Dear Parents, Guardians and Careres, Last Thursday lunchme a great crowd in the Barcham Theatre enjoyed the Gisborne SC version of the Worlds Greatest Shave. It was a wonderful aſternoon, with popcorn, fairy floss and sausages feeding those outside, while in others the Theatre saw all manner of hair removal from students and staff, most notably from the heads of Mr Vincent, Ms Trickey and Mr Freeman, and, of course, the iconic beard of Mr Savvinos. The event was an incredible success, so our congratulaons and admiraon goes out to the Student Representave Council for their great iniave and organisaon. NAPLAN is concluded for another year: approximately 450 students sat the literacy and numeracy tests (on paper), over three days, and I want to thank students for their posive behaviour and atude to the tesng, and also Russell Wigginton for his excellent organisaon. All Year 10 students are out on Work Experience this week, and in their absence we welcome aboard Grade 5/6 students from our main feeder schools, who will sample a range of learning experiences, from the curriculum areas drama, science, PE and art. We are seeking to improve the Colleges formal uniform, and reintroduce it at some point into daily wear – as separate from the sports uniform, which has become the default. However, any change to the uniform must be properly staged and subject to wide consultaon, so don t ancipate any changes for 2020. I would be aiming to introduce the changes with our Year 7s in 2021, making it oponal for other year levels as we phase it in. At the moment, we have some mannequins on display in the General Office area just to get some feedback on a white shirt, blue pants, e and blazer. Ties and blazers would be oponal, and mainly used for special occasions, such as worn by our Captains on presentaon/informaon evenings or public ceremonies. We do need a warm jacket, suing our climate, for daily use. We need to ensure that a formal uniform is comfortable and popular with our students, as well as reflecng our college in a smart and posive way. We will connue to look at opons and seek feedback and ideas from our community. Dear Parents, Guardians and Careres,

Last Thursday lunchtime a great crowd in the Barcham Theatre enjoyed the Gisborne SC version of the ‘World’s Greatest Shave’. It was a wonderful afternoon, with popcorn, fairy floss and sausages feeding those outside, while in others the Theatre saw all manner of hair removal from students and staff, most notably from the heads of Mr Vincent, Ms Trickey and Mr Freeman, and, of course, the iconic beard of Mr Savvinos. The event was an incredible success, so our congratulations and admiration goes out to the Student Representative Council for their great initiative and organisation.

NAPLAN is concluded for another year: approximately 450 students sat the literacy and numeracy tests (on paper), over three days, and I want to thank students for their positive behaviour and attitude to the testing, and also Russell Wigginton for his excellent organisation.

All Year 10 students are out on Work Experience this week, and in their absence we welcome aboard Grade 5/6 students from our main feeder schools, who will sample a range of learning experiences, from the curriculum areas drama, science, PE and art.

We are seeking to improve the College’s formal uniform, and reintroduce it at some point into daily wear – as separate from the sports uniform, which has become the default. However, any change to the uniform must be properly staged and subject to wide consultation, so don’t anticipate any changes for 2020. I would be aiming to introduce the changes with our Year 7s in 2021, making it optional for other year levels as we phase it in. At the moment, we have some mannequins on display in the General Office area just to get some feedback on a white shirt, blue pants, tie and blazer. Ties and blazers would be optional, and mainly used for special occasions, such as worn by our Captains on presentation/information evenings or public ceremonies. We do need a warm jacket, suiting our climate, for daily use. We need to ensure that a formal uniform is comfortable and popular with our students, as well as reflecting our college in a smart and positive way. We will continue to look at options and seek feedback and ideas from our community.

In 2018 a close friend of mine, Flynn and myself entered a short-film competition called the

“International Youth Silent Film festival”. Our murder mystery themed short film, titled

“Suspected”, was shortlisted as one of 16 Victorian regional finalists.

Getting screened at the historic Astor theatre in St Kilda, our short film went on to win first place

at the Victorian regional finals! Now, in June this year, the top three finalists from every region,

will travel to Portland, Oregon, USA for the International Awards Show! Flynn and I will leave on

the 3rd of June. It’s our first time overseas! In Portland, the film festival will be hosting an entire

weeks worth of activities for the families of the chosen finalists. This includes a VIP Dinner with

the celebrity jurors, Studio tours and day-treks to see some of Portland’s amazing landscapes and

culture. We will even get to ride in the Portland Rose Festival– the largest float parade in the

United States which is attended by up to 700,000 parade watchers!

The International Awards week will

be an amazing opportunity for Flynn

and I. We are both extremely

passionate about filmmaking so it will

be a huge eye-opener at how the

industry really works. We will also get

the chance to meet and make friends

with dozens of other young, aspiring

filmmakers like us. After America,

Flynn and I are going to continue

entering more short-film

competitions. We’ve recently

entered another short film into “The

Melbourne International Youth Film

Festival”, however unfortunately we

didn’t make the finals.

