SquashWise is not your average sports team. We develop committed scholar-athletes through a long-term program of academic tutoring, college/career preparation, mentoring, squash coaching, and fitness training.

To the SquashWise Family:

Six years ago, SquashWise held tryouts for a group of enthusiastic students who had never heard of squash, but had the desire to try something new. Many of these students had no opportunities to be a part of team or travel outside of Baltimore. Their motivation and effort during tryouts secured them a spot on our team, as well as a place in what would become a second family.

Through the years our family has grown and our students have learned the value of studying hard, training year-round, and competing across the country. They have also learned the importance of having strong character and demonstrating commitment to their teammates. Our students dedicate many years to SquashWise—from the start of middle school, through high school, and then beyond into college and careers.

Today, with you, our extended family, we are celebrating six full years of impactful work in Baltimore City, proving that the combination of academics, athletics, and mentoring will change a child’s life. This year will be a milestone for us with our first cohort graduating this coming spring. Students will move on to college and career placements more prepared, more confident, and knowing that SquashWise will continue to support them. Through years of academic tutoring and enrichment, college visits, and social support, these students are ready to take what they have learned with SquashWise and make their own futures.

It is with your invaluable support that our students are able to access incredible opportunities that will set them on the path to success. We cannot thank you enough for your generosity and commitment to our family. We look forward to continuing to partner with you in our successes for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Welcome Letter

Meet Our Students

“ SquashWise keeps my son well- rounded and grounded.”

– Betty Bell Mother of Nytiece Powell

We could not be prouder of our students! Through their hard work on and off the court, they earn incredible opportunities to travel and compete nationwide.

SquashWise students attend a variety of middle schools and high schools in Baltimore City, including ACCE, KIPP, Waverly, Poly, City, Western, Mervo, ConneXions, and Cristo Rey.

Tayler St. Clair

Tayler was one of our very first students, joining SquashWise in 7th grade. Now a senior at Poly, Tayler is looking at Hood, Fordham, and Penn State. Her record is stellar, earning her scholarships to camps all over the country, including an intensive academic program at Exeter, a college-readiness program at the University of Rochester, and a doubles squash camp in Denver.

Malia Carter

Malia is our winningest squash player! Among many regional victories, she won her divisions at the Midwestern Urban Squash Championships at Kenyon College, the McArthur Junior Silver at the Boar’s Head, and the Lacy Cup in DC. Malia is in 9th grade at the Academy for College and Career Exploration, so she has four more years to develop her squash skills!

Nytiece Powell

Nytiece excels at squash, most recently winning the B-draw of the Urban Individuals Championships at Amherst. This summer, he attended the University of Baltimore’s College Readiness Academy. As he finishes his senior year at Poly, he has his sights set on college at Frostburg, Hood, McDaniel, or the University of Baltimore. Last year, Nytiece was victorious in a celebrity challenge match against author, Wes Moore.

Phillip Freeland

Phillip is impressive, not only at squash, but at football and in school. He is focusing on Engineering as a 10th grader at Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School (Mervo). He is a natural leader, holding a long-time position as SquashWise team captain, and earning a spot on Outward Bound’s Youth Leadership Corps. He recently won the national urban squash essay competition, writing about how grit and determination shape his success in life.

Service to Students, Service to Community

Changing the Game

All young people in Baltimore should have access to caring mentors, a college and career pipeline, and a safe place to exercise and socialize. Unfortunately, the statistics show that this is not always the case in Baltimore City.

SquashWise is unique, thanks to the in-depth and long-term program we provide. Students train, study, and provide community service year-round.

$7,500Nation-wide, the highest-income families spend
