Looking at the calendar, among the reminders
I am getting is that I have been here for just
about a year! Depending on what day you
receive this, it may be a year to the day since I
arrived in Western New York – and of course,
September 1 marks my 1st anniversary as your
Senior Pastor.
I don’t think any of us can say that the year
has gone quite the way we would have wanted. I’m struck
that for roughly half the time I have been here, we are
apart. I’m trying to imagine how I might have planned for
that – or how you might have planned for that – if there
was some way we could have known of Covid and all the
havoc it would wreak on us.
It is good for us to be able to be honest with God
and ourselves about the difficulties and challenges Covid-

World has brought us. In some ways, we have settled into new routines and live in newly familiar pat-
terns; in other ways, it is all still as weird as it was when this first started.
But reflecting back on a year, while Covid changed so many things, including ministry, one thing it did
not change is that ministry will happen in this place. I hope that among the lessons we are learning about
ourselves and our shared ministry in this time is how vital and vibrant it truly is. A year ago, could you
have conceived of our livestreaming worship each week, and finding typically more than 200 unique
viewers have watched the weekly broadcast either live or later in the week?
We may often hear of God planting something new – or in the case of a new ministry, planting some-
one new. Something new was planted here. A new seed has blossomed and grown into something that
even post-Covid I don’t believe any of us could now envision not being part of our ministry. The Holy
Spirit is always working, even in the oddest of times.
One year in, there are some days when I wonder how I’ve gotten through the last 6 months, even
when I know that this could be many more months than 6 to come before we can bring about something
more closely resembling normalcy. It’s a good time to remind ourselves that God always keeps promises
made to us, and a good time to also remind ourselves of the promises we have made to God, ministering
together in this place.
Autumn is nearly here. Cooler temperatures (yay!) and changing leaves are coming. An election is
coming. Blessing of the Pets is coming – October 11! Our first ever all-takeout Pork Dinner is coming.
Football may be coming. School in some form (or multiple forms) is coming. But whatever comes, God’s
Holy Spirit will be with us, and we will be the church. We will get through this together.
With love, blessings, and reminders about distancing & masks,
~ Pastor Jason
Rally Day is coming! This year will be a little
different from Rally Days of the past, but you are
still invited to come for a cookout on the church
lawn after worship on Sunday, September 13
beginning at 12 noon.
This year will be an all-burger event, with Chef Randy Kenyon at the
grill. Individually packaged chips, pop, and water will be provided. You are
absolutely invited to bring a potluck item; please make sure it is in some
form of individual serving containers or bags to keep with our current
health and safety protocols. We do have to continue to avoid "shared"
items where more than 1 person would touch them.
Please RSVP to Joan Barnes by September 6. All are asked to bring their own chairs, to maintain
physical distancing at all times, and to remain masked except when eating. We look forward to having
some fellowship with you to begin the year!

VIRTUAL SUNDAY SCHOOL
Calling all kids and youth! Your Sunday School teachers have missed
your smiling faces and are ready to Zoom with you again. Classes will be
brief (30 minutes or so), with a story focus, activity or game, prayer, and
time to share and support each other. Our hope is to provide a routine
time when kids and youth can think about the stories of God’s people, look
for the presence of God in their own lives, and share God’s love with each
other. This is especially important as we face the struggles and uncertainties of the present day.
Here’s the plan:
10:30 am Pre-School & Kindergarten with Jody Peterson & Mary Anne Meyer
10:00 am Worship on YouTube
12 noon Elementary (grades 1-5) with Cindy Muck, Susan Selvek & John Loughner
1:00 pm Youth (grades 6-12) with Su Grimes and Kim Griffin
We are still working out details for the elementary group, and may meet on alternate weeks; details will
be sent to parents via email. As the school year gets underway and families adjust to their new routines,
we can adapt these plans as needed—just let us know how things are going for you!

