MARCH 2019 | FIRST TERM | VOLUME 2 #8 I begin with a serious caution to parents who use e-hailing and cab services as transport for their children. With warnings being circulated at schools in our area about attempts to pick up children from school where no permission has been granted, along with the clear requirements in all of these taxi services’ terms and conditions that state explicitly that people under the age of 18 may not travel without an adult accompanying them, I underline our policy that we shall make every effort not to release children to these services, unless expressly ordered to do so by parents. We do have a number of transport services that operate in the area and the details of these can be obtained from our reception. I urge you to use these as an alternative. I had the opportunity to show a colleague around our school on Wednesday and was again reminded of just what a magnificent campus this is. He runs a large boys boarding and day school in KwaZulu- Natal, with years of history and tradition behind it, and yet was completely blown away by the architecture of our campus and the delight of our young people. We should never fall into the trap of taking for granted what we have and what we do here! This week has probably offered more to underline just how active and successful our young students can be than any other this year. On Thursday our teams were involved in a record number of sporting fixtures, with majority hosted at our school. So, too, our College held its first separate assembly much to the joy of the students and staff alike and we celebrated Nehã Ganpath’s extraordinary success in reaching the finals of the Chapman University’s Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest. MARCH 2019 | FIRST TERM | VOLUME 2 #8

I begin with a serious caution to parents who use e-hailing and cab services as transport for their

children. With warnings being circulated at schools in our area about attempts to pick up children from

school where no permission has been granted, along with the clear requirements in all of these taxi

services’ terms and conditions that state explicitly that people under the age of 18 may not travel

without an adult accompanying them, I underline our policy that we shall make every effort not to

release children to these services, unless expressly ordered to do so by parents. We do have a

number of transport services that operate in the area and the details of these can be obtained from our

reception. I urge you to use these as an alternative.

I had the opportunity to show a colleague around our school on Wednesday and was again reminded

of just what a magnificent campus this is. He runs a large boys boarding and day school in KwaZulu-

Natal, with years of history and tradition behind it, and yet was completely blown away by the

architecture of our campus and the delight of our young people. We should never fall into the trap of

taking for granted what we have and what we do here!

This week has probably offered more to underline just how active and successful our young students

can be than any other this year. On Thursday our teams were involved in a record number of sporting

fixtures, with majority hosted at our school. So, too, our College held its first separate assembly –

much to the joy of the students and staff alike – and we celebrated Nehã Ganpath’s extraordinary

success in reaching the finals of the Chapman University’s Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest.

The award ceremony will be live-streamed at 11h00 (PST), 21h00 (SAST) this evening. You can join

the webcast at: https://bit.ly/2tWnLP5. Today we host our second gala and the closing ceremony of the

Montrose Night Series takes place, after weeks during which our players showed skill and

considerable grit in their first foray into this prestigious competition. Our senior students have been

hard at work late into the evenings, as they craft their dramatic entry for the Festival of Excellence in

Dramatic Arts, the Hive has been filled with our technology boffins, as well as readers and students

who can spend the afternoon at work there, the prep school leadership programme got underway as

our Grade 7’s begin their work towards the award of leadership badges, and our scholarship

examinations take place this afternoon and on Saturday morning. This is all in addition to the usual

club, society, and sport sessions that continue apace. There is lots on offer and our students are

taking those opportunities with abundant enthusiasm.

That our children are so busy and committed is more than commendable, but we remain concerned

about those who remain at school without being involved in an activity and so are unsupervised. We

cannot allow this and shall be insisting that they join an activity or, in the case of the younger children

in the EYC and Foundation Phases, that they report to Aftercare, where parents will be billed on the

daily rate for this convenience. It is a matter of safety and we have to insist on this. We are also

insisting that our students leave school in the correct uniform. Our requirements are simple: they may

leave neatly dressed in full school uniform or in full sports uniform – but not in any combination of the

two.

And, finally, a reminder of an addition to our calendar as we celebrate Pi Day as a civvies day on 14

March. The dress theme should lean towards a mathematical or scientific feel, if at all possible.

May your weekend be restful.

PARENTING THE SPORTY CHILD IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Sport Scientists, Sport Psychologists, and Biokineticians are raising concerns about children’s

development and growth in sport. Their research has focused on the increased frequency of injuries

caused by repetitive movements as well as too much load on the young and developing body through

the impact of children focusing on a select sport from a young age. These factors have contributed to

the premature peaking of these athletes and ultimately, the high dropout rate of adolescents from

competitive sport. As parents and teachers, we aim to develop active, healthy children, who remain so

throughout their lives. With this aim in mind we would like to invite all parents and coaches to a Sport

Conference at HeronBridge College on Saturday 6 April from 8h00 until 13h00 where a panel of

experts will offer advice and guidance on raising a sporty child and keeping them active for life.
