6th Sunday of Ordinary Time

February 11, 2018

FROM THE DESK OF MONSIGNOR HEITING

“IF YOU WISH, YOU CAN MAKE ME CLEAN” In Saint Mark’s gospel for the 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear a leper say to Jesus: “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Not only did the Lord wish for this to happen, but He immediately healed the leper of his illness. Is not the leper’s cry our own as well? We all need to be “made clean” of something. As we stand on the threshold of the Lenten season, perhaps this gospel might be a good “motivator” for us. What a wonderful thing it would be if every parishioner of St Gabriel, Immaculate Heart of Mary, and Saint Anthony parishes resolved to come to the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once during the Lenten season!

IN THE HOSPITAL… If you know that you will be entering an area hospital (Slayton, Worthington, Tracy, etc.) for test or surgeries, please let me know so that I can offer you the Sacrament of the Sick preferably before you leave. If you unexpectedly find yourself in an area hospital (Slayton, Worthington, Tracy, etc.) please have a family member let me know so that I can visit you. If you find yourself in a Sioux Falls hospital, please have a family member contact me. I would be more than happy to work with someone in your family so that they might help me to coordinate a visit with you there.

IT’S AROUND THE CORNER… The “kick-off” weekend for the 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal (Annual Diocesan Appeal) is February 17-18, 2018. I will be preaching about the appeal over the weekend of February 24-25, 2018.

CHANGE OF MASS TIME… Mark your calendars now! On Sunday March 4th, the Mass at Saint Gabriel Parish will be at 8:00 AM and the Mass at Saint Anthony Parish will be at 10:00 AM. This is to allow room for the Saint Anthony Soup and Pie lunch which begins at 11:00 AM that Sunday. Plan to come to Westbrook for lunch that day to share food and fellowship with your fellow parishioners!

PARISH CLUSTER WISHES…

Our sympathy and prayers to the family of Louis Gieselman who died at Maple Lawn Nursing Home on January 31, 2018. May his soul and the souls of all of the faithfully departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

LENT… Don’t let it be a ‘four letter word’!

Depending on how you grew up, Lent was/is sometimes a

season we might dread. After all, when you’re a kid,

giving up sweets, praying the Rosary more & going to

Church more often didn’t exactly add up to our definition

of fun! (Let’s be honest, sometimes as adults, we’re still all

about that “fun factor” too!)

As parents, it’s time to jump on this Holy Season & use it

in the way God & The Church intended: As a time to step

away from ‘the chaos’ of our daily lives & help our

children learn & see what really matters!

As much as the Internet can take time away from those

around us; when used wisely, there are many awesome

suggestions & tips to make this Lent extra special for your

family.

Here’s one suggestion:

JESUS’ CROWN OF THORNS WWW.chaosserveddaily.com

Take a grapevine wreath (about 10 inches in diameter) …

you can find these at Walmart or any craft store. Soak

about 50 toothpicks in tea or coffee for 3 hours to dye

them a light brown color; remove the toothpicks & drain

on a paper towel. Once dried, stick the toothpicks

randomly throughout the grapevine wreath. Display this in

a prominent spot, where your children can see it. During

Lent; have your child(ren) remove a toothpick from Jesus’

“Crown of Thorns” whenever they do a good deed for

someone else. The lesson is to teach your child how acts

of kindness and love can ease Jesus’ burden for our sins

and when we chose to do something we shouldn’t do.

A LENTEN BOOK STUDY

A FATHER WHO KEEPS HIS PROMISES

By Scott Hahn

God’s Covenant Love in Scripture

of Church, if you’d like to take one home & look through

it. We will begin the six-week study Sunday, March 3,

after 8 a.m. Mass. PLEASE LET PEG KNOW ASAP IF YOU ARE ABLE TO

ATTEND.

Students are well into the Confirmation preparation process - What a great group of youth we have! Currently, the students are working through a booklet with their sponsor that is meant

to help deepen their understanding of the Catholic Faith. Thank you sponsors for your time and dedication to your

student! Our most recent session focused on the Holy Spirit; and how the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives will guide

and direct us towards God and His will for each of us.

There are picture prayer cards of each of Confirmation

Candidates in a basket on the Youth Table in back of

church. If you are able to take a card home & commit

to praying for this student in the months ahead,

please do! ~ Notes of encouragement for your student

would be wonderful, but certainly not required!

Respect Life~ The “40 Days for Life” spring campaign runs from February 14 through March 25. This is a

peaceful and prayerful approach to save babies and end abortion. It tracks biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals…from Noah in the flood, to Moses on the mountain, to the disciples after Christ’s resurrection. What a great opportunity to pray and witness for life during Lent! For information, see www.40daysforlife.com. Please continue to pray for an end to abortion.
