Body Awareness

9

Body Awareness

“Children’s ability to reach out beyond themselves to learn more about the world rests on their confidence and self esteem, and these in turn depend on children feeling comfortable with themselves.” Ann Henderson

The body is a dancer’s main tool and is particularly important for him/her to understand when practicing his/her art.

Knowing how the body moves, how body parts work and the many different ways a body can move, as well as being able to isolate or combine different movements are all important for gross motor skill development and the creation of a dancer.

Body Pa&s and Balance

Pa'ways, Speed &Energy

Body Parts(n):

A dancer uses his or her body to tell a story. Sometimes dancers will use their full body and sometimes just one or two body parts.

Some examples of using body parts while dancing include:

- Isolations, the practice of moving one part of your body - Body Rolls, starting at your feet and moving up your body, one part at a time (like a

snake) the practice of linking your isolations together- Body Halves, dancing with one half of your body while keeping the other half

completely still- Emotions, using your full body tell a story

Balance(n): a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, a state of bodily equilibrium.

Dancers needs strong balance to be able to stand on one leg, turn gracefully, go up and down on the floor and eventually go on pointe and stand on their toes.

WORDS OF THE MONTH

January

19

PLIE

Plié (n): (plee-AY) “bend", from the verb plier, to bend. A smooth and continuous bending of the knees. A bending of the knees outward by a ballet dancer with the back held straight. The motion is fluid and does not stop in downward bend. As soon as the bottom of the bend is reached the bend is reversed and the straightening of the legs is begun, equally as smoothly.

"Plié is the most important movement we have in ballet. Practically every step begins and ends with it—we simply could not dance without it. The plié is a movement, not a position; it is what a dancer moves through in order to get into the next step or directional change. Feeling the plié is very important, but getting stuck in it is another matter."

Demi Plié (n): (d’mee-plee-AY) For demi-plié the dancer bends the knees until just below the hips while maintaining turn-out at the joints, allowing the thighs and knees to be directly above the line of the toes without releasing the heels from the floor. The intention here is to keep the heels on the ground as long as possible.

Grand Plié (n): (grahn plee-AY) A full plié, or bending of the knees. In grand plié the heels lift off of the floor, except in second position, and the plié is deeper. The heels lift only as much as they have to, and then press into the floor as soon as the ascent begins.

20

Tendu

Tendu (n): (tahn-DIU) Stretched, as in Battment Tendu; Pointe Tendu

Battement (n): (baht-MAHn) Litterally, beating. A beating action of the leg. There are many types of battments overing most of the exercises performs a la barre.

Battement Tendu: "(Stretched) works the foot while lengthening and stretching the entire leg. The action of the tendu should establish a straight line from the hip to the toes while the leg stays isolated from the hip joint, with no movement in the pelvis. It strengthens the ankle and instep and develops the necessary tactile sensations and articulation of the sole of the foot against the floor, which is crucial in allegro steps."

21

DEGAGE

Battement Tendu Jeté or Battement Tendu Dégagé: (baht-mahn tahn-DIU zheh-TAY)( baht-mahn tahn- DIU-day-gah-zhay); "(Disengage) is a much stronger action of the foot than a Battement Tendu. Here the foot comes off the floor anywhere between 20° and 45°. Dégagé helps prepare the student for the needed speed and correct execution of all allegro steps that have a beginning outward brush of the working foot such as jeté, assemblé, glissade, and brisé."

22

ALLEGRO

Allegro: (ah-LEH-gro) is a portion of center floor that is of primary importance and demands a major allotment of time such as 25-30 minutes of a 90-minute class. Allegro steps are jumps.

Having reached the middle of the year at Rockland School of Ballet we find it is important to refresh all of our minds as to why we are here. One of the most important things to remember while in dance class is dancers’ manners!

As we journey into 2015 we will be looking closely once again at our dancers’ manners and striving to be the best learners and best dancers we can be! We look forward to a wonderful spring with each an every one of you!

Manners for Dancersat Rockland School of Ballet

I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself. - Mikhail Baryshnikov

28

Dancers Show Respect for Themselves by:

• Being prompt for class.• Being dressed in street clothes or warm up outerwear over ballet clothing

when coming to and leaving the studio.• Being dressed properly for class in assigned colored leotard without

underwear under the leotard and tights, without jewelry (other than small earrings) and with shoe strings tied and tucked in.

• Having their hair pulled back and secured in a bun. For shorter hair, pulled back from the face with a headband or clips is acceptable. No hair covering the neck or in the face will be permitted in class.

Dancers Show Respect for the Studio by:

• Leaving gum, food and drinks in the dressing room.• Never hanging or leaning on the barres.• Never running or doing gymnastics in the studio or waiting room.• Putting trash in the proper place.• Putting away books and magazines when finished with them.• Being quiet in the waiting room.• Turning off and putting away cell phones.• Always keeping all belongings zipped and inside their dance bags.• Always keeping the dressing room in an orderly fashion.

Dancers Show Respect for their Teacher and the Art Form they are Learning by:

• Being properly dressed and ready for class on time.• Listening when the teacher speaks and always standing in a “proper dance

stance” while listening to the teacher give combinations or corrections.• Being prepared for their turn.• Always asking before leaving the room for any reason and upon returning,

entering quietly and going around the back of room, never through the dancers who are dancing.

• Always finishing every exercise, never walking off noisily showing anger or aggravation.

• Staying at the barre until all exercises are finished.• Curtsying to teachers as a form of greeting and parting whether in the waiting

room or in the studio for class.

29

Parents Show Respect for the Dance Class, Teachers, and Studio by:

• Coming inside the waiting room to drop off and pick up dancers. It is unsafe to allow children to walk outside alone.

• Bringing dancers to class on time and picking them up promptly after class.

• Having students ready for class before they enter the classroom.• Making certain the dancer has used the restroom before entering

class.• Clearly marking the child’s items with his/her name before leaving

home.• Never leaving siblings in the waiting room unattended.• Knocking before entering the classroom if a class is in progress.• Making every effort to stand away from the viewing window if it

becomes obvious that the students are being distracted.• Not letting children stand and hit the viewing windows or doors.• Never allowing children to hit the glass windows or mirrors.• Letting us know in advance if a student will be absent and making

arrangements to schedule a make-up class.• Teaching dancers, and siblings, to sit quietly and read while waiting,

remembering that our studio is close to the waiting room and dancers can hear excessive noise.

• Teaching children to never run or scream in the studio, waiting room, or parking lot.

• Reading the welcome packet, e-news, and bulletin boards.• Calling Miss Emily during office hours to discuss any concerns.• Always remembering Rockland School of Ballet is a gossip free

environment, and talking negatively about others is an inappropriate behavior and benefits no one.

Dancers Show Respect for Others by:

• Keeping their hands to themselves during class.• Waiting quietly for others to have a turn and for instructions from the teacher.• Waiting until the music is finished before entering the classroom if they are

late to class.• Talking with one another only during share time.• Supporting other students’ efforts and never laughing, pointing, whispering or

gossiping.