September 4—The New Normal Clarinet Octet
CONCERT on the HUCC LAWN
Join us to start your Labor Day Weekend off on a musical note!
Thanks to Lucy Holmes, and *weather-permitting,* The New Normal Clarinet Octet will
be coming to share their musical gifts on our lawn. This event will take place at 6:30pm on
Friday, September 4. All persons are asked to bring their own chairs, to remain masked
while at the event, and to remain physically distanced (but socially close!).
Individually-wrapped desserts which require no "sharing" (such as those Joan Barnes
provided for our ice cream social this summer) will be provided. We look forward to seeing
you!
Thanks to so many of you who have volunteered to help with the Roast Pork take-out dinner on September 26. The only "job" left is cleanup, and I hope two people will let me know they are willing to do this. Some of you have told me you
have large brown paper grocery bags to donate; please get in touch with me so we can discuss how I can get them. In mid-September, I will be sending a separate e-mail message to the brownie bakers and the steam table packers and runners about procedures the day of the dinner. Bob Day will be providing instructions for the men controlling the traffic flow.
Andrea is going to include a full-size poster in this newsletter; perhaps you might like to do what I did -- tape it to the inside of your vehicle's left rear passenger window. Free publicity as you drive around town!
If you are a worker the day of the dinner, and wish to buy dinners for your family or yourself, I suggest you do that at 3:30 that afternoon, and then put your purchased dinners in the refrigerator. This will give the steam table workers a bit of practice as they pack orders.
If I have forgotten anything, I'll try to put it in the Happenings during September. I appreciate all of the good suggestions and advice many of you have shared. Thanks again! Judy Hawk, 486-4668; [email protected]

Sunday Morning Worship and Two Christmas Eve Celebrations
With all of the coronavirus news over the past months, you may have missed some of the changes in
policies around recycling. I know that most (if not all) of our HUCC family works very hard to recycle
household items, as well as reducing their waste. This has become more difficult recently, with so much
single-use plastic entering our lives to avoid the possibility of illness from the virus.
Much of the change in recycling policies is due to China no longer accepting our plastic trash (who
could blame them?). As a result, many markets for recycled plastic no longer exist. Just because there is
a recycling symbol on a container does not mean it can be recycled – it just provides information about
the type of plastic used. Basically, the main plastics with an available market are labeled #1 or #2.
So what can go into your recycling bin?
Paper, magazines, newspaper, clean cardboard (ex., pizza box tops), shredded paper in paper
bags, soft cover books, gable-top cartons
Metal and glass, including metal cookware, metal food & beverage cans, glass containers, aerosol
cans
Plastic bottles, jugs, jars, tubs (reattach caps, lids and spray pumps) – NO Styrofoam, straws, plastic
utensils, drink cups, coffee pods, clamshell containers, prescription bottles, bags
Clean and dry plastic bags (and other plastic wrapping from paper towels, toilet paper, etc.) can go back
to the grocery store and placed in marked bin. They can also go to Ecopark. Do NOT place plastic bags in
recycling bin – they get tangled in the machinery when items are sorted.
Recycling Alkaline batteries has become more of a challenge, due to the closing of the Batteries Plus
store on Jefferson Road. They cannot be taken to Ecopark and are not accepted at stores that DO accept
reusable and lithium batteries (NOT to be put in the trash). We will pass on information about where to
send alkaline batteries when we know more – in the meantime, it is best not to put them in the trash,
because they do contain a number of metals that are better kept out of landfills.
Styrofoam containers cannot be recycled anywhere! Please avoid using them whenever possible.
Encourage restaurants to provide better containers for take-out food, such as paperboard.
We encourage you to check out the Ecopark website – there are many items that can be taken there
that cannot be put in your recycling bin. Go to ecoparkmcny.com or monroecounty.gov/ecopark, You will
find much information on how to dispose of almost everything!
Keep recycling, everyone!

BLESSING of the PETS SUNDAY Save the date!!! October 11
Hi! This is Scarlett, your HUCC Holy Terrier. I know we’re just start-ing September, but I wanted to give all the pets a heads up on some-thing coming in about 6 weeks – please talk to your humans about this now so they will be ready (they are kind of slow sometimes, you know). We’ll be blessed right at home and my human will guide yours through it. Details to appear soon.

It is gifts such as these that prevent us from just getting by but rather gives us the security that HUCC
