Insurance coverage goes green The Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. is offering the first-ever insurance products designed to encourage and pro-mote green building. The new types of coverage are for commercial struc-tures and include: • l Certified Green Building Coverage – Designed for

buildings that have achieved Green Globes or LEED certification, this coverage includes a 5 percent credit for “green” features.

• l Green Upgrade Coverage — This coverage allows non-green buildings and personal property items to be replaced with green alternatives following a loss. If the entire building is destroyed, it will be rebuilt to Green Globes or LEED standards.

• Building Commissioning Coverage – Following a loss to a building system (i.e. HVAC, lighting, plumbing or safety), this coverage provides for an engineer to commission the repaired or replaced system.

Message from the president

filling seats at it’s lightly attended functions. Up until continuing education became an issue, participation in AIA events was the province of those individuals and firms who saw architecture as something more than just another profession – it was a calling that affected society far beyond the construction of buildings. A yearly convention for the entire state chapter could be held at any hotel that had a ballroom that would han-dle a hundred people. Fast forward to 2007, and the AIA Arkansas State Convention has grown to the point where very few lo-cales in the state have the capacity to accommodate the more than 600 persons signed up to attend this year’s convention. This year’s event marked our first visit to the city of Rogers. It was a great event in a won-derful new facility. An outstanding lineup of speakers and opportunities to learn and network were on this year’s agenda. The convention committee has spent a lot of time analyzing the feedback that was received from last year’s convention and made changes accordingly to provide something that should appeal to everyone. Of course, there will always be complaints. Either there will not be enough technical seminars to suit some, or maybe the keynote speaker is not relevant to all types or sizes of firms practicing in the state. Some mem-bers opted not to attend this year’s convention because they can get enough credits to maintain their license without spending the cash to participate. There are essentially three ways to view participation in the AIA and the convention in particular. One is cynically – it is a chance to fulfill the continuing-education requirements in the shortest and most pain-free manner so that one doesn’t have to attend any other seminars or presentations the rest of the year. It’s the “12 credits and I’m out of here” approach. Another is graciously – the convention is a chance to take care of those nagging CE requirements, and there is also the chance that one may come away inspired or learn some technical information about new systems or materials that could be incorporated into future work. It may not all be my cup of tea, but it’s that once a year kick-in-the-pants that reminds me why I chose architecture as a profession in the first place. And the third, of course, is enthusiastically. This is the best opportunity to learn what is new with the pro-fession. It is a chance to network with colleagues and exchange ideas. It is a chance to be inspired and a chance to celebrate the best of what our profession has achieved in the past year. And, oh yeah, the CEU’s are just an added bonus. Everyone has his own reason for attending, or not attending, the convention or participating in the activi-ties of AIA. So if an architect participates in an AIA activity only once a year, it is still worth it. Maybe they will come away a little smarter or a little more inspired to become a positive force in their own community. If that happens, it is mission accomplished.

Dear AIA Arkansas members: My name is Alissa Carlton, and I'm working on a new pro-gram for the Discovery Channel. We are looking for people from a wide variety of career fields who would be interested in being a host on the new show,“Hidden Cities.” The members of AIA could be perfect for what we need. We’re looking for anyone who is involved in the field of infra-structure, architects, civil engineers, contractors or urban planners, etc. We would also like to meet any professors, teachers or people who are simply passionate about these topics. We don't need an expert in every area, just someone who loves what they do. We want to meet all types of people -- any age, race, ethnic-ity, or gender. “Hidden Cities” will explore the vast and often invisible ma-chinery that allows modern metropolises to function like clockwork. From how water makes its way to your tap, to how commuter systems work — it will all be covered. I'm hoping you can forward my email address to anyone who might be interested in this cool new show. Perhaps you have an e-mail list you could let know about us? I'm certain that members of AIA are just what we're looking for, and I would truly appreciate any help spreading the word about our search. Thanks for your time. Best, Alissa Alissa Haight Carlton Casting Producer "Hidden Cities" Discovery Channel 323-284-5162 [email protected]

New Discovery Channel show needs architects’ feedback

Dear AIA Arkansas members: Greetings. This fall, AIA national will upgrade its Architect Finder feature on www.aia.org and finally shut down the cur-rent, very cumbersome route members must take to be in-cluded in search results. The new system ties directly to firm records in TIMSS to de-liver core firm information, then allows members to add con-siderable detail about their firms’ make up and capabilities, such as services provided, building-type specializations, firm-principal names, number of employees, locations where li-censed, and project portfolios with images. Before we ask members to build their listings, we’d like to make sure we have the very best firm data on file. That’s where you come in. Members of the CACE Public Af-fairs Resources Network and others have already worked with us to develop a system and work with this tool, and for that, we thank them. You can find two documents in this is-sue of the newsletter [see p5]. One outlines the structure and features the new Architect Finder, and the second provides guidance on reviewing your own firm records to help us bring them up to date. You can either make the fixes yourselves or forward them to national for input. We will be reaching out in addition to 1) members who do not show an associated firm in their record, and 2) firms that do not have a contact listed in TIMSS, which is critical to having their information show up in searches. Your component may receive questions about this, so sharing this information is encouraged. Thank you in advance for helping us provide a new level of member value. Terence Poltrack Managing Director, Communications The American Institute of Architects 1735 New York Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. 20006 PH: 202.626.7334 FAX: 202.626.7365 [email protected]

