CORRIMAL PUBLIC SCHOOL
A small school making a big difference !
THE CORRIMAL CONNECTION
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome to the 2019 school year. A special welcome to all the new students
and families, and welcome back to all of our returning families. The beginning
of the school year is always an exciting time, with students reconnecting with
friends, sharing holiday experiences and looking forward to fresh experiences
in a new grade. Congratulations everyone on a settled start to the year. It has
been a very busy week and our teachers have worked hard to settle all students
into new routines and classes. As I walk through the school and visit classrooms
I feel a positive vibe with children excited to learn. In the coming weeks we
have many things planned including the Stage 3 camp in week 4. What a
wonderful way for our students and teachers to get to know each other. The
relationships that are built during this time are priceless and it certainly helps
to create a positive classroom climate.
I am super excited to be your new Principal and look forward to getting to know
all of the students and families over the coming year. I have already met quite a
few of you in the playground and really appreciate the warm welcome you
have given me. A little bit about myself. I have been with the Education
Department for just on 30 years and have worked across many schools. My last
school was Albion Park Rail Public School and I was the Instructional Leader
working with the teachers. I relieved several times as Principal and was Acting
principal last year until we were able to secure a
permanent Principal. I am passionate about Public
Education and love to be in classrooms with the
students, trying to balance that as a Principal is a
challenge but one I will be determined to achieve
(once I know my way around the school that is, lol.) I
welcome parents and carers in the school as I believe
we all need to work together to provide the best
education for our students and children and we can
only do that together. I enjoy the beach and at one
point I used to be involved in Nippers but it was time
to let that go and hand over to another person. I have
a passion for travel and in the last holidays I spent a
good amount of time in Finland, Norway and Sweden experiencing a beautiful
White Christmas. If you see me out and about in the playground please come
and say hi.

NEW FACE ON STAFF
I would like to welcome Mr David Quinlivan to Corrimal Public School. Mr Quinlivan comes highly recommended and I know he
will have a wonderful time at Corrimal Public School. Look out for a short message of introduction in our next newsletter, in
Week 4. I would also like to welcome back our existing staff who are back for another year at Corrimal Public School.
Throughout the last week of the holidays, I spent many days at CPS and I can tell you that at no stage was I ever alone. Staff
were constantly coming and going, busily preparing for their new classes with great excitement and anticipation. We are so
lucky to have such dedicated staff at Corrimal.
MEET THE TEACHER SESSIONS
Teachers will be holding “Meet the Teacher Sessions” Tuesday 12 February in the afternoon. Notes will be sent home this week
regarding meeting times. I encourage parents to attend this meeting as it will provide a great insight into the coming year for
your child. This year we will hold two sessions, one for K-2 and another for 3-6. In between these sessions we will hold a
sausage sizzle to encourage people to meet each other, especially to welcome our new families to the Corrimal School
Community.
SCHOOL VALUES
The beginning of the school year is always a great time to revisit school values. Teachers will spend time discussing these with our students to ensure that Corrimal Public School is a safe learning environment where the whole school community works respectfully for the benefit of students. Please spend time with your children to discuss the importance of our School Values:
School Values: Respect - Respect everyone and everything Safety - Always be safe Learning - Do your best
SAFE PEOPLE, SAFE PLACES
As we settle back into the school year, it is important to reinforce with children the correct action to take if they are placed in a situation where they feel unsafe. Below are some key messages for children to be aware of in ensuring their safety. I would encourage parents to reinforce the ‘Safe People, Safe Places’ messages with their children, including:
Make sure your parents or another adult you know, knows where you are at all times.
Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of other people.
Know where safe places are – a shop, service station, police station, library or school. If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police.
Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help – police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust.
Don’t talk to people you don’t know and never get into a car with someone you don’t know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you don’t know the person inside, do not stop.
If you are scared and can use a phone, call 000 and tell them you are scared.

SKOOLBAG
Don’t forget to sign up for the Corrimal Public School Skoolbag App. It is the best way to stay in touch with what’s happening at
school. Go to the App store, type in Corrimal Public School and follow the prompts…

SCHOOL CAPTAINS
At the end of 2018, our School Captains for 2019 were announced. These students were democratically elected and will have a huge responsibility in leading the student population of Corrimal Public School. Congratulations to the following students who were elected:
Boy Captain: Flynn W Boy Vice Captain: Connor W
Girl Captain: Keisha B Girl Vice Captain: Kaylee B
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
Each year students elect SRC representatives for their class. These students have an important role, as they represent “the voice” of their class and fellow students, by enhancing their school life through promoting engaging opportunities within the school setting. This year as Kindergarten as Kindergarten will not be starting in their classes until today we will publish the names of the successful candidates in the next newsletter.
WEDNESDAY 27TH FEBRUARY (2:00PM - 3:00PM) WILL MARK OUR OFFICIAL INDUCTION CEREMONY.
SCHOOL DRIVEWAY
As I become familiar with the routines and safety concerns in the school I will put a reminder in the school newsletter. One safety concern that I have just learned about is the use of the school driveway. The driveway is to be used by staff and deliveries only. The Bungalow Bus collects our students in the driveway so we need to keep it clear at all times for the safety of the students. I appreciate your support with helping us to keep all of our students’ safe by refraining from driving or parking within the school carpark.
P&C MEETING
Our next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday, 19th February at 3:15pm. The meeting will be held in Mrs Veljanovski’s and Mrs Strauss’ room. This meeting is an important one to get out P&C year off to a good start.
We hope to see you there.
KINDERGARTEN MAKE A FANTASTIC START
Beginning school is an exciting time. This year we have had 49 new Kindergarten faces in our school. These students have successfully completed their Best Start Assessment and are ready to begin their first days of their school career. We look forward to working with them in the coming years. Congratulations Kindergarten on taking the huge step into “Big School” and welcome to the beginning of an exciting time of fun, friendship and learning at Corrimal Public School.

FROM THE OFFICE
Welcome back everyone, it has been nice to see some of your friendly faces back on board.
We hope you all had a wonderful break.
Just a few reminders as we start the new year, it is very important to have all student information up to date at all times, if you have moved address, changed contact number(s), email address over the holidays, if your child's health condition has changed or your child now has a health/medical condition, please inform the office as soon as possible.
If your child's medication is kept in sick bay and is about to expire or has expired, you will be informed by the office.
And if at any stage your child needs to take short term prescribed medication (eg: antibiotics) during school hours, come in to the office to fill out and sign a form and we will look after the rest.
