Then I help Caylin gather up the fishing nets and the remains of the picnic.
“Come on, pour those back in,” Caylin tells Sara and Johnny when they beg to bring their jars home.
“But I want to keep them!” Johnny wails.
Caylin bends down and looks him in the eye. “Those fish all have a home of their own,” she tells him. “If you put them back then they’ll still be there next time we come here to look at them.”
Johnny solemnly nods his understanding, and he and Sara pour all the jars of sticklebacks carefully back into the canal. I have a feeling those are not Caylin’s words.
I think she heard them many years ago from her grandfather when she was a small girl.
It is nice to see her sharing with other children instead of taking for once.
There is one more thing she has to give though, something even more special than her stories and her memories. Caylin has a talent, and if she would only use it, let people see she is good at running, then I think it would make her happy.
I USED TO THINK CAYLIN TODD DID NOT DESERVE TO BE HAPPY,
BUT NOW I KNOW I WAS WRONG.