We’re more determined than ever

now though and are very hopeful at

where our passion will take us.

On the 21st of March 2019 the Year 12 Vcal students visited Warrina Aged care in New Gisborne.

We started off getting to know everybody and asking them what they worked as in their early days.

We were very amazed at the different occupations that everyone did.

We then broke off in groups and started doing some activities, the boys played some board games and the girls got the residents moving by dancing and exercising.

We had a lot of fun and we are going back in two weeks to visit them again!

Scope: See the person not the disability

On Wednesday the 8th of May, we had two people from Scope come in and give us information

about the program, ‘Seeing the person not the disability’. We had a guy named Jake who had a birth

deformity with his arms, he had 3 fingers on each hand and no elbows so it was a straight arm. We

then found out that he is a Paralympian and plays table tennis for Australia. It was a really interesting

lesson and we learnt a lot. We did a couple of activities like trying to play table tennis the way Jake

does and did activities to see what it was like to have a speech disability. We will follow this up with

ice skating alongside people in wheel chairs and participate in wheelchair balloon football.

Last term Year 11 VCAL students went on a camp to Phillip Island. We did this to assist our outcomes. We participated in many activities like cleaning up the beach, making houses for the fairy penguins on Phillip Island, surfing, indoor rock climbing, orienteering on E-bikes through a forest, visiting the Vietnam War Museum and went to Amaze ‘n’ Things. On the camp we focussed on teamwork and we learned how to cook our own food which was a lot of fun because we got to cook whatever we liked. We learnt a lot about what was happening to our wildlife in the ocean and how much rubbish there really was on our beaches and how it is affecting our planet. Overall a great time was had by all. The recent Year 11 VCAL news proudly presented by and Jordan. Providing information to you regarding

the latest ongoing project about bike safety and mentoring. We aim to oversee groups of Primary school

kids in May and June and a local competition on bike challenges at the Tony Clarke Reserve in Macedon.

We are confident to teach them bike skills and safe procedures whilst riding on a road, also trying to make

it fun by adding in a few challenges for them to participate in.

We have had a few sessions on the bikes over the school year including E-bikes in Phillip Island whilst we

were on camp. We took part in a bike education course with Steve Taylor, who taught us how to minimise

bike crashes and gave us tips/ hints on riding a bike. Furthermore, Gerry Tyndall (a Roadsafe Central

Victoria Committee member) visited our school to demonstrate to us how to set out some bike challenges

for us to mentor younger kids.

Homework Club / Supervised After School

Study

Supervised Afterschool Study operates in the library on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after school from 3:30-4:30. On Tuesday there is a Mathematics focus with Maths teachers in attendance. On Wednesday and Thursday there is a generalist focus with teachers from other faculties. The teachers’ role is to maintain a positive working environment, monitor attendance, and to provide active assistance to students where possible.

Supervised Afterschool Study is available to any student who would like some assistance with their work, or to take advantage of a quiet place to study. Some students like to work as groups. There is no need to 'book' and students do not have to stay the whole time. Students who are not using the time appropriately will not be welcome. The library offers computer, and thus Portal, access.

Students may be recommended to attend Supervised Afterschool Study as a result of absences causing a need to catch up, or at the direction of the Year Level Leader where the student is either not working well in class or failing to submit homework or assignment work.

On Thursday 16th of May, 22 of Gisborne Secondary College’s students and staff shaved their heads, waxed their legs (a

group of Year 12 boys have realised waxing isn’t all that fun…) or in the case of Liam Kaliszewski, waxed his chest for the

World’s Greatest Shave.

The Student Representative Council did a fantastic job at organising such a fun lunchtime event where students and

staff could come and buy a sausage, get their hair sprayed and watch their friends and teachers either lose their locks,

or their dignity when the wax strips were ripped off.

We’d like to say a massive thank you to our beauticians and hairdressers who kindly volunteered their time on the day.

Thank you to Imogen Mumford, Cindy Wilson and Annie from Ann Maurie Salon.

We’d also like to thank the following businesses for their donations:

Morgan’s IGA Gisborne Coles Gisborne

Country Gourmet Meat and Poultry Alliance Pharmacy Woodend

Heather Barker

Finally, thank you to all the staff and students who actually participated. They have put an

incredible effort into fundraising as much money as they can for the Leukemia Foundation to help families suffering

from blood cancer. At the start our team goal was set to $5000 which we have now doubled and raised over $10,000

and counting!!

If anyone is interested in donating then head to

http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/gscshavers

Congratulations to everyone involved. You’ve all done something amazing and every single person who contributed to

the day should be extremely proud.
