treatment. Getting the vaccine doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get shingles, but it will likely reduce the course and severity of the disease. It may also reduce your risk of post herpetic neuralgia, a nerve-related chronic pain condition that can follow shingles.

Home Remedies…a cool bath or cool wet compresses, apply lubricating cream or ointment, OTC (over the counter) pain medications.

Seek medical help…if the pain and rash are near your eyes, you or someone in your family has a weakened immune system, or the rash is widespread and painful. …Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies

Do you remember the first time you walked into a strange church? Were you greeted with smiles and kind words? How were you connected from being a visitor to a member? Or did you attend for a long time without anyone saying a word to you? What do you remem-ber? Sacred Heart is an active, growing parish. New families come all the time. We have people return-ing to the Catholic faith or joining for the first time as well as those who

WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS have just moved to town. We want to involve these new faces in our par-ish family. Our Welcome committee needs to be revitalized. We are look-ing for a coordinator as well as for new members of the Welcome Team. We would love to have parishioners and families of all ages so that we can match you with new members. We have many resources and support that we can give you. Our parish has many strengths of hospitality and we are looking for a few people who

want to build our welcoming pres-ence. Do you have a passion for hos-pitality? Or would you just like to reach out and connect with the new faces among us? Time commitments can be short. Any age is welcome. From just making a phone call, to handing out a welcome packet, or getting more involved there are many ways to participate. Just give us a hol-ler through a call or email or note and we will get you connected! Sr. Sarah, 451-1588, [email protected]

January 2013 marks the 80th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Beauraing in Belgium. Our Lady appeared to 5 children between the ages of 9 and 15 on numerous occasions between November 1932 and January 1933. Her first message was, "Always be good" and "Pray al-ways".

On December 8, a crowd of 15,000 assembled expecting to see a miracle, but only saw the children in ecstasy. On December 29th one of the children saw the Virgin with a heart of gold surrounded by light. Later they all saw the golden heart. This has been seen as a connection between Beauraing and Fatima, with its emphasis on devotion to the Im-maculate Heart of Mary.

The pastor told the children to pray the rosary when Mary ap-peared to them. She rewarded them by wearing a rosary on her arm.

On Mary's last appearance a

very large crowd of about 35,000 people assembled as the children began their rosary. Mary said, "I am the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven". She then gave each child a secret and said Good-bye.

Over 2 million people visited Beauraing the first year and numer-ous cures were reported. The chil-dren all married and had families of

their own trying to keep in the back-ground as much as possible. They saw themselves as only the instru-ments for making Our Lady’s message known.

The shrine was officially rec-ognized in July in 1949. The bishop wrote about two of the many cures that had taken place at Beauraing, declaring them to be miraculous.

The statue of Our Lady of Beauraing at Sacred Heart Church, Owatonna, was a gift of the Herter Family of Waseca. The Herters had a son who was stricken with a fatal dis-ease and he was cured through the intercession of Our Lady of Beau-raing. Mrs. Herter was from Belgium and was aware of the apparitions. The Herters had several statues made of the Lady with the Golden heart in gratitude for their son's miraculous cure. The parish library has a book about the apparitions at Beauraing if anyone wishes to read more.

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. Saint Patrick, the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland was born in Roman Britain. When he was 16 years old, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was cred-ited with bringing Christianity to its people. A few years ago, I found an Irish Blessing. There was no author indicated but it is a beautiful blessing and so I share it with you!

AN IRISH BLESSING FROM FR . CRONIN

An Irish Blessing

May the blessing of Light be on you, light without and light within.

May the blessed sunlight shine on you and warm your heart till it glow like a great peat fire, so that the stranger may come and warm himself at it, and also a friend.

And may the light shine out of the two eyes of you, like a candle set in two windows of a house, bidding the wanderer to come in out of the storm.

And may the blessing of the Rain be on you – the soft sweet rain. May it fall on your spirit so that all the little flowers may spring up and shed their sweetness on the air. And may the blessings of the

Great Rains be on you, may they beat upon your spirit and wash it fair and clean, and leave there many a shining pool where the blue of heaven shines, and sometimes a star.

And may the blessing of the earth be on you – the great round earth; may you ever have a kindly greeting for them you pass as you’re going along the roads.

May the earth be soft under you when you rest upon it, tired at the end of the day, and may it rest easy over you when, at the last, you lay out under it; may it rest so lightly over you, that your soul may be out from under it quickly, and up,

and off, and on its way to God.

ST . MARY ’S SCHOOL NEWS

“Catholic Schools Raise the Standards" was the theme for Catho-lic Schools Week 2013, the annual celebration of the high quality, faith based education the nation's Catholic schools provide. St. Mary’s School celebrated their identity with other Catholic schools the week of January 27 to February 2, 2013. The week started with an Open House on Sun-day, January 27th. The school staff welcomed current and prospective families to tour the school. Through-out the week, students and staff en-joyed many opportunities to build community, celebrate talents, and serve others. Some of the special events included a talent show, voca-

tions day, student organized service projects, classroom field trips, and an all-school mass. This week also marked the beginning of registration for the 2013-14 school year. St. Mary’s has been blessed with a growing enrollment. Because of the added students, the school has added two new class-rooms in the kindergarten and first grade level. This larger class will move to second grade next year and require another added classroom at the second grade level. Out of 21 Catholic elementary/middle schools in the Winona Diocese, SMS is currently the 3rd largest with 433 students in preschool through 8th

grade. Only St. Francis in Rochester and Loyola in Mankato have more students than St. Mary’s in Owa-tonna. A vibrant school is essential in forming the next generation of active Catholic parishioners. Thank you all for supporting the school with your prayers and resources. God Bless, Mrs. Hawkins, Principal

St. Mary’s School Mission: Partnering with families to

develop a student’s full poten-tial in Mind, Body, and Spirit,

through Catholic values.

MEET FR . RAFAEL CHAVEZ

Dear Members of the Catholic Community of Owatonna, I would like to greet you all and wish each of you the best health and well-being for your family. I am Father Rafael Chavez. I have arrived from Mexico a few months ago and I am invited by Bishop John Quinn to minister with the Hispanic communities in Owatonna, Albert Lea, Dodge Center and Waseca, as well as assisting in celebrating mass in the federal prison in Waseca. I am so pleased to be among you and to do what is possible so that together we may live the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, by participating in the religious community celebrations which is one we that manifest being church together. I have encountered hospitality and an openness among the people here, as well as a great desire to be better Christians. For this reason I am inspired and called to work in the Diocese of Winona. We have been working with the community of Sacred Heart, especially in the formation and support of the liturgical ministries for Sunday mass. I am also plan-ning now to visit families in the parish every Thursday in order to get to know them better and to help integrate families into our parish activities. I hope during this Lent that the Lord Jesus Christ may transform your heart, so that we may rise with him in the next Easter. Fr.

Fr. Rafael Chávez C.