AIA Architect Finder Access

The site is public at this IP address: http://216.33.126.244

When ready for launch, the site will be public at this URL: http://architectfinder.aia.org

The public search interface is open to the public and requires no log-in. Firms may log in to update their firm profiles, build project portfolios, and learn site usage statistics. Log-in is through the SSO (Single Sign-On) log-in of the individual listed in TIMSS as CONTACT for the firm's COMPANY record. Currently, any RG member who is linked as an employee to a COMPANY record may also log in to update the firm profile. This may change in the future. Components may log-in to display/undisplay firms, view core data changes requested by members, clear out pending firm changes, download firm data, and learn site usage statistics. Log in is through the SSO login of the individual listed in TIMSS as CONTACT for the chapter's GROUP record. This is maintained by AIA National Membership, and is generally the primary Membership Contact for the Component. Please contact Carl Sandstrom ([email protected] / 202.626.7512) with log-in questions or for assistance logging in as a Chapter User. Others may be easily be given access upon request. Data Sources Two separate sets of data are combined to make up a Firm Profile. Core Data is COMPANY data held in TIMSS and refreshed nightly to the Architect Finder. Firms can use the online update feature to submit changes to this data, but they cannot edit it directly in TIMSS. Changes submitted by the Firm must be edited by AIA National or Component staff in TIMSS. These data fields are:

CUSTOMER (Company ID); MAIL_NAME (Company Name); COMPANY SORT; ALIAS; Address; City/State/ZIP; Country; COPHON; FAX; WEB; EMAIL; State Component (SEC LEVEL 1); Local Component (SEC LEVEL 2); CLASS (Company Type); CONTACT (Contact ID)

Firm Profile and Project Portfolio Data is entered and maintained only in the Architect Finder, by the Firm Contact, and is not found in TIMSS. It is linked to a Firm by the Company ID number. TIMSS data requirements for COMPANY record to be included in the Architect Finder Data is refreshed nightly from TIMSS to the Architect Finder web interface. For a COMPANY's core data to be pulled from TIMSS, all seven of the following data conditions must be met in TIMSS (see figures 1 & 2): 1. Record Type = C (Company) 2. Record Status = Active 3. Class = one of the following ARCHFM (Architecture Firm) ARCHSP (Sole Practitioner) ARMLTL (Multi-disc Design, Architecture Lead) ARMLTN (Multi-disc Design, non-Architecture Lead) DESGNB (Design Build) 4. Contact = must be present (not empty). This is the person who is able to login and manage the Firm's data at http://firmfinder.aia.org . NOTE: We are currently pulling data from TIMSS even if this field is empty, because many eligible firms lack this data and we want the firms to be able to edit their records anyway, which linked employee members will be able to do. But the firm listing is marked “Do not display” in the Architect Finder, and will not show up in public a search if the member searches for their firm. 5. Suppress From Directory = not checked. If this is checked, the Firm will not display online. This is what Components should use to suppress a member’s firm if the want to exercise this level of control. If this field is checked in TIMSS, the firm/member will not be able to log in and edit or even see their profile. 6. Primary Address must exist and have Status = GOOD. This is the main address for the firm that shows up in the Architect Finder. Must have at least one linked EMPLOYEE who is both: a) member in good standing, and b) a registered architect, including International Assoc. members (member status RG or AS-INTL). If the only linked employees are EM, HS, AL, or AS members, the company data is not included in Architect Finder. Additional Data Notes • The main company phone number should be Type = COPHON. (fig. 3) • Do not include "http://" when entering the Firm WEB address. (fig. 3) • The Publish flag must be checked for data to be included. (fig. 3) • Security Level 1 & Security Level 2 are currently what link the firm to a State/Local Component. (fig. 4). We are exploring other options for this, because we realize that many company records are not properly identified in this way in TIMSS. • COMP SORT on the Primary Address screen dictates the alphabetical sort order for the firm in a search result set. (fig. 5) Other forms or alternate spellings for a Firm's name should be entered on the Alias tab (DEM001 screen). Every alias entered here is included in the Architect Finder. The "P" flag is irrelevant. (fig. 6) If you feel a firm is missing that should be online in the Architect Finder, please first check TIMSS to make sure all requirements above are met. If you still cannot figure out why a firm is missing, contact Carl Sandstrom at 202.626.7512.
