Dear colleagues and friends,

The last six month period at the Institute was full of vigorous activities undertaken by the ever enthusiastic faculty and staff members in the areas of education, research, extension, and institution building. This period was marked by many important events like the Eighth Biennial Convocation of CIFE, Annual Day celebrations, Workshops on fisheries and aquaculture policy, and education, besides several other activities.

New Projects at CIFE

·A new project titled “Development and use of fluorescent transgenic zebrafish biosensors for monitoring genotoxic pollutants” has been approved for funding by Department of Biotechnology, India. This is a collaborative project between the Division of Fish Genetics and Biotechnology and Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi.

Research on Nodavirus of Macrobrachium. rosenbergii

·Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India has approved the project titled “Development of monoclonal antibody-based rapid diagnostic test for the detection of Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV) and extra small virus (XSV) of Macrobrachium rosenbergii”.

·Work on nodavirus is also being carried out under the institutionally funded project titled “Strategies for the control of nodavirus infection in M. rosenbergii”. Under this project the MrNV genome has been amplified and sequenced. Further work is being carried out to characterize the virus, to develop diagnostics and to evolve strategies to control the disease.

Development of Pb biosensorIn order to increase the stability and sensitivity of the Pb biosensor developed at Fish Genetics and Biotechnology lab, the sensor-reporter construct (PbrR/OP/gfp) was integrated into the E. coli genome using the -phage att-P/ att-B recombination sites. Briefly, PbrR/OP/gfp was inserted into a plasmid carrying the attP sequences and transformed into an E. coli strain producing -integrase. Integration was induced and the integrase inactivated. Site of integration was confirmed by sequencing. This biosensor carries a single stable copy of the biosensor

2+gene construct and can detect Pb ions in the range of 25-500 nM (Fig. 1) compared to the 100-400 µM and 100-8000 µM ranges detected by the previous ones reported earlier. Fig.1. GFP fluorescence of the induced biosensor recorded on

Loktak lake is one of the biggest wetlands brought under Ramsar sites. Under the joint developmental plan, CIFE, Mumbai and the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Manipur have

selected a 100 ha segment of the lake at Sendra and Thanga villages in Moirang Taluka (Bishnupur District) for development through community participated fisheries co-management approach. In order to improve the stock and socio-economic condition of the community, it was proposed to employ the “Fisheries Co-Management Model” where the local communities will work hand in hand with DoF as partners in the management of the lake. Under this project, following steps have been initiated so far – (a) Participatory Rural

Appraisal (PRA), and (b) Raising of carp fingerlings in earthen nursery ponds and pens. Community members were formed in seven groups for the management of various activities

and watch and ward. Technical guidance and financial assistance were provided by CIFE. DoF officers are regularly monitoring the developmental activities. Regular training programmes to the

community members are organized by CIFE. So far seven training sessions have been conducted at the site itself.

The construction of the giant freshwater prawn hatchery by CIFE under the Centrally sponsored scheme is in progress at Imphal. It is scheduled to be operational in the forthcoming season.

As per the request of the Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Nagaland, the site at Natanglu was selected by CIFE for the construction of giant freshwater prawn hatchery. The layout plan and design for the construction of 1.0 million seed production capacity hatchery was given to the Director of fisheries, Government of Nagaland. The hatchery construction was completed and became operational in the month of March, 2007.

As per the request of Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Mizoram, a giant freshwater prawn hatchery project plan has been prepared and submitted for onward submission to the funding agency.

Faculty members of CIFE participated in the Matsya Mahotsav 2007 organized by Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Assam during 6-8 March, 2007 at Guwahati. On this occasion, many lectures on aquaculture, ornamental fish and product development were delivered by the CIFE resource persons for the benefit of fish farmers of Assam and other NE States.

Demonstration of prawn grow-out technology in inland saline water

The centre has successfully demonstrated the technology of grow-out of prawns in inland low salinity water of 3-4 ppt in replicated field trials. This activity was undertaken in three cement-lined ponds of size 0.045ha, which were fed with tube well water of 3-4 ppt salinity. The ponds were manured with DAP to develop optimum turbidity in water and stocked with 45 days old prawn juveniles @ stocking density of 58,900 per hectare. The prawns were harvested after 100 days of rearing. A production of 60.0 kg, 49.8 kg and 55.6 kg was obtained from the three replicates with a respective survival of 81.0, 60.9 and 90.2 percent, which equates to a production of 1330, 1240 and 1230 kg/ha/crop of 100 days.

Scampi seed production in inland saline water

The centre has produced 1.0 lakh post larvae of scampi during the period by using inland ground saline water. This seed was supplied to the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Haryana; IVRI Bareilly and a farmer of Bareilly district, U.P. Another cycle with 2.0 lakh larvae is in progress.

Magur seed production in inland saline water

The Centre has produced 10,000 seed of magur (Clarias batrachus), out of which 8,000 has been supplied to HAU, Hisar (2,000), CIFE Powarkheda Centre (2,000), and Fisheries Department, Haryana (4,000). Another 10,000 seeds are being reared at the Center.

Development of flow-through system of aquaculture

This centre has developed a flow-through pond system for intensive rearing of high saline species of fish/prawns by using inland ground saline water. All the experimental ponds along with the reservoir pond have been lined with poly aqua-lining of PVC material for developing environmentally safe and economic culture system.
